You're going to wreck your scalp and face. If you want something oil-based there are millions of pomades which will do the same thing (as in fuck your shit up but maybe not so much if you don't sweat a lot, or you keep a hankie around like in the old days).
I am with you in that all the water-based stuff is complete shit though. I literally have a drawer full of pomades, pastes, gels, fibers, etc. I've tried that just sweats out completely after a couple of hours at work. I started using this hair wax, but you'll probably have to find a different formula for a slicked-back style because I keep my hair shorter (4-6" up top).

i've been using it for exactly that for years. use VERY little and work it in thoroughly. it doesn't really have "hold" but it does give nice shine and texture.
