like the other anon said, ETA is a movement maker. Many brands either do not have their own movements or choose to use ETA for the sake of convenience/ keeping costs down. (it costs millions to develop your own calibre). Other noted movement providers that sell their movements for other brands to use are Sellita (very similar to ETA and some parts are interchangeable), Seagull, Seiko (many microbrands use the seiko NH35/36)

>>15542911
yea thats a pretty good price. 50 usd sounds about right. Citizen has a lot of SKUs so demand is diluted. Make sure it runs and all that. You might have to change the battery due to the age.

>Following the drop of its Pac-Man edition, Timex is releasing its next T80 in celebration of Pride following Pride Month in June. For the exclusive model, the watch brand has included rainbow accents in its design, reflecting the rainbow Pride flag and symbolizing the movement.
>Pride is the promotion of equality, dignity, self-affirmation and visibility of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex and asexual (LGBTQIA+) people within the global community. The major aim of Pride movements is to remove the social stigma and shame surrounding those who identify as LGBTQIA+. Pride events usually take place on dates which commemorate a key event in that country’s LGBTQIA+ history, as well as during Pride Month.

>No one gave a shit about movement sharing in the past.
We don't live in the past, though. You pay a premium these days and expect them to put in the effort and r&d of producing their own movements, and not a modified ETA. I don't really have a problem with it if they use other high quality movements from respectable brands for their entry models. Like VC using Cartier for example.
It's luxury products so you kind of have to make these ridiculous rationalizations.

"A great movement as manufactured by Zenith, it was the industry’s only self-winding chronograph movement that met Rolex’s high quality standards. Even so, Rolex extensively modified the caliber to its own specification, including:
- A new escapement with a much larger, freely sprung balance and balance spring with Breguet overcoil - a preferred, and more costly configuration for Rolex that leads to higher accuracy.
- A reduction in the balance's oscillation rate from a speedy 36,000 beats per hour to a more relaxed 28,800 beats per houre - requiring less frequent service.
- Elimination of the date function.
Retaining just 50% of the Zenith caliber 400's parts, the final result was the Rolex caliber 4030."

a couple of weeks is tough for shipping

regarding watches, RGM has some around the 3-4k mark but its quite limited. You could get a Hamilton jazzmaster or something....ex american brand. Or an Oris big crown pointer date. Such an effay vintage look with the cathedral hands and pointer date ,but without being too stuffy, big readable numbers for aging boomer eyes and a good manly sized crown. There are many colourways and available in steel/bronze around 2000$

if you want actual vintage like Benrus, Gruen, Elgin etc you would have to do your homework.. cant help you there im not an expert on those. And with vintage there are additional hassles inc servicing

I intentionally said 420 case vostoks as they are the smallest vostoks bar vostok cadet or ladies. I suggested it as a possible recommendation over their komandirskie (which are their field watches) as it has better WR and lume. There is no better choice for a cheap beater mechanical.
There is nothing wrong with that quartz san martin pilot that the other anon suggested. It may not be a traditional field watch but it fulfils field watch criteria (big readable numerals, good lume) while having 200wr as well.

When people say handwind, they exclusively mean manually wound watches. It does not matter that you can shake an auto or whatever.

why do you think some automatics also list "handwinding and hacking?" it is to say they can be wound via the crown and not just a plain automatic.

it's actually a good gauge of the price in so far as you have to remember that consumer prices for singular movements, if you can get them, are not representative of the wholesale bulk price that most of the watchcase+dial manufacturers that we call "watch brands" pay for these things.
some may be just buying an ebauche rather than a fully functional movement
either way, there's no way they're paying such high prices for a movement
the more you buy the cheaper it is
so take that retail price you'd buy a movement for and divide the shit out of it
puts things even more in perspective really

If you are really worried about it use a website like chrono24 that lets you put the money in escrow, find a trusted local guy who can look at it and get the seller to agree that the sale is conditional on the watch checking out, most of the dealer type sellers will be fine with this and at worst you will be out shipping and whatever fee the guy charged to look at the watch for you.

My grandfather gave me this watch the other day. Belonged to my great great grandfather and I am trying to collect as much info on the watch as I can. Not sure where my grandpa's grandpa got it or when, but the calligraphy on the front are his initials. A weave of my great great grandmother's hair takes the place of a chain.

That sounds like a bullshit reason desu, one of the many that get passed around without question these days. The real difference is that 5206 has instant date change, 5216 gradual. The reason might be slight cost cutting or the fact that an instant change mechanism might cause more wear and takes more power to drive. As for the problem with changing the date during the turn-over period, with an instant change the turn-over is, well, instant and the mechanism engages with the date wheel only on that moment, so as far as I know, you need to be really unlucky to fuck it up. I bet the new 5216 pawl is only needed because they changed it to gradual date change.

Vintage Zenith or Omega, used Nomos for a bit more more, maybe Junghans too. Oh and Hamilton.
If you want a pure dress watch that you ONLY use at work or on a date and never on mory sporty occasions because you either already have another one for that or you plan to get a second watch, I would go with a vintage Zenith/Omega, or used Nomos at most if you're into that kind of design.
Don't make the mistake of buying 3 watches that are interchangeable, get watches for different occasions. And for the love of good don't fucking buy HUEG dress watches that hang on your wrist like a pan, the purpose of a dress watch is to be elegant and as understated as possible.

look at the fluted bezels on datejusts and daydates that have been polished till they're just smooth nubs
also dial jobs on vintage watches, the most common and infamous being repainting any given dressier watch's dial black and charging a premium for a relatively rare colour and that shit bubbles and flakes off in time
i've seen this happen to much older rolex dressier models among other brands
i'm not talking about bombay specials here; shit sold in highstreet stores in 1st world cities (that are generally degenerating to 3rd but that's another story)

Yeah. What I don't like about that is that the numerals don't appear to be luminous and that I can't find them here in Yurop without having to import them so having to pay both ridiculous shipping and custom fees.
For me it's not worth it for a quartz watch but if you actually pay 90 bucks for them they appear to be great if you use them for their purpose.

the crystal is sapphire, you can even choose the colour of the tritium (green or blue). 12 index is even in a different colour for marking
and ofc bracelet can be swapped out for leather/nato for even more field watch look

san martin is china..

that carnival watch is extreme value. Full tritium under $100? unheard of in western brands. Sapphire, 200WR? plus, the bracelet is milled it seems. If the movement ever craps out you can just buy another ronda quartz for $2 and replace it. I only remembered this watch because another anon here bought an earlier version while he was in china.

citizen has ecodrive but it is also at ~$175

difference is san martin is honest chinkshit
"swiss" shit masquerades as something that it's not and charges a much higher price accordingly
i mean honestly if you went to buy a seamaster of manonthemoon and it said
>(mostly)CHINA MADE
instead of
>SWISS MADE
would you still pay their asking price?
fucking no, that's why they have to lie

Citizen is at 129 on joma. I'd rather have the ecodrive than random chinkshit with no QC, even if theoretically the value is superior.
I have no problem with chinkshit but I wouldn't buy a watch on Aliexpress, I'd rather buy it from their site or a dealer, like for Seagull.

funny thing is aliexpress has better customer protection than ebay. They will 100% side with you every single time. I have probably bought over 100 misc items off AE.

No, there's not, they're both manufacts of a forever lost time that testimony craftmanship that you can't find today, like someone just said a chinkoid Speedmaster has almost no real value other than the technical one and the marketing one. For old watches genuinely made in a swiss factory by local people it's different, even if the movements were technically worse.

We will never have something like that ever again, at least not in big numbers. Seiko is the only one doing it and most of their stuff too comes from where, Thailand factories?
It's something we lost forever.
