any recommendations for cold weather masculine florals?

>> No.15534593

>>15534556
This is a thread for fragrance enthusiasts who consider fragrances as art form. We discuss here what we find interesting about them. The fragrance on the picture is a widely appreciated niche one that won the most important fragrance award of its release year for a clever construction and lots of interesting nuances. It will probably not get you laid if you can't get laid on your own.
>>15534564
No, it's a synthetic recreation.
>Ambroxan is an ingredient with natural origins. It’s naturally found within ambergris extracts. After the whale ‘releases’ the ambergris, it spends many years floating in the salty sea under the sun. Only then does it harden and develop it’s sweet mineral smell. Now, because we don’t use animal products in perfumery, very clever people have created a synthetic superstar to replicate this scent.
>The crystal powder of Ambroxan is synthetised from ‘Sclareol’, a molecule naturally extracted from the essence of clary sage. Ambroxan is a fascinating molecule that has warm woody, leather and spicy facets. It leaves a lasting sweet, creamy, musky impression and is known as the “modern ambegris” thanks to its animalic and sexy yet very subtle scent.

Because there was a massive collective work put into updating fragrance choices on the previous chart. They got more carefully picked, different budget options were added for each category and the new choices have a stronger masculine bias so it can be more useful to the main demographic of this thread. Previously some categories like florals were dominated by typically feminine scents and now you can find interesting masculine options there instead. The pastebin let alone even is a very good resource for new people coming to this thread and as a reference for all others. All of this data will be put on an infographic sooner or later. Got any other poorly thought out bait than the one about the OP picture or this one?

He’s right, though. There are a million YouTube channels, forums, etc. dedicated to selling coomers pantydroppers. Why come here for that over all those other resources? They’ll all be better than this place, coomers are met with hostility here (and rightfully so). I really love this but I'm not paying 5 dollars an ml for a citrus perfume, even if it is all natural. Can somebody tell me one or two citrus perfumes that smell like you're actually smelling the fruit, along with all of its bitter, sweet, and tart nuances? That's why I like this one so much, there seems to be a lot of depth to the citrus in it.

Also, who else is excited for GentScent's brand? I think he's probably one of the most knowledgeable people in the world on perfume who hasn't actually been trained as a perfumer.

are there any affordable and good fragrances with a significant amount of real oud or sandalwood?

>> No.15535295

>>15535262
Affordable? Nope. Very few fragrances use real oud or sandalwood and that’s for a reason. Shit’s very expensive. Oud can’t really be grown, and sandalwood, as I understand it, is essentially only grown in a few places and a few companies essentially control the entire supply of it.

So no, if you want the real stuff, you’re only gonna find it in high-end niche frags. Anything affordable will be using synthetics.

I found Maria Candida through Exiltat, because I'm a huge fan of violet and I'm always searching for fragrances that smell like classic swedish violet candy (see picture). I have Exultat and Sideris on right now and both are really great, Exultat has a beautiful violet note made sweeter and fuller by the frankincense and with a great woody cedar backing with very very little or no Iso E Super (I hate IES drydowns).
Sideris is a balsamic beauty, smells like a waxy tea with myrrh and benzoin. Very full-bodied. I got most of my balsamic urges satisfied by Eau Sauvage Parfum 2012 and Interlude Man though, so I'm probably not looking at a full bottle of this but who knows.
I'll try Barry Lyndon today too!

>Bold but good choices of Zootopians and Papillon
Thank you! I've tried maybe 5-6 zootopians before but these three have always eluded me, excited to try them.

It’s nothing special anymore because the “Aventus DNA” has been cloned so many times that it doesn’t smell unique anymore. Everyone has a fragrance, or soap, or bath gel or something that smells similar to it. I just couldn’t pay anywhere near MSRP for it at this point when I could get something like Montblonc Explorer that’s close enough for a fraction of the money. Aventus is the original and still the best, but I just think it isn’t so much better to warrant paying so much more.

Luca Turin about fragrance prices:
>[The] price of a dinner for two with a decent bottle of wine in a decent restaurant [is] about the upper limit for me, so let’s say $120 or so for 100 ml of EdP or a half ounce of proper extrait. To my mind everything way above that, e.g. Lutens’ Section d’Or and a swelling host of others, are simply sad jokes perpetrated on sad sacks. And if anybody tells you that the exquisite raw materials upped the price, just laugh.
What are your thots?

Andy Tauer's take:
>In perfumery, the regular model is: a coefficient of 4.5 to 5.5 goes to the distributor. This means: A product that is sold in stores for 135$ US: the distributor pays the producer 135$ divided by 5.0: 27$.
>Now let’s put this into perspective with production costs. (I use European prices here. You can source in China, too. I do so, too, but where feasible I try to source from here, Europe)
>A semiautomatically produced flacon, made in Europe, costs somewhere betweeen 3.5 $ and 6$ , not landed (meaning without transport and taxes), depending on how many you buy and where you buy them. If you happen to have a packaging that is not just a cheap cardboard box: Production costs in Europe are maybe 2-5 $.
>Then you need labels, pumps, caps: Add another 2-3 $.
>All buying prices above: No blingbling, not fancy gold decoration.
>Add whatever amount you want for the perfume.
>Then add work to the equation: Sourcing, scent production, dilution, filtration, bottle filling, crimping (fixing the pumps on the flacon), labelling, putting things into the packaging, cellophaning, and doing the paperwork like dealing with authorities, preparing shipping papers.
>And now you do the math.

He's right >>15538380 maybe you're too young but it was like that forever. People think that buying something will magically get them laid. 10 years ago ISO E super was literally called a pheromone that was supposed to magically make women horny. Look up news around launching Escentric Molecules Then it was Ambroxan and in 10 years it will be a new ingredient. Always the same marketing trick (to be fair it's probably even worse for women's fragrances - most are marketed as seductive etc).
From my experience it's always all about your ENTIRE presence and personality. Fragrance might help a tiny bit but it won't do any heavy lifting if you have confidence and personality of a dead cat or dress like shit and don't take care of yourself. Once you've got this sorted out fragrance might help you out a bit as a conversational starter. In the case of a girl who complimented you on your smell would most likely do it on your choice of shirt or something though. I've been complimented by women many times on fragrances that people looking for 'THE ULTRA PUICY JUICE BLUE BOMB PANTY DROPPER' would call weird or dated.
Most importantly I think it's really fucking pathetic to let your personal choices be dictated by some conformist simping for women's compliments. Be a man and do and wear stuff that you enjoy yourself not others.

It is totally amazing to me how when comparing different formulations of a perfume smelling the real deal can literally change the smell of the bullshit reformulation. In the mail today I received a 10ml decant of the original formulation of Muscs Koublai Khan. Prior to smelling this I thought the new version was a sexy, animalic, musky smell. Right now I've got one on one arm and one on the other. The original really is sexy, animalic, musky, and daring. The new version is just some slightly musky floral bullshit. It's like the veil has been torn from my eyes. When I was waiting on my decant in the mail I was toying with the idea of mixing the two together since the new bottle is a screw off cap (I bought it mostly empty). I have scrapped that idea, it would be a huge mistake to dilute this. The only thing I can compare it to is Salome. It's somewhat like a less feminine, less overbearing, and less dated Salome. I can't wait to wear this in the winter if people can take their masks off by then. I want to force everyone to smell this.

You’re projecting again friend. I got most beautiful compliments from most gorgeous women for wearing my stuff. Trust me, man up and wear what you not others like and you’ll get one too some day. It feels way more amazing and genuine than getting a compliment for wearing a fragrance that you deliberately chosen for fishing for compliments and that doesn’t reflect any of your personality. I can tell you how it feels. On top of the compliment about your smell it’s like they’re complimenting your entire persona that is reflected in your choices. You will probably never know his feel by wearing whatever you’re being told to wear by Internet fragrance personalities. People subconsciously like those who have internal integrity. Jumping on every new Pussy Juice EDP bandwagon is pretty much opposite of integrity, integrity that also lacks from all of your posts given how worked up you got about explaining to a stranger on internet that his compliments are inferior to yours while not knowing anything about him. You’re probably younger than me (I’m 27) so I can recommend you one thing because I wish you good. Try to live your life for yourself not others, women will come naturally as a result. For instance, one of my favorite perfumes, Prin - Mriga is often compared to Siberian Musk. Even the extra expensive highly limited Santal Galore is mediocre. I can list multiple much cheaper chypres (xD) that smell better. What the fuck is a lemon accord from 1920? Lemon oil isn't that expensive, use real lemon oil!

Yeah this time the spergfans over at basenotes are really huffing their own farts over the 6th set. All this "oh I can't wait to see how this evolves over time" bullshit. Bruh, most of it is materials well past their prime, they aren't gonna change much more. "Oh this lavender is unusual and smooth!" Yeah that cause the topnote molecules of the lavender have degraded. Most of these clowns are blinded by the "natural" elements but don't know the first thing about the bloody fundamentals.

I think none of them will ever criticise this mediocre 6th collection. At best you will get "oh it just isn't to my taste, but maybe it will evolve!" They are lavishing reviewers showing even semi-positive reactions with bizarre levels of praise like they are the new messiah.

And even though I disagree with Kafkaesque on some fundamental things, the basenoters have binned them and chalked it up to "oh sometimes I don't think they actually know what they are smelling". Some of these members were on the Forum for years, potentially have had all sorts of perfumes, and still fundamentally do not understand basic chemistry behind it all.

Just imagine the C O P E and the blind adoration of this stuff from the people that bought a full collection preorder.

If I pre-ordered the whole collection I would feel so terrible. I feel like it's going to be a flop. Not a commercial flop, of course, but a critical flop. I do like some artisan stuff, I own 3 Bortnikoffs, a couple Ensar attars, some HoM if they count. What do you disagree with Kafkaesque on?

I know people have recommended this and as I start wearing more perfume I want to find something truly neutral. Yes, Enugma EDP/Parfum is pretty different. The cologne is much lighter and fresher and has a pretty prominent vetiver note that makes smell kind of dry and powdery. The EDP/Parfum is much smoother and richer, much more about the vanilla and jasmine. I’d definitely try it before you make up your mind about the house. The cologne collection honestly isn’t really representative of the house as a whole, they’re more Roja’s attempt to appeal to the designer crowd.

Obviously not for the raw materials, but just for the fact that the smell is so unique and so good. The parfum cologne is a joke for 300 dollars though, even if it is twice the mls. Personally, I think Roja has quite a few really great scents, but you have to venture outside the core line to find them. Enigma is a classic, as far as I’m concerned, but outside of maybe Fetish, I don’t think any of the others from the main line are worth the money. Maybe Elysium Parfum if you’re really into “blue” scents, it is BIS there. Stuff like the Tutti-Fruity line, Midsummer Dream, some of his exclusives, Diaghilev, of course, a couple of the Gulf Collection scents, Amore Mio, probably a few others I’m forgetting. I feel like not a lot of people try those, they just try the core line so they don’t get a great feel for what the house really has to offer.

I actually don’t mind the colognes for what they are. I wound up getting Enigma (at a steep discount, of course) because I wanted a lighter version of Enigma that’s wearable in warmer weather. I think the big issue is that they’re priced around the same as the old EDPs, which were pretty objectively superior. If he’d done what Kilian did and released some fun, mass-appealing, more easygoing scents at a significantly lower price point, I think the cologne line would’ve been a big hit. Like you said, though, they seem to be selling quite well, so I guess he knew what he was doing.
