I gave up on trying to find a nice incense desu, i don't want to spend over $300 on smelly water.

I'm so sad boys, I went to a big store and smelled everything from One Million, La nuit l'homme, sauvage, eros, le male, spicebomb and so on and everything smelled "bad". They all were too synthetic and I can't imagine myself wearing anything like them.

I have Declaration d'un soire which is nice because of the rose/flowery notes and I recently ordered a sample kit from imaginary authors to try out. Any ideas on what else to check out? I've heard some good things about indie houses like olympic orchards and such.

Trying out Bois Vanille. Reviews say it smells like Pink Sugar. If that smells anything like this, I want the GF to have some. GF is mid 20s, intellectual, serious, reserved, and very sweet. She really enjoys the smell of Bois Vanille and already has something with red berries in it... should I just blind buy? I'm concerned with her smelling too young/immature.

>>15506361
One Million is my guilty pleasure. I know everyone hates it, but there's something about it I enjoy. I just hate that immigrants wear it. La Nuit is nice to me, but GF hates it despite it being so safe. The rest you mentioned are straight up bad, with the exception of Sauvage, which clearly stirs something in low value women.

While I prefer IA over OO, OO is definitely worth checking out. "Woodcut" was kind of simple and straightforward but enjoyable none the less - a very accurate depiction of freshly cut (pine?) wood, positively leaking sap. You may enjoy slumberhouse, but no guarantees.

I don't know what you're looking for in a store. TF might bring you some enjoyment, but other than that, you'll only find mainstream fragrances for teenagers and similarly uncultured people.

Yeah thats the thing, if mainstream frags aren't my thing I have to check indie brands but its hard to find good ones with good presentation. IA was an exception, any advice? I've heard of houses like Alkemi I think

far from "holy grail", they're just very popular and mass-appealing so they get recommended a lot. since you liked declaration d'un soir, have you tried other airy floral fragrances while you were sampling out there?

ysl l'homme + its flankers might be up your alley, especially l'homme ultime since it's a soft rose. neroli frags like neroli portofino or bright neroli could also be worth trying.
>>15506257
former, although its been a while since i last sniffed both. have you tried pure havane? its a sweeter tobacco reserve. insurrection wild 2 is a very cheap but decent clone of pure havane

>> No.15506528

Hm, no, Cape Heartache has a slightly green pine quality and has that sweet strawberry. Woodcut is a straightforward woodsy fragrance, would work on any man. It's wonderful, but not edgy. Cape Heartache is not going to fit on everyone. The woods are slightly similar, but they're distinct.

Byredo might tickle you, but I honestly have no idea, I haven't sampled them.

They're pretty affordable and interesting and a good way to explain notes and conceptual fragrances to a friend. They're easy to ask for as gifts/use a GC for because you can just get them from Sephora now. Tea Room and By the Fireplace are gorgeous. Sailing and Beach scents are summery and light, I probably wouldn't by them individually though. The Barbershop and Lipstick ones are terrible. Jazz Club is really well composed and striking, but sometimes too boozy on skin. I don't care for any of the florals (but I don't really like many florals) and I wish Lazy Sunday Morning as much was as good as the concept. Haven't tried the lemon or coffee shop ones

Maybe because 80% of the western world and 100% of the media already agree with what they believe, they don't feel a need to visit a somewhat fringe website to talk about it. Le Labo discovery sets are pretty inexpensive and you can personalize the packaging if you go to a Le Labo shop.

The Kilian deluxe sample sets that come with a travel atomizer are pretty luxurious feeling for a more special gift, if you can get your hands on one (attached a pic of what I mean, because I'm having a hard time finding this online). Kilian packaging also feels luxurious and expensive instead of niche, so maybe it'd be easier to share your hobby that way.

Frederic Malle coffrets are a nice gift too, if you know she likes a specific note (e.g. rose).

DS & Durga has a greatest hits sampler from Net-a-Porter. Once NAP has gift-wrapping again, it could feel like a thoughtful special occasion gift. NAP has a lot of sample sets actually, could be worth checking out?

Penhaligon has a cute, well-packaged set of miniatures that isn't too expensive. Their discovery library is also a good deal.

She might also like Diptyque and Byredo but they're not as interesting. However, they're more popular among girls, so it's possible that she will talk about them more with friends who are into beauty, etc.

Depends what you want. You can't go wrong with Tom Ford's Italian Cypress in the summer.

Or maybe a more citrusy scent like Xerjoff's "Nio". So good, both are excellent in the warmth.

If you are a little adventurous then you should check out "Petit Matin" by Maison Francis Kurkdijan. It has a wonderful light "summer morning" feel. It might lean slightly feminine due to the orange blossom. But you will just smell elegant.

Anyone else have a damn hard time really telling the difference between the opening and the drydown with most perfumes? People on Fragrantica, etc always say shit like "Oh yes, this perfume is absolutely totally different in the dry down" but I'm smelling it and depending on the perfume it's just not as powerful and probably less citrusy. 80% of the time the tards from fragrantica are making shit up. Most fragrances are rather linear. Very rarely you will see something like kouros that changes completely within 2 hours.
The most common kind of “evolution” on scents is citric/fresh notes dying off and the stronger, spicy or woody ones taking prominence. Vetiver also tends to get more intense after a while.
>>15511339
Most of the people in fragrantica literally believe that the fragrances are made out of the notes listed. Hell no. At best it is useful to check similarities and longevity. Don't worry. It's just as you're saying. 90% of perfumes don't have discernible phases. It's a big cloud where you smell everything at once and some parts of it become more tamed with time. Virtually in none cases you'll be able to smell only top notes for first 10 minutes then only mid notes for 2h and then the drydown. Youtubers and reviewers are making shit up, too. Also funny that you’re playing the >muh poorfags card, considering that I guarantee my collection is worth significantly, maybe even exponentially more than yours. Money isn’t the issue, quality is. Yes they do. You're an idiot.

Most modern furniture is very expensive and very low quality. My picture is a side table that costs 400 dollars. I have a couple because I go to salvage auctions. They are made of recycled pallet wood, look cheap, feel cheap, weigh only about 15 pounds, hollow, made in China. Who is buying these 400 dollar tables? People with money. Then what is “high quality” to you? To me it is using high quality ingredients in its composition (although it is more complicated than that in likes of ELDO and xerjoff), but if you want to just say “it smells cheap” you can very well say that some shit like Lalique white or eau de rochas are high quality despite them being made with the cheapest shit possible.
If it is all subjective we may just as well throw the “quality” label away, since, for example, I think Creed Milesime Imperial is a synthetic sweaty garbage that rehashes the same crappy designer aromachemicals and I would not pay $20 for it, but there is some other anon that loves and claims it is his favorite.
>>15513670

Have you ever actually compared it to the fragrances it cloned? Claiming that it is q clone or EROS of all things makes me think that whoever claimed that never smelled Layton at all because they have nothing in common aside from being sweet and mass appealing.
It is clearly inspired/a clone of boss bottled, but if you smell them side by side you can tell that Layton is deeper, more balsamic and acidic. It is different to the point that I think that boss bottled is trash and Layton is good, but then we go back to the subjectivity affair once again.

How can something generic and unoriginal be considered high quality? What’s the point? Why spend good money on something that smells like what everyone else is wearing? need to find some samples for the Dior homme line in Europe, like all the versions in order to make a decision. Somehow Dior doesn't fucking sell samples anywhere

well I could visit the store but I doubt they would just give me a bunch of samples; just looks like you don't wanna buy shit.

???????????? curb your social anxiety and ask for samples. just dont look/sound like you're gonna flip the samples for money and you'll get them if they have them. if they're not giving away samples then ask if you can just sample in store

I don't look like shit dude, just that even local high end warehouses have a policy to just give one on designer fragrances like Dior. Has nothing to do with social anxiety I just don't feel like visiting the same store six times in order to get all the samples, I'd rather get them in one go online and be done with it.

thanks, any rec's for something tobacco-y? The girl i mentioned in my first post has a birthday soon and she mentioned she liked something tobacco by Tom Ford, so was going to get that as a gift, but if you know something better maybe i can get her a tester

just sample them in store and buy decants of those you liked then? again, facebook frag groups work well for getting decants. ebay as well but i've had better deals on fb.

if you do try and get a single sample from the store, intense is very tasty

Fahrenheit is pretty based and leaves an impression. If you’re happy with it there is no need to dive deep into this addictive cess pit of a consoomer hobby.
