I have a couple of questions about movements.

The first one is In house vs ETA. I'm thinking about purchasing an entry lurury watch probably next year and I was wondering the long term question, what's easier to repair?,eta or in house?, my idea is basically wearing the watch for many many many years, no one watch collection, but close, so it will be serviced many times. How do you think will be the situation with the availability of ETA parts in 10-20 years?,easy to get/repair or the swatch group will jew their movements?. Would be more efficient getting an in house movement watch and repair it when the times comes?, and, how does that works?, if you don't live near an AD/repair center, you must send the watch by mail or something?

geokota because the dial has more depth. Applied indices, texture (med. sunburst +concentric rings) and details make it look more expensive than it is. The orange hands add a zingy touch without going overboard. The spinnaker has manufacturing shortcut disguised as minimalism written all over it. Money is not really a problem, not rich, but what is saving 100-150eur per year supposing a 6 year interval of repairing?. My doubt is mainly the hassle of the process, which I guess it's not a big deal having to go through it every X years but it's something I also must consider. And the final and biggest fear, imagining I have an ETA watch and in 25-30 years I'm not able to find someone with the pieces or tech to repair it, that's probably what it's leading me to buy a watch from a big brand like omega since I know they will be there at that time, I know it's pretty weird thinking about future, but I like thinking everything as much as possible.

extremely unlikely/never going to happen considering the sheer number of brands and their mother using ETA/Sellita. There will always be spare parts and movements floating around for a long time

in constrast many dead vintage swiss brands with inhouse movement are basically unservicable, big hassle or extremely costly to do now. A major brand like Omega is (probably) safe, but many big brands of their time have died in the past as well.

In the watch world even something like 2,000 units can be seen as a lot depending on the brand and model.

I guess you can purchase all of them, keep them in mint and unopened condition. You might break even many years from now if there’s a Street Fighter resurgence for some reason.

Ok bros, recovering fatass here, Down from 290 to 230 here. Still have big boi wrists but not quite as meaty as before I bough a SPB143 on a whim to wear as a beater at work. Holy shit what is wrong with Seiko? How the fuck did they make a 20mm bracelet wear like a 24mm bracelet? It completely ruins the whole watch. The SPB051 is enormous I tried on once was a big watch but some how wore better than this?

Why is Rolex the only brand that understands that a tapered bracelet just wears so much better and more correct?

Bracelets are Seiko's weakest component. They can't even make good ones for Grand Seiko. It's like they don't care about them at all. Rolex on the other hand have spent decades trying to perfect them and it shows. But even they can't compare to the bracelets on the Royal Oak or Nautilus. Possibly the best ever made.

I think it's one of the best affordable divers that isn't Chinese, it also looks very good. If you want something more quirky/less serious, you can always buy an Amphibia, but ditch the original bracelet and get a silicone strap though. If you want a good bracelet opt for the somewhat more expensive Neptune. Vostoks hold insane value (75$ for an Amphibia with shipping and an additional strap) for 200m+ WR, are tough as nails, they come in hundreds of dial variations and have incredible technology and horological history behind them. Only problem is the month+ shipping time due to COVID.

Here is my 2 cents on it, owned it for less than 12 hours now, first time watch owner (apart from cheap casios and such).
After reading the poorfag guide, lurking in a handful of threads, and some research I ended up with the Kamasu. It has this classic dive watch look which I think is quite elegant, sapphire crystal, and is very affordable.
Since it is my first and only watch in my collection, one of the reasons I picked it was because I could see myself wearing this everyday in more casual outfits and more dressed up ones as well.

The "fresh look" you're looking for is 9.9/10 fugly retarded mess.
That's why the classics work. You don't won't some bullshit on your wrist. If you want to experiment on a budget with "fresh looks" then there's swatch quartz chinese made shitters and honest china made chinese quartz/mech shitters that litter taobao and everywhere else.

If you're interested in Mido consider the "Commander".
It's the only mido watch with any personality and one that's not a dime a dozen pattern that's available from virtually every other maker ever. Been made continuously since the 70's so there's many different variants and colors available. Vintage, pre-swatch mido is also around.

It's got a classic vibe but it's not classical, like the baroncelli, if that makes sense. It's a mid 70s look that other watches available today do not have. No one you know will see it as old timey because they'll have never seen it before let alone be able to recognize the design cues.
If you're going for a sleezecore/hawaiian shirt deal then the gold variant is the one for your sleezy ass.

Problem with "pure" dress watches is the emphasis is on the materials and the craftmanship that contemporary RRP $800 watches can't really pull off: in my experience they almost always feel a little cheap. The Baroncelli is nice and it could make a good first watch but not for $800, they were selling out the COSC chronometers for $395 on Jomashop a few weeks ago.

As with most luxury products the stated RRP prices are unrealistic for most brands, any ad will give you a 20% discount on brand new models without a question if you walk into a brand's own fancy boutique.
The ones found on Jomashop are in many cases discontinued/less sought after models sold in bulk by a retailer or last remaining pieces of a collection. They don't and they shouldn't sell you ex-display or in any way used watches, luckily I've never heard about such issues with Jomashop and they offer a 30 days period to send it back if there's any issue.
In some cases they come with a manufacturer's guarantee, in other cases the guarantee comes from Jomashop, you can check that under the "additional info" title.

Sometimes the manufacturer will buy their own watches back from the AD if they dont sell (to preserve scarcity of supply). Sometimes they dont, or cant.
how many people even know of armand nicolet, not even most watch people know. DESU its a half dead heritage brand which allows for such good deals for the consumer to be had

>The usual authorized retail store works like this: the brand manufactures its watches and sells to official distributors across the globe. The distributor sells the watches to authorized retailers, who sell the watches to retail clients. Although grey market watch dealers are not a part of the authorized dealer chain, they still manage to get ahold of and sell luxury watches.
>When a brand or retailer has excess inventory, they may reach out to grey market dealers with offers to purchase that inventory in bulk at deeply discounted prices.
>With sales falling at authorized dealers, more unsold timepieces are finding their way from the Swiss-dominated watch industry’s controlled official retail networks to grey market watch dealers, where they are often sold at significant discounts.
>Swiss watchmakers say they hate the grey market because high discounts damage the meticulously crafted aura of prestige and make it harder to sell their goods at the full price. However, these brands may also have sold to grey market watch dealers when their product wasn’t selling.

>Made in only one remote location in the world, Harris Tweed is the only fabric protected by its own act of Parliament, The Harris Tweed Act 1993 . Manufactured using the finest Scottish Cheviot wool, it is one of the most remarkable textiles in existence. Harris tweed is a world famous fabric that exudes elegance. It is often said Harris Tweed needs to be inspected with a magnifying loupe to really get its greatness. When you hold a magnifying glass to the tweed, you can see the many, many colors that can go into just one piece of yarn.

>With its unique speckled texture, Harris Tweed is one of the most stylish fabrics on earth. It is used to create far more garments than watch bands, and a well-made designer Harris Tweed jacket can run you some tens of thousands of dollars. Harris Tweed has even been worn by stars and royalty, and was popularized in high society by King Edward VII in the 1800s.

the cheap $2 ones on AE range from decent+passable to 'meh, this sucks'. Look for the ones with solid rounded keepers and not the flimsy rectangular ones. pic related
if you want fancy shiny nato, search up 'seat belt nato'. $10 ish.

you can also look into elastic 'paratrooper straps' (aka marine nationale straps), perlon straps (very effemine-effay), seal straps, single pass natos. But for these AE dont have a big selection, you can look at cheapestnatostraps or something, they have a good price for non AE (ships out of sweden)

In that case:

A nice automaic dress watch, doesn't have to be expensive. Maybe a Seiko Presage?

For a weekend watch, I'd recommend a Citizen Promaster (they have great Aviation and Chronograph styled watches).

And for last but certainly not least, a nice Breitling / Rado as your luxury shitter.

IMO every newfag's watch collection starter kit should include the following:

- Dress watch for suits and other formal attire. That Nomos should work decently here.
- Beater for when doing jobs in the garage, yard or any other work that gets your hands dirty. Any cheap G-shock will do.
- Sports watch for the weekends/casual outing. If you're traveling it'll fulfill most of the other watch roles.
- That one watch you really like. This one's not really a classification nor does it serve a practical need, but watch collecting is always about owning pieces that you're attracted to for what ever reason.

what is the lug to lug ?
the thickness and bezel also can make a watch look smaller or bigger

there is the normal 29er that is only 36mm+, but it does not come in navy

>> No.15503992

>>15503962
depends on the lug to lug size and your wrist shape.Measure your wrist width, then the maximum lug to lug you can wear its a bit lower than that, for example, with a 55mm wide wrist, only up to 48mm lug to lug watches, a bit more if the lugs are curved and if the type of watch allows it, not the same wearing a bit oversized diver watch or a pilot watch than a more casual/classy watch.Oversized chronos can look bad even if they are considered tool watches unless they are the type of omega seamaster chrono, something really tool looking by design.

But my opinion, with 16cm wrists, if your wrists are not flat, I would wear only up to 39mm, ideally 36mm-38mm,40mm only for tool watches with curved lugs.

measuring tape/string+ruler, wrap around the thinnest part of your wrist, aka the place where watches should be worn (not the joint)

unless you are wearing some fancy expensive perpetual calendar watch, it will just display 30, 31. The watch does not know what month or leap year it is. You will have to manually adjust.

here's a pic from the side, so the lugs aren't really rounded but clearly go down quite a bit i think. do you think its thinness plays a role as well? i also heard that darker dials seem smaller, it's like every aspect of this watch tries to be appear smaller but is a whopping 42.4mm which could be simply too large for me.

yes darker dials look smaller, just like darker clothes are "slimming"

i have made a scale of the diametre divided into 4 equal sections, duplicated it over the lug, you should be able to roughly estimate the lug to lug size.

desu i think it will barely fit and not be that bad.

it seems like the lug to lug is around 48mm, so the rest depends on your wrist shape, but I think it will wear really big for that kind of watch.

Maybe he says that because Nomos watches have a really weird lugs, not something everybody likes, and most of the times their lugs are oversized so you must be careful with the watch size, you can buy a 40mm watch and will find it has insane lugs and that you should have bought a 36-37mm watch instead.
