Who's the best in the mid-lower end of the Swatch group ladder? Tissot and Certina seem to have a Hyundai and Kia thing going on, but Tissot seems to be stuck with putting out all the bland crap no one else in Swatch group wants to do, with some exceptions like the Visodate, Le Locle, etc. Hamilton's got a decent lineup, and seem to be getting a different version of the P80 movements compared to Tissot and Certina, though I wish they still had an option for the bog-standard ETA calibers outside of stuff like the Jazzmaster Thinline and the Intramatic. Don't know enough about Mido, Rado and Longines to really have an opinion about them.

hi /wt/
thought i should ask at the start of a thread for best results
my late grandfather left me a watch, and I finally had the case opened (it was too tight)
what I had thought was an automatic is actually a manual, but the winding does not work anymore (crown just spins freely)
brought it to one local watchmaker, he took a look at it and said he cant do it/its too old/no spare parts anymore

upon research it is a late 1960s/early 70s RONDA manual wind, although this has 23 jewels and not the 21 on the website
http://ranfft.de/cgi-bin/bidfun-db.cgi?11&ranfft&176&2uswk&Ronda_1035_21
where do I even get spare parts for these? do I just go from watchmaker to watchmaker?

Post your vintage shitters but very valuable in terms of history.

Pic related was my grampa watch, I don't know when or how he got it, asked a long ago here and people said it was a late 50's-early60's watch, so It was probably one of the earliest watches from my grampa, I already have several shitters from him, he was a a based Orientpilled person so I have some orient 3 stars sitters too, but this one is wildly different from the rest, older and nicer, the motherfucker has a 38h power reserve and it runs pretty good considering its age and that it havent been serviced, I should service it at least to oil it , don't know what movement has, probably some low tier mass produced swiss movement.I also love the fact the watch size is 39mm and still has a short lug to lug distance, 44mm, a modern 39mm watch would never go under 48mm at that size.

I don't know a lot about the others, but Longines has my respect, they are probably the only ones who are making different and nice looking watches, maybe a bit oversized, but they at least make good and different watches.Tissot, as I said on a previous thread, can make good watches but have a ton of quartz shitters and low tier mechanical watches, which is not that bad, what I like about them is they also make pocket watches, I'm considering buying a silver pocket watch to larp a bit, I like clocks and buying a new one seems better than trying to find something on the vintage market and not ending with a franken or something that needs a costly service.

>My main problem with the SLA037 is time accuracy, it has been running at +13s/day which is pretty bad. In comparison, the 149 is running between +5 and +13s/day. I recently purchased a Yema Heritage 63 and the Sellita SW 200 is running at -2s/day... So, from that standpoint, the Seikos are disappointing.

i’ve also read about the 2020 SLA’s and their accuracy. the 8L is known to take a few months to settle in (mine took about 5 months) but 13+ seconds a day for a high beat is very odd, even brand new.

out of the assembly line that should be way more accurate. if i had an 037 i would def be bothered by it. if they are still complaining a few months from now they better return it. it wouldn’t be acceptable imvho.

Yes, is what I really like about the watch, never seen a design like that, a clean and nice looking art deco geometry, every element its on its place, the seconds subdial has a different pattern/texture and it even has a minimalistic sector design. I have seen similar patterns from watches from that time, but they are never as nice looking as this one. i would pay a lot for a modern reissue or even a modern watch with similar dial, all these new art deco watches look kinda bland, usually some big circle on the dial and that's all.

I only like this watch when I don't stare at it. The longer I look at it the less I enjoy it.

It has a retro 50s Cowboy Americana vibe that ends up putting me off. Like the styling is very reminiscent of something you'd see in a diner back in the day. I don't know if anyone else sees what I'm trying to (and doing a poor job of) articulate.

Buy watches you like, you don't need any reason to collect watches, if you think getting a glashutte watch will be a good start go for it. From that brand I like the SAR rescue. But I will give you my opinion about collections, try to buy things you really like, not things other people like, so try to not purchase watches based on reviews or your collection will be filled by nice and souless watches, don't be that guy who buys every ''must have'' watch, so based on that, your first election is nice to me,not a common watch, but still nice.

Ok, there's an easy way to tell if the mainspring is broken. Take the back off and wind it while looking at the back. The wheel on top of the barrel (called the ratchet wheel) should turn. If it turns easily and you feel no resistance, then either the spring is snapped or has fallen off the arbor inside the barrel. If you don't get that far (wheel doesn't spin) then something is wrong with the keyless works

This is one of the best watches you can get, simple, accurate, all the features you need with no frivolities.
I used this watch to navigate when my GPS died in the north atlantic because I always have the DT set to GMT, it is insanely accurate and loses almost no time, and has a calendar

glashütte has many fine brands but most people will only know Lange and Nomos, its a ecosystem thats relatively unknown to most even in the watch world
I've never really looked at them beyond nomos, just not 'my kind of watch' but yea sure. Like that other anon said these are uncommon but quality picks, better than most would have for their 1st pick.
the thing is before getting your 1st few watches, its hard to know what you really like. In the mind and in imagination is different from wearing it. Your tastes in genre/bracket/style might shift, or you end up falling in love with something else after reading about it/seeing it

I'd consider taking the vintage route because pre-unification German watches are still undervalued and it's relatively easy for new collectors to build a quality collection that should appreciate with time. There are two Glashütte-connected werks particularly worth to look out for.
One would be the Kurtz 25 or 251, a chronometer-grade precision wrist watch movement made by UROFA/UFAG/TUTIMA's watchmakers who led by their director Dr. Ernst Kurtz fled to the Western occupation zone at the end of the war, taking some machinery and the blue prints with them.
The other is the GuB/Lange VEB 28.1 what is essentially a miniaturized version of the B-Uhr Lange werk developed during the war and made in the East by Lange's former craftsmen. A very fine specimen of both should cost you at around 700-1500 euros, not terribly expensive given their rarity and the fact that they are the truest and highest quality Glashütte wrist watches one can have from before the 1990's (pre-1945 Lange would use Swiss movements in its wrist watches).
There's this great and well documented site about everything vintage Glashütte-related if you'd wish to learn more: https://www.glashuetteuhren.de

Common in the sense of branding, for example, everybody knows seiko,casio,omega,rolex,orient,citizen,longines...Mühle Glashutte?,not common for many people even for new watch enthusiasts. Common brands are the big houses, brands from the swatch house like Tissot,longines,omega,swatch...the japanese brands seiko,citizen,orient...then there is a lot of small brands and microbrands, many people doesn't know about it unless they are looking for something different, that's why I said you should buy watches you like, collecting is looking for something, search microbrands, search big brands, look for shitters at second hand markets...so in the end you will have an unique collection, there are collections out there that are pretty sad, basically looks like someone with money bought only the popular watches. Just remember, a nice watch does not mean it is expensive or popular, as long as you like it and it tells the time, is a nice watch.

It looks to be in a good condition visually and the usual suspects such as winding stems/mainsprings/balance staffs should be readily available nos and, most serious watchmakers also keep a stock of old movements for parts. It's more likely that the watchmaker you took it to is simply unwilling to work on lower monetary value vintage pieces where there's relatively lot of potential hassle and the work/value ratio doesn't pay off. It's getting hard to find a competent watchmaker willing to work on vintage pieces lately, most have a 50-40% rejection rate where they'll politely decline to work on pieces they find potentially time consuming or uninteresting. I'd try and find a good watchmaker in my area, if there's none then I've heard good things about Christian Dannemann (watchguy) in the UK and Laszlo Hantos (hantosora) in Hungary who take commissions from abroad, but it probably won't be cheap even if they accept to work on it out of kindness (make the wm know that it's a family heirloom and you're aware that repairing it is not economical and will cost more than what the watch is worth, but you still want it).

Ok so that's basically the case fitting ring screw. If there was a ring in there / spacer to space the movement it would secure it.

Don't need to put it in. Did you say it was in the crown area ?

Either way put a screw driver in the screw holding the ratchet wheel in and turn to TIGHTEN the screw. That will manually wind the barrel and you can see if it ticks.

You can buy a new Rolex Oyster Perpetual in 36 or 39 mm for around that price.
If you have small wrists, the 36 mm version will look great on you, and since the dial was designed for 36 mm, the indexes won't look stretched out.
Never worry about the bracelet when buying a watch, since it's the easiest thing to change. If you don't feel confident, ask a jeweler or a watchmaker to change it for you.
Rolexes are probably the best watches at keeping value, but remember to keep all the original parts and documentation, because they will be necessary as proof of its originality.

We never were a country that is industry and export oriented such as Germany, our economy thrived on other ventures like marine trade. Obviously that was the wrong move financially in the long term, but overall things might have gone worse if we had gone a more industrial route. We played and we lost, shit happens. But we are rebuilding decently.

Overall, money and wealth are not very important to us as long as we're content. Greeks value their personal happiness more in conjunction with friends, family, going out and having a good time, in contrast to the boring, semi autistic North Europeans who value money above all else.

Every country has their ups and downs, if our only downside is that we aren't as rich as Northern Europe (and mind you we are still pretty rich as far as Europeans go), then I'll gladly pay that price.

Quick question, when I was in Rhodes every second Greek complained about Albanians but no one could point them out to me. Is this a strawman or are there actually a significant amount of Albanian workers in the islands?

I like Omega and I buy watches for me because I like them. I don't care what normies or /wt/ turbo-autists say

Any reason to not get a Hamilton pilot day date if I'm shopping aviator style watches under $1,000? Tried hard to find alternatives I like as much because of "muh Interstellar," but I really do love the throwback and modern mix style they went with on that watch.

>> No.15501338

>>15501333
Daydate pilots are kinda hard to find, but also look at Tisell, San Martin, Laco and Stowa.

Hamilton is a very good choice though. Only downside is their water resistance.

>they've made a ridiculous amount of limited editions (limited to a thousand? Thats not fucking limited) but they also make some really solid sports watches in some more out-there colourways and variations.

The other day I was browsing Omegas webpage and they had around 40 different speedies, some of them looked similar, but I guess they had somme differences I didn't see.

>>15501188
Omega is ok, but they make too much editions, limited or not, specially speedy editions, they make a lot of them, which increases the meme status of the watch.

Not stuck on the day date feature, but it has grown on me. I like Laco and Stowa for flieger styles, haven't seen much on the more modern end that gets my juices flowing though. San Martin seems like decent value for micro brand grade NH35 watches, but have my fill of NH35 micros and am really looking to get into a brand with a little more history and recognition. Need to look at Tisell I guess, don't have any experience with them.

yes, clear epoxy/glass filler which then can be sanded down and polished

No it's not. Do you have enough money not to have to worry about having to kill yourself when it runs out? Yes. Do you have enough money to afford relatively decent food? Yes. Can you afford luxury shit like computers and cars and cell phones? Yes. So you have more than enough to live very comfortably and if you complain about anything you're a fucking spoiled brat and should be beaten daily.
