Yep, I agree.
Also I'm not a fan of any writing on the dial with the exception of the manufacturer and maybe the series of the watch. You can always put this "automatic mechanic 200 meters whatever feet this and that movement certified" bullshit on the back or nowhere.

For vintage chronos.. anything with an actually attractive dial and quality movement is going to be over 1k. I had a Seiko RAF before which was great but I'm just not too into the chronograph complication. Not worth the extra expense and fragility for me, I prefer more rugged watches.

Thanks. It was a bit over $700 with shipping, shot in the dark "best offer" on ebay and the watch turned out better than advertised for once. A lot of vintage Tudors haven't taken off in price yet, they're good value right now although 50s watches in good condition are tough to find.

I once saw on reddit a watch collection that only had the typical watches on YT reviews, rolex sub, speedy, datejust, explorer, navitimer...When I look at collections Im not looking something to judge the owner taste or his wealth, I want to see actual collections, something collected by someone with their own taste, for example, I remember that pic, and praised the bulova, it looks really really nice and its something you don't seem there is also that star wars citizen, that weird orient between the victorinox and the alpinist and the orient with calendar, that and gaudy shitters one of them even with a stormtrooper, ok, that's a nice collection, shit you dont expect and take the time to look at.

I remember some anon, had a huge collection with plenty of nice and unusual watches, even that swatch watch with the spooky ghosts and a plastic shitter that was activated by water, it was a meme watch, but was fun.

I timed a recent thunderstorm with my telemeter and could clearly tell that it's coming closer, from 7 to 3 km. But i could have told that by the sound alone. Also drove an exact speed for 1km and used the tach to figure how fast i am, it was pretty precise. Will test with the gps and see if its precise like the gps. And how much the car tach deviates from reality.

I other words, total gimmick.
You can calculate neat stuff with the slide rule, can use the scala to calculate fractions too, with a bit of mental gymnastic. But i don't know who uses these in reality.

Not sure what those links are trying to prove. The first was a badly broken watch that would cost more to repair than the value of the watch. Seems sensible to reject the repair unless the customer wants it done because it has sentimental value. As for the second its standard Rolex policy to replace parts with modern versions. Hardly news. They do it because most customers simply want a working nice looking watch returned to them. The whole concept of keeping watches with all original parts and condition is actually a fairly recent thing. Rolex also do it to reduce the number of old parts available that can be later used to build fakes and frankenwatches.

I went to Omega with mine and they said they could send it to Switzerland to be serviced for $400 and it would take like 6 months. They said they have a catalog of all their watches from like the past 100 years. I ended up getting it serviced at a 3rd party store that's licensed to operate on Omegas and it only took a few days and $300 but they didn't replace the crystal.

Sure certain brands are better than others. Patek for example will service any of their watches no matter how old or how complicated. If they don't have a 100 year old part in stock they will remake it from scratch.

Why wouldn't you just go to an independent guy from the beginning? Any competent watchmaker can service and repair almost any vintage watch, including sourcing parts or making them from scratch, and they'll do it exactly to the extent YOU want. They're not gonna be any more expensive either, and will do it faster unless they have a really long waiting line (which on the other hand implies they are good). I guess it might be hard to find a competent one in some places, but it's still worth the trouble.

Well for one I live in a country where there's maybe 2-3 "high end" watchmakers, and people have been complaining about every single one of those, so I'd have to send the watch back to the manufacturer anyway because there's no way I'm dealing with corrupt retards who only work on shit for the rich politicians and mafia and they'll fuck everyone else's shit up.

It on my wrist now, bros! Sadly my phone camera is shit and can't capture how shinny and good it looks. I was afraid the grille will make the watch look huge, but it's actually pretty proportional. My own local horologist, who has no affiliation with Rolex, has told me that Rolex has a guarantee to keep all parts of a watch for 20 years (minimum) from the moment of discontinuation.

So if the watch you're looking to have service on was discontinued within the last 20 years, Rolex is guaranteed to have parts for it. It's not guaranteed after that, however, that doesn't mean that it won't have those parts. Just after 20 years from discontinuation they stop making them and once that stock is used up, they move on to replacing the vintage parts with new ones.

I went to the Omega boutique a few days ago and the woman who was showing me all of the watches would often give me a price range of the things I was looking at -- most of them were seamasters of some kind (though some were speed masters). Everything was under $10k, some were even $5k.

Yet on Omega's website I'm hard pressed to find a watch that is below $12k.

Is there some special sale going on in the boutiques that I'm unaware of? Or is the website just wrong?

I mean the main difference between Seiko's lower mid range stuff and it's mid range stuff was a 4r35/36 vs 6r15
Since I've owned about 4 watches with a 6r and half of which ran like shit while all of the 4r ones ran well within reasonable specs, I'm not actually fussed about them making the newe 6r35 a more expensive movement; the 6r15 had all sorts of bullshit problems even if it had a higher level of finishing.

I don't agree that the newer stuff is overpriced but I'm saddened by the lack of 100 dollar mechanical in it's newer selectio which the SNK809 filled. If you can get one of those rn, they made a million and theres still stock but I believe it's the end of the 7s26 movement.

It's all in the design of the watch, ideally a dress watch should have straight lugs with a small crown (no guards), a relatively small case diameter that's also thin enough to easily fit under a cuff. The hands and dial should have no lume, and only have the bare essentials for telling the time (I think an argument could be made that a date is superfluous). The hands should ideally be baton or dauphine and the dial should be conservative in colour and finish (no flashy snowflake or sunburst). The strap should be a dark leather to complement your attire, bracelets are a definite no.

I think it's important to add that once upon a time sporting generally meant any activity outside work or formal events, such as riding horses, walking, hunting, and even gambling. It wasn't just sports as we see them now. So really a sport watch is just a watch you wear everyday. In modern watch parlance there really is not a hard distinction between tool watches (eg divers, some chronos, field, any watch designed with a specific professional purpose in mind) and sport watches (eg nomos club, oyster perpetual). The lines have really blurred, but that is where therm came from.

By keeping vicious track of its current rate, and setting it 3.5 times that ahead/behind every sunday at 5:30pm. Good watches can stay within 30 seconds of atomic time all week long, that way.

And also by getting a quartz shitter that gains like 0.32s per day, and realizing that even this would drive me up the wall if I let it. So I didn't, and that fixed that.

That's weird, the setting gears should turn the minute wheel first which then turns the hour wheel. Only way I can think of how that's possible is that your minute hand is loose (but hasn't come clearly off). The setting parts also have nothing to do with the auto winding. Maybe you've hit it hard, loosening both the hand and the rotor?

Does it seem like it's winding the mainspring? If so... Eh fuck it, it's hard to say without seeing it anyway. Get a nh35 and swap it in, THEN take the 7s26 apart and try to find the problem if you want. I'm pretty sure it's something easy, but a 7s26 is not really worth the trouble anymore.

By realizing that there are 86400 seconds in a day and how amazing it is that a purely mechanical instrument can measure them with a variation of usually less than .01% (or .007% for a chronometer) while dealing with friction, gravity, shock, variations in temperature, and being powered by an inconsistent drive force. To me the imperfect but adequate precision provides another level of interest in the watch when comparing the timing to the atomic clock every few days. Whether the day to day changes are small or large, consistent or inconsistent, they give the watch a sort of personality of its own

No they don't. That's just a regular ass date function. Annual calendars keep track of how many days are in a month, while perpetual calendars keep track of that as well as leap years.

And who postes artifacts, beyound our human comprehension. And also his collection of field watch shitters.

Listen to me, you need to do this! You have to study to make the mistakes extra accurate so we have to google the damn words to understand. That would be the greatest, most elaborate larp on this board.
