If you want an actual USSR era watch, then watch out for frankens.
The easiest commiewatch to get would be an east-german Ruhla. Since they're nowhere near as sought after as classic Raketa or Poljot, there isn't a lot of fakes. The problem will mostly be that the few "iconic" models get a it pricey for what they are, and most of them have been left in disrepair either because everyone replaced them with better stuff after the unification or because östalgia sellers don't know how to deal with watches.

>One day I was browsing the eBay to find my next buy and I found this beauty, just sitting there, with no bids and 26h left till the auction ends. And after long and nervous 26 hours I snagged myself an amazing example of Russian horology.

>This one is amazing, because of the patina on the dial. It kind of looks like space or a splatter of pain. This was the main reason why I didn’t hesitate and put in my bid. I was almost ready to pay the 80$, usually, they go for $70 in perfect condition, a lot better than this. But this just spoke to me and I couldn’t resist.

>Overall I’m very pleased with my purchase. Everyone says that the watch looks amazing, and when I ask the price, everyone says 400-1000$ but I bought the watch for 60$. I really got myself an amazing deal.

Certain types of dials will inevitably and universally age to the point where all original examples will have patinated dials. Collectors simply prefer the ones where the aging happened in a way they find interesting or visually appealing so that the watch remains wearable. The alternative would be restoring the dial what's a big no to most purists. Guy you quoted didn't overpay for the watch, he was just taken with the unique aesthetics of the dial.
"Tropicalized" Rolex dials as popularized by Hodinkee is an entirely different thing, a marketing ploy to sell inferior condition vintage pieces to new money collectors at exorbitant prices.

The Rolex cyclops is the shittiest "feature" in watchmaking. Wilsdorf was truly a marketing genius to sell people on having this gigantic deforming lens taking up 20% of the watch face as a feature, so that you can have the date appear larger. Why not just, I don't know, move the watch 1 inch closer to see what the date is? It's not like it's on your wrist or something...

I mean, for a watch that I intend to wear daily for decades to come... when I think about it that way it doesn't seem too bad.
My mortage and bills are roughly equal to 1.5 weeks pay so the remaining 2.5 weeks pay goes into savings every month (I'm too depressed to invest as that takes some effort).

Every proper watch ends up as a safe queen, not because of the collector's fear of damages but for his desire for variety in life. Things are meant to be used in their proper context and you'll end up with a dozen pieces suiting different occasions even if you have a social life as reclusant as I have.
On the other hand some man keeps fucking the same woman for 30 odd years and calls it happiness, something I've never quite understood. Is it a fault of women or my own, I often wonder, and it's the same with watches.

it is definitely a different take on it. i like the design and i think it was done on purpose it gives it greater depth as opposed to the original. i think it’s the same reason they opted not to use the applied logo.

i recall reading an interview with the guy who designed the sla017 and a lot of thought went into it and i love it. i can handle the 39.5/40mm perfectly well on my wrist so it’s cool.

also the 8L35b is superb. i am super impressed with it. that MEMS tech is no joke. it keeps the same damn rate of +2spd at basically any position and under any type of usage and temperature variation. i have no idea why Seiko doesn’t shove it into more watches.

oh, so the sla017 is made by the same studio that makes grand seikos. the movement, 8l35b is a grand seiko movement in all but name as it’s just a 9S but with lesser decoration. in regards to the technology, the 8l35b is in the same level of quality as rolex’s 313x calibre. the 8L has it’s own set of neat tricks like MEMS manufactured parts, lossier curve on the hairspring and in general it’s an extremely robust architecture which i like my watches to have. it’s especially well suited to handle temperature variations which is one of the primary enemies of a mechanical movement.

in regards to the construction, the case is made of hardened steel and in general the finishing on the hands, dial, indices is on par with a GS, since it’s literally made by the same dudes.

as for the price of the watch, i guess it’s subjective. i bought it because i liked it and met all of my wants!

whats the point of buying an expensive watch when A)you could spend the money on something else that mattered more to you; or B)the designs just dont speak to you or C)it will never fit you anyway unless you "upgraded" your whole suite

and if you say, "well I want an expensive watch to impress other people.." thats just pure insecurity and compensation.

And yeah this, compensating for what? Being able to buy your entire family? LMFAO having good shit and not being afraid to show that you have good shit isn't compensation, it's a literal function of you having good shit, it's just normal social status signaling. You're not compensating for anything since you actually made it. Now losers wearing watches above their social station, that's compensating and fakery.

If you have to autistically analyze your purchases in whatever socioeconomic category you want to belong, then you don't belong and you should fix your life first.

the way i see it,,a watch just needs to fulfill 2 functions
1)does it address your needs
2)does it bring you personal satisfaction

Items 1 & 2 are entirely self determined. If you dont care about flaunting personal wealth (regardless of if you have it or not), then common famous entry luxury watches wouldnt even really enter the equation. A $2000 nomos/seiko/oris or whatever will largely be 'good enough'. (well, maybe a GS will be nice for the autism, but certainly not a Rolex..)

Keep in mind that the huge modern luxury watch industry is mostly marketing BS invented to survive the quartz crisis, much like de beers marketed diamonds to women so they could sell plentiful sparkly chunks of literal charcoal as "a girl's best friend" and a "must buy"

this $6000 gold tone Gshock hand hammered by the most skilled nippon craftsmen.

>The most important element to any Hammer Tone G-Shock is of course the Tsuiki finishing of the case. Tsuiki is a technique that is based on using a hammer to create a relief design on metal sheets and something that, Casio say, “has been handed down from 1,200 years ago.” It is an ancient Japanese metalworking technique that has been used to shape, decorate and harden pieces of metal used for armors, copper-ware and more.

>A little bit of research into the matter reveals that there actually are literally hundreds of different types of hammers and nails that are used to shape a flat piece of bronze or other metal into the desired shape and/or to decorate them with the desired pattern. The Casio G-Shock Hammer Tone pieces are decorated by Bihou Asano, a master metalworker in Kyoto, Japan; needless to say, with all cases and metal bands being hand-made, no two will be alike.

Russiaboo here, fluent in Russian. I can help you find all these watches. For the copernicus, Raketa has an official store based out of France, so if you're in the EU, no tax. https://raketa.com/

Raketa itself is an amazing brand, everything in house, they have a lot of really out there designs, 24h watches, watches that go on the opposite direction and stuff lik the Copernicus. Their watches go to a max of 2k€.

They're one of the oldest watch companies still active, starting in the 1700s as a mining company. Their factory is in the outskirts of Saint Petersburg, it used to be a big complex, it was destroyed during the WWII and now it's about 1/4th of the size, with the main building being a shitty mall (really sad). They offer free tours of the factory in English, French and Russian, I took the English one and it was just me with a french apprentice going over everything. Really amazing story, amazing work, a ton of the machines are still from the USSR time, along with some newer ones for more precise pieces. Overall, I wholeheartly recommend you to check them out and visit them if you ever get the chance to visit Saint Petersburg.

That sells their "new and improved" models that are insultingly ugly and miss the point of all their classic designs.
The only worthwhile watches they currently sell are the Polar Reissue because it hasn't changed much, the Russian Code because it's quite unique, and the Avant-Garde.
Some of their new 24h watches are okay, their regular stuff is mostly bland, their homages are terrible.
The new Copernic is a special brand of awful. They missed the point of their own design even harder than Movado and that's saying something.

100% agree with you on that. I own a few Raketa but only the USSR shit. The new ones, while fairly priced taking into account it's an in house and I must say, I love the pattern on the interior of the movement, the designs are totally not for me, that's why I only did the tour and didn't buy anything. I love the cosmonaut motif, but the ovalish case (not sure what the proper name for it is) isn't for me.

Fun fact for those reading into Raketa, using 0 instead of 12 in the dial was started after WWII to signify the rebirth of the brand.

not that anon, but it's obvious that choosing a dirt cheap watch is just trying to project a false image of humble status. there's literally nothing wrong with wearing an expensive watch, whether you're billionaire rich or not.

I like those straps, but I can't go back to inferior clasps. Tri-folds are just so much better than every other option.

It's kind of cool, but not worth the several hundred dollar premium that companies charge for them. It's also just too busy/flashy and that really limits it's versatility.

Sure. That's why steel was used in tool watches. But compare 18k to 24k, which is still a tradition in Asian jewellery, you can scratch that with a fingernail.

First time seeing that variant. Looks great, almost reminiscent of the Tudor brown/red aesthetic.

Non, saw them in person, matte dial is not a deep black and feels out of place, matte black is a tool watch dial. Slivered dial is hard to read in reality.

White dial is the one you should get. Easy to ready and suits the watch much better.
