In a fit of deranged cabin fever I bought a special edition Christopher Ward C60 Apex.

At this point, I must stress - I adore stupid, gaudy, colorful shit. Life's entirely too short for good taste.

It arrived. I opened it. The buyer's remorse was instant, colossal, dizzying. I tried to like it but my disgust moved inside me like continental drift, slow and inexorable. The machining, the size, the materials. I just stared at it, sitting limp in my hand. It was like an excruciating memory of some terrible shame, one of those pubescent embarrassments you've spent a lifetime trying not to recall when you close your eyes at night. Like holding a perfect turd in your hand, one with you own face embossed in it, sneering back at you.

"You hate me," says the face in the turd. "You hate me, because this is what you are. You deserve this."

You try to fling the turd away, to run from it, to deny it. But you can't. It has somehow become strapped to your wrist with the handy quick-release bracelet, and besides, now you look at it, it kind of matches your flipflops.

I'd probably still be wearing it if my wife hadn't come into the room, assessed the situation, and quickly waved her Omega SMP in front of me to bring me to my senses.

Luckily, Christopher Ward has a tremendous after-sales and returns policy, and accepted my return for a full refund no questions asked. A+++ great experience would buy again.

>enjoy AR sapphire, hacking/handwinding NH36 movement, solid endlinks and bracelet, well aligned chapter ring, and 100% Seiko OEM compatibility

Finally got my first speedy. It's the 2000s reissue of the broad hands 1957 model, with an hexalite crystal and solid caseback. The differences between it and a professional moonwatch are cosmetic only (both have the calibre 1861), but man do I love those differences. Got it on Monday and have been wearing it non-stop since. If you're in doubt if a speedmaster is worth the money, it definitely is.

Manufacturers add literally toxic shit to industrial processes, all of which they do not need to disclose and actively hide, even in food. An easy example is many ingredients in foods you eat containing mercury due to the choralkali process(it creates chorline and sodium hydroxide which are used universally in food production for processing, changing pH, etc).

These watches are made of a literal mystery of who-knows-what industrial, lowest bidder ching chong bullshit, and because everything is from china now or some other 2nd world regulation-less dump(yes, your Stowa/Seiko/Damasko/Vostok/99% "SWISS MADE" watches/etc), you can't escape it unless you look very carefully.

I'd love to put the one of those $10 Casio f91 watches into some kind of mass spectrometer just to see all of the random toxic shit in the plastic case and resin strap, probably contributing to malignancy, or dementia, or who knows what else.

>>15462841
Well, the problems associated with that really aren't demonstrated in life. We absorb things through our skin and the effects are known. The concern with non-ionizing radiation is due to the idea that it increases metabolism in areas closest to the source, which I suppose would accelerate some kind of malignancy, but I doubt it, frankly.

I'd actually expect Casio to be pretty good on that front. They're pretty strict about their material standards and I'd bet that everything that comes from suppliers is pretty exhaustively tested before being turned into watches, not because of health concerns but because they have standards for UV and chemical resistance, durability, elasticity, etc. that they've built their reputation on and it'd be a disaster for them if watches started falling apart after a month in the sun or whatever. You can do pretty reliable, good quality manufacturing in China if you own your own factories and have the right people to manage the supply chain, it's smaller batch contract manufacturing or no-name chinkshit brands that you really need to worry about.

All that said, I think the real answer if you're really concerned is to go with all stainless steel watches and bracelets from respectable brands, or if that's not enough do the same with titanium, and either way clean the watch before wearing it to make sure it doesn't have anything leftover from manufacturing on it. I have pretty sensitive skin and get discomfort and sometimes even rashes from polymer and some leather straps but I've never had an issue with a steel bracelet.

People asked about learning to repair watches in the last thread, and what books to get etc. I'd suggest just watching youtube videos. There are a ton, you see how the movements work, what basic tools you need, what kinda things you need to do etc. Google the fine details. Then just find old busted shitters to work on, preferrably several of the same movements because you will lose small parts like springs and screws when they shoot out of your tweezers and don't want to wait for replacement parts. You need a lot, A LOT of hands on experience, and will fuck up all the time in the beginning (and from time to time even when you are experienced). That's how you learn. Take a break when you get frustrated, work on another one.

>That oxford cloth button down shirt they're wearing is a hOmAgE sHiRt to a Brooks Brothers original. Those penny loafers are a hOmAgE sHoE to a GH Bass Weejun. Besides ignorance, hypocrisy and watchsnobs being ass-holes, why is copying a watch's design seen as such a mortal sin?

Most people just know that Rolex exists but couldn't tell you the name of any of their models.
People who know though will probably be okay with an homage - especially from Tisell since they are a pretty legit entry-level brand - but will not only not fall for a replica but seriously look down on you for owning one.
The opinions of hardcore snobs are entirely irrelevant, to most of them watch collecting is just a dick-measuring contest to see who has the most expensive thing on their wrists.

Can't speak for other snobs, but I think fake watches (I consider "homages" like the Tissell fake watches, copy pasting everything ain't a homage) to be a waste of money. I understand liking a particular timepiece and not having thousands to spend on it. But instead of seeing copies of it as a low price Rolex, omega or whatever, I see them as incredibly overpriced watches with cheap movements. First of all, I think Rolex is ridiculously overpriced. I also love the new movement from the seiko 5kx that so many of the more well done replicas use. But I don't think fitting that nice movement in a submariner case makes it worth 600 dollars or more. I won't belittle anyone for wearing a fake (unless they make a point of bragging about how it's such a brilliant decision), but I'll think their money could be better spent in an original timepiece from the same price range

homage =/ = fake
fake watches have intent for deceit, the brand name is copied, every detail is copied as faithfully as possible, the more expensive ones even attempt to clone or mask the movement to look like the real one.

homage watches dont say rolex on the dial, they dont pretend to be a rolex watch, they actually advertise theres a seiko/miyota inside. Its merely a lookalike, like how even in nature you have moths mimicking wasps, or non venomous snakes copying the colour pattern of highly venomous ones

calling homage watches "fake watches" is like calling every jean that isnt a Levis a fake Levis

I posted a while back about polishing the crystal on my old Seiko, and I just tried it out. Total cost: maybe 20 bucks if you don't have a dremel and a piece of glass.

I bought some cheap diamond paste of aliexpress, it was about 3 bucks for 8 tubes. I tried using it with a dremel, and just rubbing it in with a cloth by hand, but neither really made a dent.

What worked well was just taking an old smartphone, in my case a Samsung S2, and using that as a flat surface to grind my watch against with the 10 micron paste. This obviously scratches the shit out of the phone, so you could just use a regular piece of glass or a tile or something instead. This worked great, although it took a while, but I could see the edges of the watch crystal getting frosty as I ground it down to the center, removing all the scratches.

Then I just polished it again with 3.5 and 1 micron, followed by a felt wheel on my dremel. I managed to put a scratch on it at the end because the 0.5 micron paste I bought was filled with shards of fucking metal or something and using it was a mistake (see the left hand side), but overall I went from having a very gouged hardlex crystal to one with a couple of very minor scratches, and it only cost me 3 bucks and maybe an hour.

Well worth doing instead of replacing the glass, and a lot cheaper.

"Homage" is a pretty nebulous term that could really use more gradiation. In music terms, you've got horological equivalents of Elvis impersonators (fakes), cover bands (carbon copies in all but name like the Tissell), tribute bands (stuff like the SKX that takes all of its main features from the Sub but isn't an exact clone) and then ones that are obviously influenced by the icons but don't pretend to be them, like my Ball here, which has a bunch of Explorer in it but would never be mistaken for a clone. They all get wrapped up into "homage" except for maybe the last category, which is funny to me because I think it's the one that I think the term suits best, and it's the one I'd rather see more of than the closer copies.
