What is the point of cheap automatics? I recently just replaced my broken 3.5 year old Seiko 5 with a Casio A158A, and after a week with my new $14 watch, IDK why you would ever buy a cheap automatic, the cost of having the watch serviced is more than the watch itself. And at least an expensive automtic has the allure of being handmade, and some notion of reliability, Seiko 5's are just shit out in mass quantity like quartz watches, but are way more prone to failure and cost more to have fixed.

If you're thinking about buying a Seiko 5, dont. Just buy a Citizen Eco-Drive, it's way more reliable and basically never needs servicing, or save up for an automatic that is worth a shit.

there are some shitposts in the HH world

this $180,000 Haldimann H8 has no hour or minute hands, only a tourbillion in the centre, forcing you to "be in time" or "appreciate time". You *cannot* tell the time, only observe the tourbillion spinning around.

>Its charming dance can be admired not just head-on, but at any angle up to 90 degrees. As a result, the observer is rewarded with a much more thorough tourbillon experience that is difficult to describe in precise words.

the Haldimann H9 ($200,000) takes it 1 step futher. It is a fully working watch with hand engravings, hour and minute hand, and a "triple barrel flying tourbillion"--- but hides it under an opaque black sapphire crystal. Now there *is* time, but you cannot see it, only hear it.

The Seiko 5 is a great entry to auto watches for non-watch people, kids, etc. I have one going on over a decade of rough use without service. I'm always shilling Glycine's The Chief because it's a tasteful reedition of a classic pilot watch with actual history, a sturdy swiss movement, a 40mm diameter that will suit most wrists just fine and a 12mm height that will fit comfortably under a shirt cuff, all for $500:

Get the hked bund. It's almost good except the decided to take the hked logo off of the latest batch and now the dial is a bit unbalanced. Still it's got the look and a seagull movement for less that $500.

Do they have some customization options or something? The hole in the dial looks ridiculous.

The rest looks really good, though I'd be happier with a more Speedy-styled case and pushers/crown like the new TAG has, a little bit beefier. That's in general my only complaint about this watch style, the lugs and the pushers always look a bit too dainty.

>A watch with a bezel that takes up 40% of the watch-face real estate is a versatile watch

I honestly don't get the appeal of dive watches. Specifically those with bezels. Why do you like having a huge chunk of your surface area taken up by a bezel that you never use? Would it not be better to have this actually be watch face? That way you can add another complication in there, or have room to spread the numbers out and create a nice symmetrical and /effay/ face instead of a cramped one? Or you can just have a smaller watch face instead of an intrusive bulky one?

Ultimately, I don't see the appeal of bezels. They seem gaudy, tacky, and unnecessary. I don't get why you would want your watch to have so much of it taken up by something so useless.

Since Sinn and Damasko don't scratch easy, I thought getting used might have been a smart idea because watch brands like seiko and omega depreciate, but german tool watches go for roughly the same price, which ticks me off. If you're going to get a "field watch" it might as well either be one of those or a casio, right?

That's an interesting watch, I just saw they came out. Also the north american AD (watchbuys) is claiming a price increase at the end of the month on the whole lineup on Sinn.

The U50 have great dimensions and weight considering the 500m WR and the U-Boat stahl. But it does not have any other Sinn tech like low temperature oils or Ar dehumidifier. In a way this would make the watch easier to work on (no need to send it back to germany because of the gas filling) since it's an ordinary 300 series Selita mvt. I'm passing on it for the Pelagos LHD because it's not as Sinn as a Sinn can be anyway.I also can't try it on in any store...

It's mind boggling to me that Rolex/Tudor and Omega are still using those ostentatious helium escape valves on watches when they could modernize the construction and just use better seals and gas filling. I mean Rolex service is expensive as it is, they might as well go full-on in Tech.

so how come my cheap ass 30m timex still works flawlessly after hundreds of showers, hundreds of submersions in dish water, and thousands of hand washings where I explicitly soap and rinse the watch at the same time?
two reasons:
1) you're making up or parroting someone who made up the bar vs dive depth argument
2) there's no certification for WR in the industry, so watch makers just slap whatever number they think will sell on the dial with no accountability. they're overestimating to the nearest 30, 50, 100 etc at best, and flat-out lying at worst.
