That's a complete contradiction, how is someone going to receive or accept charity if they're not a beggar in the first place? What, is that guy actively looking for the temporarily embarrassed captains of industry who refuse all help at least 200 times so they have to be forcibly restrained and fed soup kitchen soup lest they perish, and then he gives them money?

Or is he just a hypocritical weasel like all the other rich people.

You can get them these days with a month of battery life, although not if you enable seconds.

Personally the only smartwatch I have any respect for are the Timex Datalinks, I've been waiting fucking years for a USB dress version with the expanding bracelet to pop up on eBay. I've got one of these on right now, 2 year battery life, fully programmable (if you can handle the hell that is writing assembly code), my only issue is the dumb look and the bizarre bracelet that's half folded links, half shitty pieces of rubber that will eventually degrade and fall apart. Battery life drops a lot if you play tetris on it though.

Seiko would be a good brand to browse then. Other anons laid out a number of viable alternatives. Plenty of microbrands packing a lot of value into watches in the $200 ballpark as well, better features than you'll often find for the same price from larger manufacturers. At $150 the world is your oyster though, find some styles and models that speak to you and come here with some questions or seeking opinions on them to narrow it down.

Will replace at least one maybe both with a green and blue I prefer perhaps with quartz to save money but we will see. The sne109 will be pricey for what it is because discontinued but oh well. The victorinox I have handled in another color way and it was quite nice. After that just have to round it out with a gold formal wear and perhaps my two grails, a seiko skyliner deco in light blue and a Porsche compass watch.

you are pretty much fucked.

with a lot of training you might increase it by 1/4 inch. Its not explosive growth like a bicep because the wrist doesn't have any big muscle its mostly just tendons.

your eventual wrist size is largely determined by genetics (body frame type + gender) and secondarily to a much smaller extent if you have engaged in a lot of manual labour/training during your puberty phase.

i do. i feel like the explorer was meant to be a small watch. the idea being for it to be ultra reliable, out of the way but there when you need it.

i agree on the lack of lumed numerals, but it’s never bothered me. my 114270’s other strengths outweigh its weaknesses. it’s like a tiny/little 36mm tank on your wrist. i’ve gone through a ridiculous number of watches in my life and the 114270 is the one that feels perfect for me every single time.

if i were you though i’d wait. who is to say rolex won’t bring it back down to 36mm in its next iteration? if they don’t, you’ll still have your pick of a ton of mint and NOS 14270’s and 114270’s from tons of sellers. rolex pumped out so many of them between the late 90s and 2010 that i wouldn’t worry about missing your chance to own one.

Next watch will be some kind of mechanical GMT with a max budget of like 5k, so it'll be by far my nicest watch, but I haven't decided what to get yet.

You're the Anon with the Ball...I remember. I think your collection is just fine; I always wondered personally what the Citizem flightmaster was like (it had by far the most complex dial layout I'd ever seen on a watch....I love the idea that one can 'do anything' with it...).

What draws you to a GMT? Is it the function alone, or something additional? Are you thinking Rolex or other?

I don't believe that for a second. Gold looks fine on everyone; the challenge is what leather strap colour you have. Rose gold is a challenge, as it introduces a red into the skin which an be a problem, but yellow gold is fine.

Do you have a specific interest in using a diver for a dinner watch, or is it just an option that came across and you like the design? Also, have you tried one on?

They're okay for modern dress watches, but the tradition was one of luxurious comfort. While a bracelet indicated refinement in manufacture, it still would take away the eye's interest from the watch head, so the leather band is a 'neutral' element to the design, allowing all the attention to be focused on the horological execution.

For women it's different, of course: the more precious metals and diamonds the better. But for men, you're looking for something that could be described as 'understated'. This literally means 'efficient' in terms of legibility, simplicity, and aesthetic balance.

Handwind would be OK too (maybe even better, because affordable movements with complications are already quite thick and an auto rotor tends to put them into hambeast territory).
But it must not necessarily have the navitimer design (though I wouldn't mind a homage), it just needs a slide rule. Flighmaster and Skyhawk I know and I kinda dig their ultra-busy looks, but they're even busier than the navitimer or pic related, and those are already hard enough to read, so I'd like to have something a tad more minimal.

I'm a pilot, most aviation stuff runs on UTC rather than local time so the GMT function is really useful to have, plus it's nice for travel. For now I use the Skyhawk's little LCD display but when I finish my commercial license (next year hopefully) I want to get something nice, parents might get it for me as a "graduation present" but if not I'll just buy it myself.

Rolex is definitely out of my price range, especially if my folks end up being the ones buying it. My basic requirements are:
>2-5k
>40-43mm
>Not too thick
>Clear dial without too much clutter
>Easy to read, and hard to misread, 24hr GMT display
>Natural steel or titanium finish with a nice bracelet
>Preferably a rotating GMT bezel
Beyond that I'm pretty open to various options. The Breitling Aerospace is high on my list but I'm not in love with the styling and it's a lot of money for a quartz. I'm also liking what I see of the Tudor GMT. Sinn makes a few contenders (pic related), and a GMT Seamaster could also be a possibility.

As for the Citizens, they're technically really cool watches and really nicely built for the money, but they're also chunky dinner plates with too much dial clutter and I only really use the GMT function on them. I've had the black Navihawk for years, got it as a gift and liked the idea but it was just too hard to read and I don't really like black watches, so I went looking for another affordable watch with GMT and ended up settling on the Skyhawk, which is basically the same thing but wears smaller (due to the smaller crystal) and is much easier to read.

Well, you're talking with an Anon who doesn't give a shit about tradition; I'm only going by how horological houses tend to group their own watches and the function they serve (as dictated by the general clientele they serve and the expectations reserved within).

I've worn my Seagull 1963 to funerals, the Seamaster to Black Tie affairs, and the Nighthawk to the gunrange. In a sense, none of it really matters if it's the watch you want, either for the purpose, or because you just want to wear that one on that particular day. When I get the Mark 40 back from servicing, I'll be wearing it all the time, regardless of the function (unless I'm working on tour, which is when the Waltham Vanguard is used exclusively).

The old traditions are long gone in the western world, and unless you're having dinners in Olde Englishe Clubs or fraternizing with Masons, none of this shit matters.

The 'dress watches made of gold' actually does have a logical justification; it was the most expensive and workable material available for watches from the 1800s until the early 1940s. It didn't tarnish like silver, it was beautiful and coveted, and so forth.

Check out the IWC Timezoner Spitfire for something above your budget that could be cool. Or just the IWC Spitfire UTC for a cheaper version without a rotating bezel.

If you're still not sold just get a Sinn or ((Zodiac)). Maybe Oris Aquis GMT since I have a friend with this one and it actually looks quite nice in real life.
I only caution you against getting something that you'd later want to upgrade because, if you're doing this for a job, the watch is likely going to matter more to you than it would to joe schmo. Just my unsolicited two cents.

Well, first off good luck for getting the commercial license (my uncle was a pilot for Lufthansa until he retired a few years ago); you should be proud and your parents doubly so.

To be honest, here's what I'd suggest. Wait.

Yup, just wait. When you're a pilot, you'll be making bank, and in a few years you can easily afford a Rolex GMT or anything else that comes across your radar. When I graduated (not as a pilot, as an expert in another field), I was more deeply concerned about my ability to get employment than anything else. My parents didn't get me a graduation present, but I never expected them to given that they paid for my higher education in full. I graduated debt free, ready to take on the world. It's been a few years, but now I can simply go after the watches I've always wanted without them necessarily being connected with a singular event or time in my life.

If you can hold out, then simply wait. Get a job with a major airline, make bank, and then buy whatever the fuck you want. Pilots are paid well, for good reason, and if you're careful with your investments, a Rolex isn't out of the question. I can personally recommend the GMT II, though I only owned it for a few months before trading it for what I really wanted at the time. There's nothing wrong with the watch, but lose all prior expectations about owning a Rolex if you've never owned one before. It's just a watch...a very well engineered and reliable watch, but just a watch nevertheless. As a pilot, you won't stick out with it, but it doesn't matter if you love it. I bought it for the reputation, but didn't love it...therefore I traded it for another watch.

Just go for what watch makes you smile, but make sure you try them on in person before planning your budget. If it doesn't sing to you on the wrist, it's not worth it.

I've been tempted by them before. In my eyes, they produce the most 'Flieger' watch existent today. Fuck me...I have 'finished' the list under 10,000 for now...but the damn Flieger A from Laco keeps vying for my attention like a prostitute in the window near the Oude Kirke....

Basically, for lume you make sure the camera is stable, the watch is stable, and you're in low-light and that you can adjust the exposure. Then experiment.

I'm in my 30s doing the career change thing and paying my own way through flight school so my situation with my folks is a bit different as well, and they want to do something nice for me when I finish training, and I'd really like to have something nice to wear during the first 5 years or so of my career. I also have a specific motive for wanting a nice midrange/entry level luxury watch as well, which is that I'm leaning toward corporate/private aviation and the right watch can be a big benefit when dealing with very wealthy clients (something I'm already used to doing in my current job), and a watch in the Breitling, Tudor, Omega, etc. range projects about the right image of social class and professionalism to make me seem right for the job.

That being said I need to be able to dress a bit nicer for work time to time now. I haven’t tried one on yet, but it’s pretty comparable to my current daily watch.

> Does that watch look good? Yes. Great, I'll buy it.

yes but no. What movement is in the watch? what material is the case? what size is it? what is its heritage? is it a new watch or a vintage? what year is it made? how rare is it? whats the cost? if its a vintage what is its condition or patina? theres a lot of factors. Many fashion watches "look good" but they are totally dogshit worthless horology wise and not even worth the shipping cost.

If it's a cheap watch then none of that matters. Design is everything which is why fashion watches sell so well.

>> No.15448262

what? it absolutely matters. There are a ton of cheap vintages floating on ebay, but their true worth is their condition, history of manufacture, age, rarity etc. Anyone can buy a brand new watch still in production with enough money. But vintage hunting can take weeks or even months for the right specimen to show up

The issue is, for lots of folks materials of construction matter. Quality visible materials will drive up the cost of a watch regardless of the movement. "Looking good" typically requires a good base metal, a nice crystal and attention to detail on the dial and hands that you will not find in cheap mall designer watches. If you can't spot the difference it means you don't know what you are looking at which means your opinion is void.

I don't have experience or much of an opinion on Steinhart, but they are not the only submariner clone out there. Most diver watches are inspired by one of two or three original designs, regardless if they are $50 or $5,000. That one is a pretty damn direct copy, but don't let it stop you if you really like it. If you're looking for a one-watch solution to all of life's applications, you may want to consider something more in the field, aviator or chrono range as they tend to dress up better with suits and sport coats and the likes. You can pull off a dress diver, but lots of folks don't like to.

its not always the case. For vintages if the piece is rare enough and the condition good enough looks will take a 2nd seat.

I'll try to have it serviced next time I drop by in Germany, I doubt anyone will service it where I am.
Keep in mind though, Ruhla isn't Vostok, Raketa or Poljet, their watches were never that good and do not age well in general. Their clocks were pretty good, their chess clocks almost kept them afloat for a few months after the reunification, their watches not so much.
