They can be OK but that particular watch is all over the place. The case says vintage field watch, the dial and handset says dress watch, and I dunno what the strap says but I don't like the sound of it, and you can't even change that shit easily with wire lugs. god those lmao
they look and feel extremely cheap, my 1st immediate thought when opening the box was 'wow what a shitty looking strap'

I appreciate that its made out of canvas (more 'premium' than nylon) but in practice its worse than a $2 AE nylon nato. Mine started to fray abit at the end and got gross after just 1.5 months of wearing before I swapped it out. At least with a nylon strap any fraying can be fixed with a lighter.

wow thats a good point but they dont say

i think they can/would have easily used a aerosol varnish or fixative(basically a binding coat). When I was in art school we would use those for our charcoal/chalk pastel drawings so they wouldn't just smudge into dogshit when we had to store them after. The fixative would very slightly darken the colours but afterwards you could rub your face against it and nothing would ever come off.

aliexpress. polijot DE has the extra large window. Taobao/tmall has the official one made by Seagull themselves now but its almost 2x more expensive without the exhibition caseback (why!!)

>fake or legit
my man this is a real rabbithole and depends on how you see it. From what I remember in the past Seagull licensed the design to various other factories to make them. There is a plethora of various versions now, from 38mm to 40mm to 42mm, choice of acrylic or sapphire, and in all sorts of colourways, with less text, with more text, with the red lettering, without the red lettering, with swan-neck, without swan-neck. And theres also the story of HKED who was involved with the WUS initiative to make the most accurate-to-history seagull1963 (thats why his 1963 looks different).

I think Seagull after seeing how much of a foreign hit this watch was started to produce it themselves a few years ago. In china this watch is not popular at all.

DIY Watch Club.

More detail: I originally tried to look into buying shit myself, rather than getting a kit. That's very doable, but it's a bit like jumping into the deep end of the pool needlessly. I quickly discovered that I was gonna spend 20+ hours doing research on buying parts for a project I had never done before, which was a bit of a stupid risk. So I just went with the easy, send-me-the-shit-I-need route. The kit was well-made and a fun process. The end product felt way higher end than I expected, though it's obviously maybe worth $100, if that, in parts. Building it took two hours or so, which I found really nice. I also now have the tools for building other watches, should I ever want to do so.

I'll note that I'm far from a "watch guy," so it's very possible what I have is some cringy trash, but I found it a fun afternoon project.

>>15443076
It's a huge pain in the ass but a sort of fun process. The crown was fine except for having to remove it - the little button to release it was an unexpected pain in the ass. The dial was fine, but the hands were a fucking nightmare of difficulty, particularly in getting them nice and lined up at 12 while also being sufficiently angled/distant with respect to the movement.

The WORST problem: once you get the hands and dial on, you gotta get it into the case. What happened to me was that the movement holder slipped, pushed my dial partially off, and I had to re-attach it while carefully avoiding bending the hands. It was stressful as all fuck.

Also, cleaning it at the end can be a bit stressful, but by that point it's all downhill.

I like different styles and watches for different applications, days, whatever. Not much into the jewelry aspect beyond finding the aesthetics pleasant. If it keeps good time and has a baseline of quality construction and components I prefer variation and quantity over extreme levels of quality/worth. My wedding ring is the most expensive wearable that I own. I would not be comfortable with thousands of dollars on my wrist even if I did not mind investing that heavily into a watch.

Amphibia are cool but they don't scratch a budget itch not already scratched on my end. The g-shocks are inexpensive and two were gifts, the green one serves a dedicated purpose for anything on or in the water thanks to Herschel Supply Co's cool tidal and lunar features. I've got a retro style field watch in the mail from Maratac to scratch a super simplified utility itch (picture related). Beyond that I'm relatively content with where my collection is.

>budget up to $2000
get a bunch of less expensive ones, there's no single good watch at this price
>budget $2000 to $20000
get a single expensive watch, because this is where there's a huge jump in quality and you can get something that is really, really nice that you'll cherish for a while. buying a few cheaper watches in this range will only make you wish you went all-in on one
>budget $20k+
unless you're mega loaded you're better off splitting it among a bunch of really, really nice watches instead of going all-in on an aquanaut chrono. because you're starting to get into "target for organized crime" range and you probably don't have a bodyguard unless you're super wealthy or important.

F91W. Everything else is just a bad idea.

Gshocks are only alright if you replace the strap with something sensible, but there aren't a lot of choices because the lug length is retarded. Stock Casio straps are complete garbage and designed to fall off your wrist within 2 years. So just spend 10 bucks on an F91W and buy a new one when the strap inevitably fails, or get a 2 dollar nylon strap (not NATO) and keep it for a decade.

Note that oceAnii are high-end in the sense of it being Casio's finest and the same "tough" polyurethane-float movement mounting technology they use in g-shocks. It's not "high end" like it had smooth seconds, a snap date (it rolls over using a stepper motor over like a second or so), or a thermocompensated timekeeping function. For Casioesque features though, it's not really missing any given its form factor. (e.g. air pressure or gps stuff can't be squeezed into a non-digital watch anyway.)

Military issue watches are just consumer watches picked for their sturdiness, very few are designed on demand (aside from what? Marathon, Luminox and that one Yema?)
Pilot watches are full of stuff that's better handled by on-board instruments that are now one every plane other than bare-bones gyros
Racing chronographs are outperformed by digital clocks and have been made obsolete by laser traps and photo-finishes
Divers might be the only ones that still see some legitimate use but offshore rig divers don't wear Submariners, that's for sure.

The funny thing with pilot watches, though, is that they've pretty much always been larp. The Navitimer, and all of the watches that copied it, were from day one little more than aviation-themed jewelry made for (mostly amateur) pilots who wanted to show off on the ground. The Rolex GMT and all the watches that have its sort of function were the real pilot tool watches and continue to be useful both inside and out of the cockpit, both for tracking UTC/Zulu time and just for keeping track of multiple time zones when you're in a different one every day.
