And while I do understand that the men autistically involved in the intricacies of watches generally don't care about style, please do try to remember that we're on the /fa/ board and we like to try and keep things effay here.

That's fair, having multiple wallets is useful. Though I generally don't see any occasion where it necessitates bringing 10+ cards. But having a long wallet that can hold bills and a few coins crisply is useful, so long as you have a place to put the wallet that doesn't look bad.

You're afraid of AIDS? I mean, I know it can be something to fear when you're gay, but AIDS isn't as big of a deal among gay people as it was in the 80s. Especially with preventative drugs that pretty much bring the risk down to 0%, and when used in conjunction with condoms, the risk is essentially 0.

So don't worry, even though you're gay I'm sure you won't get AIDS if you take the proper steps.

I understand most mechanical watches keep worse time than single digit seconds per day. For comparison, my quartz Q&Q SmileSolar (it's like swatch, if swatch were good) does +0.2s/d when worn daily, and +0.4s/d on the shelf.

tl;dr -- it's a privacy tool. The idea is that bulk scanning of RFID tags can produce data about the movements of individuals. I.e. you've got tags A, B, C in banknotes, D, E, F in cards (for "touchless" payments), and those being scanned at storefront X and then Y means that you were traveling on foot in this direction at that moment.

Be Afraid, be very afraid: Why smart watches will decimate the Swiss watch industry

>Most watch enthusiasts are aware of the quartz crisis, a dark period of the 70's when quartz watches became commonplace and affordable. The Swiss have never truly recovered, with far fewer brands now than during the 1960's. I foresee that a similar cataclysmic event is on the horizon, at least for most brands (I'll just say, below the market placement of Longines)

>Fast forward to 2014 and a new threat is emerging: smart watches. ..Rolex and Patek will survive, as they did the 70's, but many, if not most brands will fade into obscurity. The counterarguments against smart watches are the usual: smart watches will never replace the richness of "real" watches, mechanical watches retain value while smart watches only depreciate, smart watches are nerdy and won't appeal to the masses, smart watches aren't status symbols like real watches. And a favorite, sales have gone up since fitness bracelets have gone mainstream. These notions are wrong.

>Smart watches will depreciate, like any electronic device. Fine mechanical watches, on the other hand, tend to appreciate slightly. However we must recognize that the majority of the market is not for fine haute mechanical watches but rather watches with either quartz (Swiss or otherwise) or ETA/Seiko mechanical movements. These watches are not much better retainers of value than the average apple product.

----
>I think there's no need to explain what happened since my last post over 2 years ago. I bought an Apple Watch, got it on launch day, and had pretty much a horological meltdown. I sold all my pieces and lived happily with the Apple Watch (series 1) for over a year. I still believe that the Apple Watch is the perfect watch for most people. It's beautifully crafted and terrifyingly useful.

I am a big fan of white straps on watches, or was. The problem is that they get dirty very easily and it shows. That's a silicon strap so you can wipe the dirt away, but it's still annoying and silicon attracts dust. There's a problem in their line of reasoning: smartwatches rely on software which will inevitably go obsolete, with hardware that will disappear too. The equipment to charge the watches, the batteries inside, everything will be unusable or unserviceable in 15 years.

The traditional lever escapement can be serviced by watchmakers or even by amateurs who take the time to learn about it and get the right equipment. There are loads of parts for the modern watches, and with older ones parts can be either donated from other watches or made by a serious watchmaker from scratch. Smartwatches are like the first generation of iPads and the first generation of tablet imitators; they're all useless now.

It is the equivalent of a lower and mid grade ETA 2824 or SW200-1. Good in itself, but nothing to write home about, accuracy and durability wise. The dateless and open-hearted version of a 9015, so in theory should make for a thinner watch. A step above the Seiko NH35, what with the higher beat rate and thus smoother sweep.

The Tisell models with that movement go for about 220+ bucks which is reasonable, Im sure you could shave off 50 by buying used, at which point it is fairly great value. I probably wouldnt pay more than 300 for one unless I REALLY love the design.

It really depends on what you want.
If your budget is less than 1k then you have no choice but to go with the Tudor
, as it will be very hard/unlikely to find a DJ in that price range.
What model of Datejust depends on what the differences are.
The dj will be bigger at 36mm(doesn’t sound like a lot but the 19mm bracelets taper down way too small on the 34mm to me personally-looks almost like a women’s bracelet), Will be more accurate, White gold bezel(if you go fluted), quickset date(depending on model), hi beat movement(depending on model), and you won’t hear the rotor(I don’t care about rotor noise but it does upset some people), and some dial options.
If none of that matters to you go with the Tudor. But you should shop around on eBay, as well as chrono24, because I’ve seen lots of Tudor’s sell for less than 1k.

10 atm/bar is equal to 90 meters/295 feet.
Recreational dive limit is set to 40meters. And i think, below 55m you need special gas mixes and a certification and further training.

Not defending the obviously low quality shitter brand, that skimps out at some fucking gasket and screw down crown. the citizen is the most solid pick here. ya 46 is too big and no dont get a timex. Especially 3 handed ones like those. Their ticking is very loud, some people even have to keep them in a drawer at night. Not sure what that the case of casio is made from, but those timexs are made of plated brass and if you sweat a lot the back will start to corrode/wear away

>but Seiko seems to be a better brand. Is it?
no not really, they just focus on different things. Both companies have both quartz and mechanical but citizen is more known for their ecodrive and the bulk of seiko offerings are mechanicals.

maybe you can also consider a mechanical like this. This is the seiko snk803/805/807/809 (old seiko5 shield). They come in steel with a glass exhibition caseback so you can look at the internals, its pretty neat. Im in singapore and can get these for ~90 usd locally, they are made in malaysia so you can probably still find them cheap locally as well. Non hacking, non winding, but the 7s26 movement inside is a timetested no frills dependable one. (They are being phased out atm, the new seiko5s are much too expensive.)

Absolute. Technology just got better, machining more precise, better rubber material and production. That's why it was possible to produce cases with tighter tolerances. And the rest was done by good gaskets.
But bad brands make it look like it's something special.

Also, the rating is misleading. Most watches don't get pressure tested individually and the depth rating is often an assumption. To be safe they just make them extra safe. It's just cheaper to use good gaskets instead of pressure testing each case.

Depth resistance is a marketing figure. Generally it translates out to 5m = splashes (such as when washing hands over a sink), 20m = proof against rain (even heavy rain), 100m = proof against trivial immersion (swimming pools etc.), and 200m = actual diving up to 20 meters or something like that.

Severe inflation there over the years, as you can tell. I like the #-of-bars figure better, which is effectively meters divided by ten.

That's true. I read this post about it and some vids. It's very clever but super simple. Not overengineered crap. I read that if some swiss brand would have come up with this design, they would have marketed it like crazy.

This. I wrote it in my other posts but couldn't find this chart. The WR ratings are so unprecise. Actual diver watches get a "divers xxx m" rating.

I have one of the Timex Expeditions. I purchase one whenever I go to Africa for work and they hold up quite well. My first trip there I just got some beater adidas watch. And while I liked the look, it literally died on me and stopped working.

The Timex watches have been able to take a beating of the harsh sun and dust storms and water and sweat and seems to hold up quite well. So I recommend those if you really need something to take abuse.
