im guessing it needs actual cleaning and lubrication? The watch is more than 30 years old (1980s) now. There is no marking on the inner caseback so Im guessing it was never serviced.

if I tap on it/use a "air blower ball" on the movement it'll run but only for like ~15 mins. Im afraid to wind it even more as the 'vostok wobbly crown' is kinda fiddly, I'm not sure whats the limit and this is my 1st winding watch.

What assumptions? You are obviously mad as fuck that heritage shitters selling the finest quality and attention to detail have sawtooth finishing on their hands under a macro lens.
A company like Patek doesn't just sell a watch. You don't buy a Patek because it tells time. You buy a Patek because Patek has been making watches for like two hundred years and probably invented the wristwatch. They only make one thing and they make it to the highest possible level of quality, with 95 year old Swiss monks waking up at the crack of dawn to carefully polish and assemble and apply every part of the watch so that it is perfect. That's why you pay the big bucks, and that is not an assumption, they are selling that image as a haute horologie brand because without high standards the heritage is meaningless and their prices are just bullshit.
Then they give you a watch that has San Martin-level finishing on the hands. It's pathetic. And you know it's pathetic, and your mind is reeling. You can't even defend it because, aside from it being indefensible, you are a peabrain retard who actually knows nothing about watches and just regurgitates memes you've picked up from shill sites, like so many other watchtards who pretend they have a clue.

Every watch company has different standards. IIRC Omega, autistic bastards that they are, actually take this kind of thing into consideration and have specially calibrated lube to make watch performance more consistent even in different temperatures. I don't know if this is marketing bullshit but this is what I have heard from them.
In general low temperature can make parts like the spring contract like your balls, so your watch runs slower. The spring also expands in heat so in hot temperatures your watch can run faster.
Quartz watches are affected by temperature as well but the big concern is that if it's extremely cold and your quartz watch isn't properly insulated against it, the circuits could stop working and then your shit is dead.
Also pressure changes might cause your watch crystal to pop out, although I don't know how often that actually happens.

>> No.15429734

>>15429723

Low temperatures can fuck with both. Quartz/digitals have been known to sometimes go blank and/or freeze in places like the poles.

Mechanicals used to slow down a bit in cold weather but modern oils probably handle it well. I mean, Speedmasters can survive on the moon for gods sake so it should be fine.

But I doubt you’re traveling to those types of extremes so you should be fine.

Resurrected mushroom brand, owner is said to be a bit of a difficult chap (https://www.reddit.com/r/Watches/comments/5bsf7k/advice_timefactors_broken_o_ring_turns_into_my/)), quality is decent for the price point, watch itself is a Rolex Explorer homage with a lower-mid range miyota movement.
Consider this if you're looking for a conservatively styled mid-size automatic with a white dial under 300 euros instead:
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Universal-Geneve-Automatic-All-Steel-New-Old-Stock-Full-Set-NOS/264804473485?hash=item3da7939a8d:g:L5oAAOSwo-5eIGA5
It's nothing special but at least it's from a reputable brand, it has a swiss eta 2824-2 movement, the material, finishing and assembly quality is superior and it costs about the same. The UG should get serviced though because it's been sitting for a decade or two, that should be calculated with (and it doesn't come with a warranty).

There are some good sites out there that produce actual articles about watches rather than reprinting the latest marketing pack from some brand.

As for YT there is:
Watchfinder - great production and even though it's advertising he does get subtly snarky about certain watches.
Tim Mosso - if you simply want to be bombarded by endless numbers of watches, movement shots and encyclopedic knowledge.
Roman Sharf - if you wan no nonsense facts about the watch industry and how the business works, combined with lots of good watches on display.

Autism about mechanical watches, average movements are about +15+25s per day, it can be regulated of course, but usually if you are not an autist you will leave your watcha lone of its around the 10-15s mark. Then you have movements that are COSC (or similar) certified, they have been regulated to high standards and are about -6s/+6s per day.

It all comes down to how regulated is the movement, you can have luck and having an average movement with really good parameters and you can have a top movement bad regulated. And price does not really matter, even if you spend lets say 5k on a brand new speedy, that watch will be about +10/s per day.

That's why a lot of people can't understand the mechanical watch autism, a simple cheap quartz can tell the time better than an expensive mechanical watch that cost x700.
I have a Casio edifice which cost me 35eur and that watch gains less than 1s per year, that's ultra quality quartz territory, Citizen and other brands have those really high end quartz watches that gain just about 4-5s/ per year and they cost several thousands, and here I am with my shitty casio beater that almost reaches that precission while costing what would cost a single ling from a high end watch.

>>15430373
>almost 2/3 of all swiss brands got wiped out
It gets repeated a lot but I am yet to see the exact numbers of those allegedly "wiped out" companies. As every economist will tell you one simply can't expect brands in any industry to survive for more than 2 or 3 generations, making their demise an organic process. What you have is a few separate cases of bankruptcy forged into the lie of the "quartz crisis" by the powers that be.
Many people -including a few earnest swiss ones, some of the relatives and descendants of the alleged victims of the quartz crisis themselves- have tried to unveil the lie, only to earn ridicule and permanent bans on watch enthusiast (more like lie enthusiast!) forums.

It was simpler than that. Back then people needed watches, there was literally no other alternative for portable timekeeping, and the only technology was mechanical. Whilst they weren't expensive they certainly weren't cheap either but people had no other choice. Then dirt cheap quartz came along and dominated the market. The Swiss watch industry survived by becoming high-end luxury goods while the low end became dominated by quartz.

A similar thing happened when the Apple watch came out. It has decimated the cheap end of the market and brands like Fossil have lost billions. However despite the Apple watch's success the mechanical watch market has been largely unaffected.

This was literally me less than a month ago. My gf wanted to purchase a new watch, I decided to do some research. All I knew about watches was that they use quartz to tell the time. I figured literally every watch nowadays used quartz. Boy was I surprised when I filtered watches by luxury companies by their "quartz" lines and would only turn up like 2 results. I literally thought that all Rolex and Patek and high tier watches were quartz. Why the fuck would you think otherwise?

In very few other industries, especially ones that deal with technology, do you see the most expensive items rejecting the modern approach.

So yes, if you know nothing about watches, you think that quartz are in all of them. As I did up until a couple weeks ago.

My chinkshit ST16 does -8s/d on the reg. A lucky NH35 I have does -0.5s/d when worn and kept crown up overnight. My Boctok does +7s/d on the average (+4 on wrist, +12 on table).

I understand most mechanical watches keep worse time than single digit seconds per day. For comparison, my quartz Q&Q SmileSolar (it's like swatch, if swatch were good) does +0.2s/d when worn daily, and +0.4s/d on the shelf.
