Silly ideas like these might give others ideas how to better do it. I found some lanyards that have the same lug width as some of my watches. If i get bored, i'd make a nato strap out of it. Lanyards are often thinner and don't make the watch as bulky as natos. Only need needle and thread in a nice color. Stitching is braindead easy.

If i had a gucci fake lanyard, i'd do a gucci nato as a party gag.

It's going to be hard as fuck to make that a watch strap by hand. Especially a NATO strap.

And that's only if you're lucky and have it the exact width.

You'll need to burn the ends, hot knife or hot awl the holes for the buckle etc and you can't really hand sew nylon effectively

You can try to weld it but it'll look like shit.

Welding plastic is basically just using heat to press together and doesn't involve skill like Tig welding

>> No.15408538

So what's the deal with the alligator/croc leather seen in high end watches? Is it simply the luxury of having an exotic animal hide as a strap? Or is there something else to it?

I know a little bit about leather, but not enough about exotic hides. I like good leather boots and shoes, and the most durable kind are made with full grain cow leather. Bags from top designers will often be made with Top grain leather to remove any markings that may be present on full grain leather. But even within fashion houses, they'll sometimes have croc or snake skin leather goods. And they're expensive as fuck. But this price really just comes with how rare the material is (to my knowledge, at least).

So is it the same for watches? Is it simply an extra layer of luxury? Or is there something about croc leather that is better? Perhaps its longevity, or its ability to stretch and repel moisture?

I think it's just being exotic and having an interesting natural pattern/texture. Other ones are ostrich, lizard and shark.
I personally like light brown ostrich, Perhaps most commonly used on the JLC Reverso.
The rough and uneven grain and color, almost like buffalo but softer, and with the characteristic dots makes it dressed down causal but elegant.

Alligator/croc can be economically produced in SEA slaughterhouse farms on an industrial scale then marketed to the prestige-hungry masses as a luxury exotic leather product.
If you want actual exotic luxury leather you can occasionally find vintage nos pre-embargo seal and elephant bands from the 1970's on ebay et. al, more durable and superior to pretty much anything produced today at around 50-100 dollars. Arguably it's also a more ethical choice as it provides no incentives to present day reptile farms whose practices tend to be sickening. Now, asian elephant bands are also available from Thai, Vietnamese, etc. producers, those are unethical and inferior modern products, please don't buy from them and stick to vintage. Old markings are usually phoque veritable/seal/pinseal for seal and elephant/african elephant/s.a. elephant/éléphant veritable for elephant.

That's fair and I would definitely do that. Great idea, anon. I still have this weird hang-up over purchasing seal or elephant because of how unethical I know the trade is regarding poaching and other things. But I may feel better knowing it's vintage... maybe. If the quality is better that is also incentive for me.

However, I'm not sure the argument "it provides no incentives to present day reptile farms" is particularly true. If all the vintage stuff sells, clearly there is a market for it.

You mean the Stowa? I'd spent over a thousand for the ETA movement. I spent €340 for the Laco with a Miyota which may or may not be hackable. It's not amazing but it's not bad either as it's pretty accurate. Everywhere I looked people were saying the lume looked great, so I donno about that.

I'm legit baffled why people think this. Basically all the agent does is ask you what you want in a property, find something they think fits your description and show it to you. If you like it they start the sale, if not they keep looking. How is that comparable to a car salesman? I have been fucked over twice from sleazy used car salesmen, one who sold me a car without a title so I couldn't register it because "it was in the mail, don't worry" and another that lied about a bunch of shit and damaged my car when I took it in

It's just another startup that is disrupting the billion dollar watch industry. If you are tired chosing between disposable fast-fashion watches and overpriced luxury watches. So what they did was make a truly unique minimalist design and cut out the middleman. Their revolutionary business model involves getting the watch directly to costumers and cutting out the middleman. As a result the markup is lower, and customers are able to afford luxury.

I would say the Breitling, I own one myself and the ability to operate all the functions just through a normal looking crown really is great, makes the whole watch seem quite a bit more elegant than the Omega with its buttons everywhere in my opinion. It's a great all around sports watch and is my go-to when I don't want to put thought into which watch I'm going to wear because of the high accuracy quartz movement and it's light weight.

Get off the beaten track and consider something non-Swiss. You don't have to go full Eastern Bloc and grab a Poljot De Luxe or a GuB Q1 though. Consider the French, a Chronometre Lip or a T18, an L. Leroy if one comes up and you're willing to afford it. Consider the West Germans, a Junghans Chronometer, a Kurtz Glashütter Tradition (still a well kept secret) or a Pforzheim-era Lange.

Yeah, the closest I've had are a few atomic Citizens. It'll also be, by a pretty substantial margin, the most expensive watch I've ever owned, and in another situation I'd be getting an auto for my first $3k+ watch but these ana-digis are justifiable to me as tools for flying.

I definitely like the form factor and case design of the Breitling, it's just the bracelet and the style of the digital display that really win out on the Omega. I'll have to go try them on at some point once this whole virus situation is resolved, fortunately (or unfortunately) my training's also been slowed down by it so it'll be a while until I'm actually looking to buy one.

Quick question for my fellow /fa/ther lovers:
My dad has a semi big birthday coming up soon and is about to retire. I want to give him a watch as a present because he like them but hasn't been able to invest a lot of time into watches as hobby. Usually wears a pretty boring Nomos.

My budget would allow matching (steel) JLC Reverso Duos for both of us or a Rolex Cellini for just him. What do you think would be cooler? He's not really into sports watches but I'm open for alternatives. He has huge wrists but doesn't really care about how small his watches look.

>replacing battery and/or strap
A monkey can do that.
>or maybe even fucking with a broken automatic movement to get it working) cleaning it up,
A watch movement is rather intricate and require some skill and knowledge if you want to disassemble and clean it properly. Damaged part can be hard or impossible to replace.
But it might be something you end up enjoy doing, who knows.

But it seems like people sell watches with dead batteries or busted straps for cheap instead of replacing them

What's the point of having a digitalized analog clock on top if there's a digital display of the time right underneath it? It's just wasted space, I don't like the design.

srs q:

do nice digital watches exist? Just looking for essentially an upgraded version of the f91w etc that can take a beating, be worn while hiking, in lakes/shower, etc

I like some of the Timex Ironman designs, they are good cheap beater watches if you don't like Casio/G-shock designs. I wear one at work.

Its just function over form, the watch can go 300m but without the helium escape value the crystal pops out on the way up...... whats the point if having a 300m diver then.

They could make it a 200m diver and not have it or put a auto one in but now its part of the seamaster I don't think omega will ever change it at this stage.

I don't care it they have it or not, would need an auto in then, like tudor or deep-sea.

>> No.15413816

>>15413808
Was there really no way for them to integrate it into the case smoothly rather than having it jutting out like that?

>> No.15413832

>>15413816
Yea they probably could, it was most likely a cost saving thing in the 90's and now they are stuck with it. Some say Omega likes to have a manual over a auto (like in the pelagos) as it is more reliable. Who knows.
