>Why do I want a timepiece to be as accurate as possible instead of a half-assed approximation of real world events for convenience sake on something I'm spending thousands of dollars on?

Because when I am spending thousands of dollars on a watch that is meant to keep accurate time and measurements I want that to hold true throughout the mechanism instead of companies (that herald themselves as high quality) take half-assed approximations of real world events simply for convenience sake. The answer was in the rhetorical question, anon.

It's inaccurate and sloppy.

Do you not care about accuracy in a timepiece? Especially when the cost is tens of thousands of dollars?

but are you actually using your expensive ass knife? I have to imagine there's a reluctance to using it since it actually degrades it, and then you'd need to sharpen it, etc.. With a watch it's not like every time you check the hour you take a bit of the case off.

I guess for under 1k I would use it because it would probably last a while. I've used chef knives pushing that price and I understand the appeal

Depends.

I have a ~$300 chef knife and you bet your fucking ass I use all the damn time. I purchased it specifically to use it because I know what I would be capable of doing with it.

And yes, you can do more with a better knife that it more expensive (to a point, obviously). At $300 for a quality workhorse chef knife, you'll get years of good use.

You can go to a knife thread on /ck/ and see people talking about super expensive japanese knives that they'll never use or are for a specific purpose that they'll never encounter. But you can also get advice on workhorse chef's knives that look and feel great, will last a long time, and will perform at a very high degree of quality.

Obviously I'm leaving out quite a few details, but am happy to explain further.

focus on something ultra reliable and serviceable.

ultra reliable traits:

strong shock resistance
at least some anti magnetic traits
decent water resistance, at least 100m
sapphire crystal
decent / quality steel, 904L, etc
chronometre rating

serviceability:
parts should be accessible to non-authorized dealers
authorized dealers should charge an average rate ($500-$1000)
the movement/calibre with wide adoption (will provide decades worth of parts)

remember chronographs are more costly to service than movements with no complications.

>accuracy/model semantics

Fair point. I would like my moonphase watch to accurately model the moon's orbit. I still feel like this isn't such a tall task to desire in a watch, nor is it ridiculous of me to bring it up. It's just that I can't seem to find brands and models that do this.

>accuracy wouldn't be my primary concern, craftsmanship would
One could argue that those are closely interwove. Not to mention that what I'm asking for in a watch is literally the equivalent of a watch's hands going counter-clockwise and asking for them to go in the correct direction. It may still be accurate, and you can still use it to tell the time, and the craftsmanship on the timepiece is excellent, but it's stupid. In fact, my request is even more valid because we just "made up" which direction the hands around a clock can spin. Whereas the moon actually has a defined orbit.
