They (middle class to upper class Chinese) are a huge market that is majority nouveau riche. Any business that cares about profits would try to capitalize on that and cater to them. The roots of the problem are the money grubbing companies that push out the tacky products and the mentality of the Chinese people that lead to showing off wealth and overall materialism.

I think in reality the percentage of people in china who are "hypebeasts" or are people who buy whatever is the most expensive and flashy is about the same as any other country. But the population size and the fact that only the rich and the smart/lucky get to study and live abroad skews how westerners get to perceive them. Also doesn't help that western countries already don't like China.

I am ABC and I find the majority of my mainland Chinese classmates and to be cringey with their fashion choices. But every now and then I find a chill and aesthetically dressed one. Hopefully given time mainlanders will get a better sense of fashion.
