I think they're discontinued, not sure though, so mine came from Ebay. Expect to pay somewhere between 1950USD and 3000, depending on condition, box and papers, etc. I went for one from Japan that had no box and papers but was in good condition with pics of the movement. I took it to my watchmaker as soon as it arrived so he could give it a clean bill of health, so essentially it's fine. I'm not a collector; eventually I plan to send it to Omega for a full overhaul. Since they replace nearly every damn thing, I'll be getting a 'new' watch back from them, so it's worth it if you factor in the cost when you purchase.

The subdials are sunk, and the day/month are even lower. Here's a better pic without glare, but closer to the watch so the size looks big. I still haven't done a lume shot yet.

The condition is excellent except for the nick on the outside of the ring (it's pretty deep) at 110 on the tachymeter. But, I can live with that because the rest of the watch is pristine. Bless the Japanese...I've never had a problem getting watches from there. They always seem to describe the watches accurately.

Yes, yes it is. But remember this is the Speedy Mark 40; the standard Speedy has a profile like a bowler cap. There are few watches that look good from the side, and fewer in this price category. You have to understand; this type of Speedy is literally the least expensive with the most complications; it's an excellent budget watch. Chronograph, automatic winding, hacking seconds, day, month, date, and 24 hour counter. The standard moonwatch begins at around 4000USD, but you can find models without box and papers for less, and it does far less (i.e. it's still cam operated, but mechanical wind and only has a chronograph as its complication).

The Mark 40 flies under the radar because it's 39mm, it comes in a variety of formats and colours, and it uses a generic 7751 modified by Omega. Famous people don't wear it, it's not featured in movies, and it's not glamorous.

You can get a version of it that has a moonphase as well, as the movement is built to accomodate this. But that only is in the Mark 40 versions that have steel polished hands (with the numerical date indicator being a crescent moon instead of the airplane hand that you find in the Mark 4.5 series of Speedies).

I've wanted this watch since I was a kid, but only now am I in the economic position to afford it without blinking. That's what watches I think need to be in terms of budgeting; you have to be able to spend the money on it as if you were spending money on a Big Mac. If you can't, then you can't really afford it without pain.

One other thing about second-hand watches though: box and papers only matter if you plan on reselling the watch or holding it for the hope of it increasing in value. My Seamaster has the full set, but it's more a curiosity than anything else. This one is missing both, and it doesn't matter to me at all. Box and Papers seems to help with 'authenticity', but one can buy the box and get documentation straight from Omega afterwards if need be.

So do I; that's why I went with this model instead of the other versions that use a crescent moon that 'cups' the number. The Speedy went through several versions after the Pro; the Mark series to 4, and then the two automatics. But this is the only one that to me still looks like a Speedy (i.e. case shape, protected pushers and crown, black face, speedy style hands) and yet is better in terms of what it can do and clearly evolved from the Mark series (subdial wedge hands, airplane date indicator). It's the ultimate evolution before the changeover to co-axial. There's a part of me that would be interested if they simply enlarged the face to a 42mm proportion; my old eyes do take longer to focus on the date wheels. But that's another story.

Given that the 7750 series movements can be regulated into COSC specs, this could have been a 'super' watch in my view, but since my watchmaker can do that for me, I don't complain. And for whatever reason, it winds a lot faster than the 1120 Seamaster I have.

Well, I say this because there are lots of Anons here who are looking for budget options, and I get that and understand it because I was too back when I was younger. For me, the Seagull 1963 was my first mechanical chronograph, and I still love it, but the price of a service on that watch is the same price as the watch...which means that it's essentially use it until it breaks. There comes a point where we get into better financial positions, and then we can consider better quality that lasts longer. The quality can definitely be felt in terms of difference, but we have to be serious about our financial future first.

Can I get a QRD on the Omega line? I hear the Aqua Terra is extremely antimagnetic, but then someone said the master coaxial movement in general is, I have no idea, was never interested in Omegas apart from their WW2 era pieces.

The only one I really really liked the looks of is the james bond Planet Ocean, no other appealed to me, except maybe now for the AT.

The Co-Axial thing is also not a meme. It's pretty interesting. It's a complex system created by English watchmaker George Daniels who was working on it for decades and then he took it to Rolex because he thought they would appreciate it since it was awesome. They told him to get fucked and then Omega swooped in. It basically makes your watch able to go twice as long without servicing and increases accuracy.
That movement is very impressive in many ways.

Obviously it can only done by Omega themselves because who knows. Only after I bought it did all the "knowers" come out of the woods and tell me that it's shit and I should stay away from it. Two of my friends had them seize completely for no apperant reason. One of them got the repair paid for by Omega, the other I don't know.
Mine wasn't their very latest master coaxial movment though, so maybe things have gotten better since then.

No reason, really, I guess, except Im looking for a never-take-off watch, and mucking about on a laptop, the speakers are right there under my wrist bone, so I wanted to shield a memechanical movement as much as possible.
That is also why my other, and more likely option, is a quartz. I have zero issues with ticking seconds, I love the fact that the only thing needing adjusting is the date (if applicable) and lightness. Also an enormous saving on the watch itself and servicing costs. Still very expensive, if I look at quartz Omegas, older Rollies, or IWC, almost noone does an intriguing quartz that also looks the part and doesnt cost an arm and a leg, the aforementioned are still expensive for a quartz, but alas. Not a fan of Seikos.

Early Co-axials (the 25xx series) had known problems and flaws because Omega tried to integrate the new escapement into the existing 2824 platform. The Master Chronometer Coaxials are known to be no problem so far....so far. Also the 85xx series is also seemingly reliable.

But I keep coming back because I am enthusiastic about watches, and I've seen watches here that I never even knew existed and learned about them. The glory days are long gone though (I think everyone moved to a discord), but you'll see occasional old posters coming by. Sometimes good discussions can be had too, about the state of the watch industry, 'is watch buying considered a "hobby"', and so forth.

I am curious though: until you posted the pic, I thought 'Bagelsport' was a meme and not an actual watch. Is it just a replica of the Milgauss, or something more? And why the hell was it called 'Bagelsport'?

Quite a few posters bought one when some new stock became available on AliExpress back in 2015, plus £20 for an automatic watch was ridiculously cheap for a bit of fun (though when mine arrived it was broken, I had to mess with the movement to get it working properly), I think they quickly rose in price though not long afterwards.
It's just a straight forward copy of a Milgauss, even has the plain caseback and a signed crown with the dodgy coronet. I think there were other Bagels too like a Nautilus copy.

The four center hands can make the dial look balanced, or horrifically unbalanced, and because I'm still doing timing tests on it I don't want to stop the watch or reset the date or anything just yet for the sole purpose of taking pics.
Sorry to hear about being ripped off; I've never bought a watch like this through eBay before, so I was prepared to have problems. The people I bought it from had a brick-and-mortar shop in Japan (confirmed by Google streetview), with phone number and everything...so I assumed they were legit enough to make the deal. That said, the price was surprisingly low, and given just how many of these were appearing at the same time, either they got a Yakuza shipment out of a damaged truck or the economy has hit the Japanese far worse than is known and they're all getting rid of watches. Right now you can get a basic Speedy, no box or papers, for around 2600USD buy it now...that's not bad, and there are lots of them, all coming from Japan. I had half a mind to buy one, even though they're not the Cal. 321 I'm saving for, because the price is just too good for a watch that should realistically be that price or less. The markup on modern 861/1861 Speedies is ridiculous and not at all indicative of the cost of production or cost of the actual technology inside. You do get a beautiful presentation box and shit with the new ones though...I'd guess that's where some of the thousands go. Sorry to hear about the Tudor...

It's a good question. For me I was simply buying a more expensive one every time, until now I just save for specific ones (still more expensive every time). I've got at least 3 or 4 digitals, all from when I was a kid. The last analog quartz was pic related which I got last year; they stopped making it, so I had to get it from Japan and I'd always wanted one since I saw one in an airport shop over a decade ago. The Mechanicals for me have been a different story; went from Omega to Panerai to Rolex (briefly) back to Omega, with random shit in between (the 1963 Seagull for pure design and nostalgia). What I've found is that there are certain designs and aesthetic directions that are pleasing to my eyes and work well on my wrist..and others that just don't.

As for the numbers...having more than one watch is for me an issue of purpose and function. The Nighthawk will be for when I'm at the range or on a roller coaster. The Mark 40 is my daily watch for work, and the Seamaster will now only be for when I'm diving and when I'm in a tux (which is surprisingly more often than one would think).

By the numbers, I could sell everything and get my grail, or sell everything and get the Day-Date Rolex of my choice. But that's no fun to me. I'll be able to afford those things in the future if I still want them, but there are other priorities as well and other things that are more important as financial investments. Watches are about what make us happy when we need the time, and mechanical ones are in my view more interesting because they have quirks of the mechanism that quartz watches don't always manifest.

It's easy, and even if you scratch the underside of the lug no one will see it except watchmakers. Furthermore, if you service the watch you can get the scratches polished out (unless it's a deep one). I do it all the time. Do it in a well lit place though the first time so that if the springbar boings out unexpectedly you can find it on the carpet or floor. Which Omega? Also I don't have a tool either; I use the mini-screwdriver from my Victorinox.

My guess is the publicity is meant to be just that. It runs well, no complaints. They really don't advertise the amagnetism which I feel is a really important thing for some people.

I tried on the globemaster as well as the full-sized AT and both were too big. The globemaster was one of the first watches I've tried on that looks better when it's not being worn. The new aqua terras look amazing, especially pic related in my opinion, but just too big for me.
I've taken it below the water, not deep yet. Bought it in anticipation of moving to southern california, and as soon as I get here everything is closed. go figure. right now it's more of an at-home desk diver, and I'm okay with keeping it that way honestly. doubt I'll ever be 600m underwater

Surprisingly not, but it's not the stripes that bother me at all. I've never liked the minute hand with the arrow that should be on the hour hand. I just...hate it. It makes the dial look off balance all the time, but this was a problem with the older ATs as well. I came really close to buying one last time I was in Japan. They were cheap when I was there too, plenty of nice ones under 2k. I ended up getting my Ball Engineer instead - the price was really good, I really liked the watch (and still do), I felt more comfortable buying a brand new watch, and wasn't sure I'd be happy with a Speedy that wasn't a Professional - but in hindsight sometimes I wish I'd bought the Omega instead just to have a watch from a well-known company that I wouldn't have to explain and justify to people.

As an actual pilot I really wish they'd do one as clean as the Gravitymaster there but with the digital sub-display of the Mudmaster. The one complication that's actually useful to a pilot is an easy to read second time zone (for Zulu Time/UTC) and the teeny tiny analog displays some watches have are useless. The Ball is a great watch; I've always been interested in the tritium tube stuff. That being said, I have never been a fan of their general aesthetic lines, and I prefer their pocket watches. I have a hunch that the popularity of the Mark 40 in Japan is because it's 39mm, and the Japanese tend to have small wrists so it looks better in proportion on them. It depends Anon. As much as I love the general aesthetic direction Omega has taken, ever since the late 90s they've been using every trick in the book to boost their recommended price into a range that could potentially threaten Rolex. There was a time when Omega and Oris were almost at parity for the watches that had ETA movements, and for a long time Omega was a working-man's watch that wasn't as expensive as a Rolex but not necessarily less reliable. Even in the 60's, my Dad was telling me the other day that at least in the shops, Rolex was 'considered the best, but also the most expensive, and was a status symbol the way that Omega, Longines and others were not'. That's probably one of the reasons he got his Seamaster around 68 or 69, and he still wears it happily to this day because he's always been a 'one-and-done' kinda guy. But there were definitely alternatives that were as beautiful or as mechanically sound. Zenith would have been a great option back then too...hell, even their pocketwatches were beating the shit out of Hamilton at the time.

Even the modern Longines...there are a few that use excellent ETA or Valjoux movements and are literally one-and-done watches. The cases might look awful after a few years of wear, but there's nothing wrong with the actual performance of the movement or ease of servicing. For a long time I had wavered between the two actually, because I like what 1990-2010 Longines was doing. Things change of course, but I think that generation could be also put into the basket.

Omega today in my view still can be a one-and-done if you like their aesthetic and will pay the price for the Master Chronometer movements (plus the inevitable problem of having them only serviced by Omega and not by an independent). If I liked the Globemaster, for instance, I could easily see myself wearing that for the rest of my life. But the price Anon...the modern prices are the problem.

You know, I never had much of an interest in Ball before I saw mine in person either, and I still don't like most of their models. This watch stood out to me as soon as I saw it, and in a store full of Rolex, Omega, Grand Seiko, etc. I think that says something about it. It doesn't really come across in photographs but in person it comes together really well and the dial in particular is really cool, it's 3D machined and painted in an interesting silvery white that really makes it stand out in person. The only thing I can compare it to is a Grand Seiko Snowflake, and it's not the same type of dial or as fancy but it grabs your attention the way the Snowflake's does.

I think I'd still make the same decision, especially because I got such a good deal on mine (I ended up paying like $1250 for a watch that was $2600 at US dealers), but at some point I want an Omega as well. Maybe next time I go over there.

Keep in mind that early generation Panerais were using ETA, Valjoux, etc. for their movements, and the pic you posted would not have had a display back. There are lots of ugly as shit movements with no finishing that perform fine. The issue you point out (limited edition costing thousands with no finishing in the movement) is a marketing issue, not a quality issue inherent to the performance of the timepiece.

You always have to ask yourself what the value of a watch actually is, and even though it's obvious, sometimes we forget. What are we paying for? (Anons can add to this list, of course):

1) Research and Design of movement
>If it's a generic movement by ETA et al then discard
2) R+D of watch casing and presentation
3) Manufacture (including materials used)
4) Assembly and Regulation
5) Testing

6) Brand markup.

Those I can think of off the top of my head. With the Panerai you are concerned about, 1 and 2 are negligible, 3, 4 and 5 apply to all of their watches, but 6 is the key. That's where the markup moons, but humans love to hear that something is in limited supply because if they get it, someone else doesn't. It plays to the biological need to survive and hoard and be better than one's neighbor or have a greater chance to survive with more food in the wild.

I think it’s a stelita. Some kind of open weave Perlon strap, but looks a bit like woven (p)leather.
It’s probably not the original strap, the watch is quite old and has a lot of “patina”, so might be some 60s thing not made anYmore. My grandfather should know (or maybe even my great grandfather, the history of that watch is bit murky) but I can’t ask him anymore.

Awesome....the lume never disappoints on Balls. I remember seeing them in the same situation as you; in a store full of Rolex, Omega, (but no GS), Oris, Breitling, and Ball. The Balls definitely stood out due to the lume tubes and general design, but what threw me was that it felt as if the only selling point was the lume. The movements at the time were generic, the layout of the dial and general construction of the watch was in my eyes Oris-tier, and since the nice lady behind the counter wouldn't say anything more about them other than the lume tubes...well, I never gave them much more thought. Probably should have tried one on though, but in those days I never knew how important that actually was. As I say, if the watch has given you good service and made you happy, then that's all that matters.

Yeah, I kind of had them pegged as "the tritium tube company" and "those guys who make BMW watches" and hadn't given them much thought. As I say I still think the majority of their watches are pretty generic too. It's just this one model that really stands out, and it seems to be a pretty damn rare one, I went through the whole Ball owners thread on WUS a while back and there was literally ONE guy who had this model in a thread with over 1k posts.

Thanks, it was a mess when I bought it for cheap, a real gamble and a small miracle that the dial was so clean when the crystal looked like it had been in a rock tumbler. Since then I've replaced the crystal and the retaining bezel with NOS and I had it serviced two years ago. It did come with the original bracelet but one of the end links needs to be fixed and I've never gotten round to it, not least because the bracelet is pretty ugly in my eyes. Since the watch has no seconds hand and the chrono needs to be left running to reduce wear on the vertical clutch I just use the chrono seconds as a seconds hand.

The first generation (i.e. 25xx series) was problematic to some, but I have no idea if one of those movements would perform fine if serviced. The 85xx was reputed to have fixed the problems and be more reliable...but I can't say for sure if a 25xx series should simply be thrown out the window. Ask your trusty watchmaker if it's worth it...maybe he can do something to help. The rest of the watch would be up to spec.

They fit very nice on small wrists, they're really not that big. You might not use it as often as you like because they're kind of a pain to use. A dbc611 is easier to use.
