Help me decide on a one and done watch please. I'm about to sell almost all my shitters and medium-shitters to buy a yellow gold Rolex.
Question is only: which one. A used 116718 "Roulette Dial" GMT Master or a new 116618 Submariner. Both pretty much the same price.
I dive about once or twice a year and plan on keeping a single Seiko shitter for that purpose so I don't really need the depth rating of the Sub.

I own the 36 mm version of that, about to sell it though. DJ is a fine watch, would be a good candidate for a main watch. Looks a bit weird on my wrist sadly, mainly because of the thin bracelet. Plus the two tone thing makes me look even older.

I don't like all-gold watches myself but an all-gold watch is a statement of luxury and confidence. it's heavy and bright, a clear statement.
two-tone watches are just as flashy because of the high contrast but it feels without confidence. it's not trying to fly under the radar like a steel watch, it wants attention, but it lacks the commitment of a completely gold watch. it wants to walk in both worlds. it's confused. like a faggot.

If you care for a little history.. these are called second-setting watches, ordered by the RAF in 1940. They were made right before hacking movements became common, and solve the problem of not being able to synchronize your watch to the second with other time standards, e.g. a formation of airplanes. You rotate the bezel so the second hand points to 60 at the moment of a time sync signal, then set the rest of the watch according to the new seconds reference on the bezel. Precise to-the-second time was needed for aerial navigation and the chronometer movements of the time could not withstand the vibration and magnetism issues of an aircraft. This was a crude but efficient solution used from around 1937-42 until hacking movements replaced them, but of course the the concept caught on again in the 50s with dive watches.

I called him about a replacement crystal once and he actually told me the guy that made them died of a heart attack. Couldn't make this up if I wanted to. Good watch, though and the new ones have a sapphire crystal. Don't listen to the anons whining about crazy Eddie. Yes he's an asshole.
