15372641

A lot of people talk about "COSC specs" when they talk about chronometers. In fact, COSC (a Swiss testing organization) does not set the chronometer specs; they are set by ISO standard 3159, and are adopted globally (including by chronometer testing institutions in France and Germany, for instance).

Chronometer specs have varied over time. In the 1960s, Swiss testing organizations (B.O.s) had their own chronometer standards (including standards for "especially good results"). In the 70s, the ISO standards came into force instead and the COSC was formed to replace the varied B.O.s. Modern chronometer specs are actually quite wide, and go far beyond the "-4/+6 spd" soundbite a lot of people refer to. The -4/+6 standard is for the average of ten days of testing in five static positions at one static temperature, but the standard requires several other criteria be met, particularly in terms of variance between positions and temperature.

To demonstrate how wide the standards truly are, this is an example of test results that would allow a modern watch to be branded a Chronometer under the current ISO3159 specs.

Well for most of it's lifetime the Nautilus was one of Patek's least popular models and could be bought well below retail price even within the last 10 years. Tastes change, dress watches are no longer popular and the craze is for steel watches, sport watches, Genta and blue dials. The 5711 ticks every single box and it's by Patek. The Nautilus was the cheap casual watch for Patek owners but that is no longer true, now that niche is filled by the Aquanaut.
