>BRITISH GQ actually published a new article yesterday about Seagull and other quality chinese movements while also taking shots at the Swiss
----
>Murkier still, although far from illegal, is the business of exports of Chinese movements to traditional watchmaking countries. For a watch to carry the all-important words “Swiss Made” on its dial, only 60 per cent of its value has to be added in Switzerland. Given everything is cheaper to produce in the Middle Kingdom than anywhere running on CET, large portions of a Swiss-made watch – whether the case, crown or pins that hold a strap in place – can therefore come from anywhere in the world.

>Who’s doing this? Don’t expect anyone to tell you. Talk to people who’ve visited the Chinese factories boxing up parts for the Swiss and they’ll go all 1984 on you.

>As some Swiss companies appear to have recognised – as indeed have many in tech, Apple not least among them – “made in China” doesn’t necessarily mean mediocre. Many of these mechanical movements are every bit as serviceable as those made by Swiss giants such as ETA or Sellita. Insiders say the best in China are using the same machinery and materials as the Swiss.

well well well

>Let’s establish a precedent: China can and does give a good mechanical watch. Maybe not Patek Philippe or Vacheron Constantin good, but in the industrial and commercial heartlands of Beijing, Shenzhen, Tianjin and Hangzhou, some of the world’s biggest watch companies build all manner of mechanical movements, from base hand-wound calibres through to high-end complications.

>Insiders say the best in China are using the same machinery and materials as the Swiss. The reason the end product is cheaper, they say, is because salaries and land purchase are cheaper in China. Basic economics not quality, in other words.

Take this strictly as anecdotal, but 2824-2 and SW200-1 are basically the same thing. Both of them will perform about the same, at any rate Id go for a Top variant (chrono if you can afford it), and the Sellita at that, seeing as ETA are pozzed by Swatch.
2892-2 and SW300-1 are the same again, but thinner, so they might be more suitable if you are looking for a slim dress piece, or a carriage for complications without going all hockey puck thick. Ive heard good things about 2894-2, being easier to service than a 7750 in the way that a 7750 has to be entirely taken apart, a 2894-2 is a 2892 with a separate chronograph module on top (which has to be swapped whole if something breaks, but I wouldnt be so sure about that).
SW500 and 7750 are the same league again.
While I said they are "basically the same", Sellita changed just enough that the parts are not interchangeable with ETA.

Currently the average consumer thinks, why should I pay $12,000 for a grand Seiko or $500,000 for a credit when I can get the same watch for $350 at JCPenney?

That and Seiko fucks up and markets kinetic watches the same as mechanical so the average Joe looks at a credor and is like what the fuck....the $350 kinetic keeps better time and neither take batteries (except kinetic watches actually have capacitors that act like batteries)

Buy a ring that you think she'll like but stick to a conservative choice and spend your budget, don't be cheap, I assume she'll say yes because if you have any doubts you shouldn't be asking in the first place.
If it turns out she's not keen about the ring you can return the ring and choose a more suitable choice together, don't let it bother you if your original choice was not liked, she's the one who has to wear the ring after all.
Luckily my fiancé liked my choice of a plain boring (or classic) solitaire diamond on white gold. The only problem I had was the sizing, I sized her finger when she was asleep but still got the wrong size.

the jewelery market is like 90% salesman trickery. Every piece of jewelry that you get in a big box store passes through like 10++ middlemen who add their own $cut on top of the cost

diamonds are now so devalued (thanks to china flooding the market) that even casio can put real ones in their $40 shitters

I've no idea, it's entirely dependent on your financial circumstances. I got a 18k white gold band with a diamond that was less than a carat, I was cheap because I knew I had to fulfill an obligation to buy an engagement ring whilst resenting the fact that I was the one who had buy it with my own money. It's a symbol to me, that's all, what it represents is infinitely more important to me than what it actually is. We've not chosen wedding bands yet but I'm tempted to go for something long lasting yet basic.

As mentioned towards the end of the last thread, I've decided to get this Amphibia 2416b as a first real watch since about the age of 10. Generally I don't have a problem telling the time myself as I'm usually pretty good at predicting it anyway plus phone. The main use I see for this is style and signalling to older folks in a responsible young chap.
Anyway the straps on these are shit so need to find something nice to go with this aquamarine green theme, preferably non-metalic as allergy to nickel and pretty lightweight as I haven't got the chunkiest of wrist to work with here.
UK fag so anticipating a month or two wait and also a likely £20 import duty charge ontop of the £62 plus postage from Mockba.
A nicer bezel is a longer term goal too.

Thank you guys aswell, I very rarely come over to this chan as it's usually when sniffing about clothes, shoes and stuff, usually go for quality>quantity. Whenever I have come in here though from 2014 or so these Ruskie pieces always caught my eye. So thanks for turning my attention to them, comrades.

The straps are shit, but work and fit the style of the watch, so you don't *need* a new one. And it's stainless steel (assuming you bought a new one, and not some soviet era ebay find), so you should be fine. And the 420 case is quite small, so unless you're a turbowristlet, you could simply get a cheap nato strap in whatever color you want. Or a Perlon. A bit harder to find, but not that hard. The gf wears my blue scuba dude on a blue perlon and it looks fantastic.

Apart from the lumed ceramic bezel it wasn't even that exotic and as I said before, Omega were shitting out an endless amount of limited editions including other Snoopy watches.

Looking for a 500€ watch.
Type is "anything I can wear every day".
Probably 38mm since that seems to be the fa choice nowadays.

Analog or digital?
Mechanical or quartz?
Leather, rubber or metal bracelet?

When exactly did you sell it?? That model has been 20k for a few years afaik. It shot up to 30k in the last 6 months or so after an article in one of the more popular watch sites.

Analog.
Either is fine. Maybe a slight advantage to quartz since it seems less costly to just change out a battery every now and then.
Preferably leather but metal is acceptable.

Mostly I just want something great looking that can be worn daily in most/all situations and isn't prone to breaking/costly to fix.

How does an average person make a conscious decision to get these $5000 watches i know not everyone is rich and just enthusiasts but i cant make sense of it

6k just a few years ago? what do you mean by few? they were going for like $12k at AD’s like 8 years ago.

if you did purchase it for that much you got an amazing deal and absolutely fucked up.

i agree with the rest though, outside of the reference to the legendary snoopy award, the quality of the watch itself was OKAY.

Sold it for 12k in late 2018, market was pretty stable at 15k iirc around that that time.

People who buy 5k watches aren't average. They are enthusiasts and enthusiasts make time/money for their interests.

area for a circle is calculated by pi x (r^2)
area of a 40mm case is like ~1256.636
area of a 44mm case is like ~1520.530
that's like a 21% increase in area. quite substantial

They are average if you live in a first work country and have a job.

What's to understand? It's a luxury piece of jewellery that serves a useful purpose and can be perceived as a status symbol. Especially for men it's probably the only piece of jewellery they can wear and not look like a fag. Those people that buy watches for a love of horology or technical reasons are a tiny, tiny minority.

Then I'd say get a boring but reliable Citizen BM8530-11XE or BJ6501-01E.
Both simple but dead reliable eco drive watches that go with everything. A bit bigger than expected though.
Otherwise there's plenty of cheap entry level mechanicals from Orient, Seiko or even Steinhart at this price point.

Those look exceedingly ugly imo.
