Not him, but I looked into replacing the crystal on my shitter and it seemed like a massive hassle if I could even find a replacement for cheap. If it was a major model and you could just swap in a modern sapphire from China, I'd do it.

These days you can get diamond polishing paste for next to nothing, so I'll try that out first. Might even buff the case to a mirror finish if it's any good.

Thoughts on one of these on a 6.5in wrist?

>> No.15349768

>>15349760
it's big but not as big as it seems because IIRC it's 12mm thick and the way the lugs are designed it hugs the wrist tightly. on a 6.5 inch wrist, it's the minimum for being able to pull it off, but you can pull it off. keep in mind the tuna is a popular design with seiko engineers and they're all tiny japanese. if they can do it, you can do it unless you literally look like some gangly shaved chicken and you're 5 feet tall

It's a pretty easy job if your watch is a Seiko, I'd say 9/10 models still have new crystals available from places like Cousins UK for only a few pounds, even cheaper if you're willing to use a generic copy like I did.
For more obscure watches it's still possible to do for cheap but you've really got to hope you only need a round crystal with no attached tension rings.

>Are NATO straps on Aliexpress good quality?
Depends.
Last thread some anon posted a link to some premium straps and I almost ordered them, but then I figured 10 credits for a watch strap from china is a bit much, when I can get a quickdraw for climbing that's rated to 2 tons of static strenght and that I trust with my life for less than half as much. Made in Germany to boot.
But they do appear to be really good.
On the other side, I got pic related a while ago for like 1.2 credits a piece, and they work, but I've now got one in daily use for 3 weeks (actuall tool-watch as a tool use, though), and it's already starting to fray at the edges and the holes are getting out of shape.
It certainly will keep going for many more months and for the price it's still quite good, but at this price, it doesn't have to be very good to be good for the price.
Would reccomend this price bracket for a try-out, or for some weird colors you only wear like 3 times a year with some specific outfit.
Now I just need to find some 3-6 credits middle ground of stuff that's actually good, but not overpriced.
Hit me up with some links, if you know such a thing!
Oh, and I need some natos with some colorful print that matches my Hawaii shirts!

I found this watch in an old toolbox in my dead father’s basement. It’s a quartz watch probably from sometime in the 70s. I don’t think it had been touched for 30 years at least. It’s pretty beat up but actually still works. Has a sweeping second hand and no quick set date. Kind of cool looking.

Understandable, but that why I'd rather that mechanical be dressier rather than sporty. I like the look better and for less than the price of a service I could get a gshock. I suppose it's one nice mech watch and one quartz beater instead of one watch so I'm cheating a little, but I still think it's still in the spirit of the question. Honestly, I think it's great that you do everything with your seamaster. It might give me cause to reconsider.

Why aren’t there more brands like Seiko? Is it really that difficult to design an in-house auto movement and couple it with watch faces and aesthetics that have soul, without charging thousands for the privilege? Why can Seiko make so many amazing <$500 mechanical watches but nobody else even comes close? You might be able to find a service manual online if you're lucky but the construction of digital modules is usually straightforward. I'm pretty clumsy with small parts but I've no problem with digital watches, just take them apart and clean all the various parts with something like isopropyl, the only real dangers are losing parts and cracking the lcd, which takes a lot of force to do.

loctite or threadlocker. It is like glue you put on screws. It is widely used in many applications. It allows screws to stay in place without needed to tighten them with excessive force. Blue is the most common color, indicated it can be easily removed.

>and competing against their own vintage designs available online for half to a a twentieth of the price they were new.
Huh?
But most vintage ones are way more expensive than what they used to cost, even taking inflation into account.
But how they get to
>OK, lets make a reissue, but more ugly and more expensive!
>Yeah, that's a great idea!
that is beyond my understanding.
Like, just make the exact same watch that everyone wants to have, maybe give it a more modern and better movement, if available and stamp -reissue- on the back, so no one can sell it as vintage and price it competitively and everyone is happy.
But only the chinese rip…err homages are doing that. So if you want a good looking watch, you either buy the real deal for a huge price and with all the issues vintage might or might not have, or you buy chinese. I don't see where the reissues come into the equation.
Plus, you can even get funky colors, if that's your thing (pic related)

Suggest a watch for me
Budget: $2000 to $3500
Dress Watch
Automatic
Stainless steel casing, Roman Numerals, minimalist white face, second hand.
The Sinn 1746 Classic would be absolutely perfect, if not for theack of a second hand. Because of my job, I need a second hand on my watch, so unfortunately the Sinn is a non-starter.
I make good money and want a nice watch that will last and look nice for many years to come and can be fixed if damaged, resold reasonably easily, etc. I'm completely new to watches but am reasonably /fa/ and dress on mostly Ann D, Dries, and Rick Owens. I'm fine with spending money, but I'd rather spend more for a quality product than a bit less on a product where corners were cut.

the point is that affordable is relative. you can get a boctok amphibia for less than 100 dollars shipped but this would still be a luxury purchase to somebody in, say, ecuador. 300 dollars is a lot for a watch to the average person, but entry level for the watch enthusiast. 2000 dollars is exorbitant to even some people who like watches, but for those who routinely buy 10k+ watches it's affordable. and a 10k watch is an impulse buy to millionaires who prefer buying... richard milles

>but NATO straps actually have nothing to do with the NATO treaty, it was just a stocking number from the earliest examples of them (british)
Yes but (and I just read this online) the stock number is a NATO stock number which was developed by NATO, so the strap is named after something named after NATO.

Reminder that VINTAGE watches is a cheap hobbz since you can resell all you buy (if you know what to buy) for the same money or a profit. Only costs are buying straps.
