15313863 No.15313863 [Reply] [Original]

My skin was always very clear but now, at age 20, I’m starting to get acne. I’m guessing it was mostly anxiety induced by the consequences of the lockdown. I’m highly skeptical of things like creams because I’ve seen people use them for years and never get results. Maybe I just need to get a better diet and sleep schedule because both of those are fucked for me rn. So do creams work? Why does acne happen and how do I stop it? It doesn’t help that I can’t stop picking at it. Also post any other skin care tips.

Okay if any of you zoomers want clear skin but don't know how to into skincare here is an easy start:
Go get
-a bottle of Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser
-a tub of Cerave Moisturizing Cream
These are ultra basic products that are inexpensive, work with most skin types, and are available at all drug stores/groceries.
Then apply them twice a day (morning and night). Maintaining a routine is the hard part.
After you've got a routine down long enough to gauge how your skin reacts do more research into other steps/products to add (sunscreen will probably be your best addition).

Hot tip: if you suffer from even a slight case of acne, don't fall for the Cerave meme, regardless of your skin type. Both cleansers (foaming and hydrating) completely stripped my skin and made any acne treatment burn like fucking crazy, and the moisturizer lotion, which is allegedly "light", clogged my pores and gave me raging fucking angry whiteheads all over my chin and corners of mouth, worse than any acne I've ever had including high school when my hormones were wacky, ive never had skin as horrible as i did with cerave products.

get on the acne.org routine and maybe insert a thing or two from The Ordinary in there. I do the acne org routine but I use TO Marine Hyaluronics before the moisturizer because it collects moisture from the air AND contains a tiny amount of salicylic acid for a touch extra acne-killing power

I had clear skin until I was 20 then started getting acne too. For 2 years I tried acne regiments and dermatologist treatments including antibiotics but nothing helped. I said screw it and just started using CeraVe cleanser/facial moisturizer every morning and night, then my skin cleared up within months. I’ve had clear skin from 23-26 with only mild outbreaks

There's no long-term concern. It breaks many people out but it doesn't for others. If it works for you then that's really good. I've actually heard quite negative things about its use in hair products though. Something to do with the fact that it coats the hair shaft and doesn't let moisture in so it can make it more dry. But hair is pretty complicated and I don't know that much about it so I couldn't say. I know things that are good for one hair type may be bad for another.

Birth control pills are often prescribed specifically to help with acne and not just as a contraceptive. I was put on them at 15 (a very long time before I became sexually active) just for acne. That said they can fuck up your skin as well and I think it's pretty retarded to mess with your endocrine system like that, especially as a teenager. I would be interested to find out if teenagers using BC earlier is resulting in higher rates of acne. But teenage boys usually have it a lot worse than girls.

>>15319251
It's not a dumb question. I think you would know or find out fast enough if you have sensitive skin because it gets pretty uncomfortable. I don't have sensitive but I have had sensitized skin which I think feels the same.
Usually will feel itchy, hot, burning, or stinging after using a product that is too harsh for it. It might look red, have little red dots or an unexplained rash, or be flaky.

Dry skin makes less oil so less acne prone (can still get acne though). It will feel tight after washing it. And it shows fine lines more. Smaller pores. I think your hair will get greasy more slowly as well. And you won't have shiny forehead or cheeks.
If you don't know your skin type I think you can't go far wrong if you just treat it as if it is sensitive and dry. This is totally anecdotal and I don't know how it works for other people, but I have oily skin and ever since I just started treating it as if it was dry I've had a crazy huge improvement (like from chronic acne until I was in my mid-twenties to having like 3 pimples total in five years). That could also easily be related to natural aging and hormones shit though so YMMV and I also massively improved my diet at the same time.

>You mean the Amazon marketplace or direct from Amazon?
Buying off Amazon at all. The same products are kept in the same bins in the warehouse, so you can get fakes mixed in with real product and it doesn't matter if the seller you are buying from is very legit because you're not receiving a product sent directly by them. I think there are cases where the seller ships directly to you but I don't know much about that.
I don't know much about ebay so I couldn't say too much. I know it doesn't work the same way as Amazon because the seller is sending you the product directly. I know there are legit sellers on ebay. But from what I've seen those are linked to a legit store and their products are the same price.
To me it seems like if a product is so much cheaper than retail value that it would be actually beneficial for you to buy it, then that's a big concern. You can also use your own judgement, if a product isn't that popular it's less likely to be counterfeit.
In my opinion when it comes to skincare I think you should only buy from an authorized retailer. I have a lot of money to blow on skincare and my whole routine is still pretty cheap, because I think basic ass pharmacy brands are often the best. Anything that's legitimately tried and tested has been around for ages and is usually cheap and accessible.
And in the end I don't think you saved any money by buying off ebay so if I were you I would go to my local Boots or whatever. Cerave and the ordinary are both available there and are great brands, especially if price is a concern. They do delivery if that's an issue.

Why is that? I would have thought it is best to minimize contact of surfactants with skin. (As in, you should be massaging it in while it's on your face, and then wash off when finished. Rather than leaving it sit. I would do my oil cleanser for a full minute but my second cleanser like 10 seconds). Depends on what caused them and what they are. If they just appeared rather than you always having them then most commonly they would be age spots However these are really associated with people who are middle aged+. If you are younger you should worry a lot about how much unprotected sun exposure you are getting.
But it could also be one of a few other things which you should really go to a dermatologist or at least a doctor for (it could be something that effects your general health like hormones or diabetes). Besides the fact that you need to find out what caused them, most effective treatments for them need to be overseen by a professional anyway so you might as well.
If you refuse to see a doctor at the absolute minimum protect them from sun exposure.

This isn't true. By what mechanism do you think the skin "grows tolerance" to a product? The only way what you're saying would be true is if you were using sensitizing ingredients like essential oils, which your skin could develop an allergy to due to repeated exposure. If you don't wash your hands prior to washing your face you might be retarded. And using a washcloth is both bad for your skin and also disgusting, unless you wash it every single time you use it. Which, if you don't know how to wash your hands I'm guessing you don't. Even if the washcloth was clean, physical exfoliation is still generally not a good idea.

You don't need expensive products to have a good skincare routine. But I can see why if you would think that if you've never done any research into skincare. Most ingredients that are worthwhile have been around forever and are cheap and accessible. I have several times the budget I actually spend to blow on skincare and I don't because what I have works. And in general the more boring and bland the product is the better. But enjoy your meme brands and skincare myths that can be disproven with a few seconds of googling. I'm glad they work for you.

the ordinary is a perfect example of a meme brand. ive never tried it. and i doubt i will. bc they derive their ingredients from the cheapest sources and that is not always the best route for quality.

I hate to sound prissy but i have learned a long time ago - when it comes to hair, skin, and make-up....Id rather spend a few extra bucks and have quality.

again i had very bad skin it was embarrassing and ruining my self esteem. now i can leave the house without make-up.

Everyone's skin is different and will react differently to different products. The idea that spending more money will always get you a better quality product is incorrect. I've seen absolute shit at every price point. And for example Asian skincare is usually very high quality at a comparatively very low price point.
I think in a skincare thread like this, most people asking questions don't even have a basic routine. It's going to make a lot more . It makes a lot more sense to me to recommend them stuff that's cheaper, accessible, high quality, and bland. Recommending expensive stuff that has a lot of superfluous ingredients is only going to cause unnecessary issues if the product doesn't work for them (they won't be able to figure out if a specific ingredient is causing them trouble, they won't be able to figure out if a specific ingredient is what is working very well, they will waste money, the vast majority of people have to try out loads of products before finding a routine they like, more likely to have a bad reaction than with basic unfragranced pharmacy stuff). If someone had tried brands like lrp and cerave and didn't like them I would be happier to recommend them something else then.

And for my routine it isn't that I don't want to spend more money. I used to only use sk-ii and sulwashoo which probably tells you something about how much money I am willing to spend. I had acne for a very long time so I get being willing to spend anything. I just think it isn't always necessary and the products I think are the by far the most likely to help with acne or any specific skin issue are usually pharmacy stuff. Especially considering that any actually proven effective medicated treatment for acne is going to be quite harsh and usually needs a bland routine to be tolerable.

I tried various dermatological treatments but none of them worked, what eventually got rid of it was a better diet. I cut out dairy products almost completely, heavily reduced fat consumption and generally avoided greasy food. Also started drinking a lot more water. The effects were instantly noticeable, within weeks my back was less swollen and the redness was starting to fade, until it eventually cleared up completely after about 2 years. Left only minor scarring considering how bad it was.

I'm not saying that dermatological treatments don't work and that you shouldn't try them, but they didn't work in my case.

ok - so things can get a little complicating obviously...esp when using strong products.

i definitely recommend retinol.
did more for me than BHA

you can use retinol and BHA just not same day

IE if you used bha
(paulas choice is on sale for $8 rn btw) i kinda stopped using strong toners bc retinol and peel masks are plenty for me..i used ph balancing toners

overdoing skincare treatment is noo bueno

AND ALL THESE PEOPLE RECOMMENDING STRONG SA FACE WASHES...

maybe it works for them but it didnt for me

I use a PH balancing/very gentle cleansers
(bc you dont want to over do shit) drying our your skin is just as bad bc then you overproduce oils (clogging up your shit causing break outs)

also i recommend a toner and or essence - which is to help neutralize&moisten skin ESP IF YOU USED SOME CRAZY ANTI ACNE CLEANSER

everyone's skin is so different. it took me 2 years and thousands of dollars to find what works...

i know this is too much and too messy atm
i might put up my ruitine..with when/why/how (and b4 and afters)

all i can say is LISTEN TO YOUR SKIN
yes i have 30 different products - I DONT USE THEM DAILY...I use 3-8 per session, depending on whats going on with skin.

Avoid any stress in your daily life. If needed, try meditation (I can't vouch for it personally), but definitely cut out any negative interactions you have. Getting more sleep always helps.
Worse comes to worse, see a dermatologist. Be honest, give them your routine, and see what prescriptions they suggest. It might take a few trials and errors, but you might find the best fit for you.

Your skin is probably dry and irritated from spending more time indoors. The answer is a double cleanse.

At night:
Albolene
Cerave hydrating cleanser
Night moisturizer (I use cetaphil for red skin but the regular cerave one is good, too)

Day:
Cerave day moisturizer with 30spf

I don’t recommend washing your face twice. Just put on the day cream.

depends on how deep they are
microdermabrasion and chemical peels you can do at home
(these will take the top layer of skin off....and obv have something to calm the effects...and products to help the skin regenerate, to make process faster.)

i didnt have a lot of crater like scars - but the ones i did have - i got rid of with strong resurfacing masks. this got rid of the discoloration too. i got results when i started using quality products. which can be kinda pricey. idk your budget.
but the people that say you can get the same quality of ingredients at drugs stored are just not in the position to give advice.

but for the more serious and deep scars- you need to see a specialist that can do the procedures like lazers and microneedling

start with strong peels
dont overdo it! esp if youre doing microdermabrasion
(i used to do each one every 3 days)
you cant overwhelm your skin though

you need to tone it and settle the PH
use very gentle cleanser
calming stuff
SPF
and dont let it get dry

CICA has been a savior for me - it helps heal
and there are all sorts of products with it

anyways this post was a mess and im too lazy to read/fix it

sorry

Believe whatever you like about price and quality, but the products you are recommending have sensitizing ingredients in them that aren't suitable for sensitive skin. If someone is having an allergic reaction to a wash off product they have seriously sensitive skin and need hypoallergenic products. The calendula cleanser you are recommending has a lot of ingredients which are harmful for sensitive skin and it also is full of allergens. Why would you recommend that? Price shouldn't be your only reference point for if something is good or not, you can also read the ingredients.

I don't know why you're calling me scum. I just pointed out why your recommendation was poor. I didn't mean to personally offend you.
Hypoallergenic means it is unlikely to cause an allergic reaction (what that poster was specifically asking for). There isn't exactly a solid definition on that but at the least a hypoallergenic product won't contain common allergens. Yes, khiels have been around for a long time and have good products. But the cleanser you recommended has a lot of allergens in it and is much harsher than the cleanser that the poster said gave them an allergic reaction (all hada labo cleansers I know of are relatively mild/non-sensitizing compared to that cleanser).
I'm like you in that I don't need skincare advice. I haven't been to this board in like ten years and I'm only here because of quarantine boredom. I just wanted to share what I've learned after about ten years of having persistent acne and now having gone five years without even a pimple. I think it would be great if you also shared your knowledge, bu it isn't so useful if your only reference point for finding something good is it's price. I don't have any problem with expensive products like you're implying. Like I already said, I've seen good and bad at every price point. Sometimes paying more does get you a better product. Sometimes it doesn't. If someone's had an allergic reaction to a face wash, I personally wouldn't recommend them a much harsher face wash that has much more allergens in it. But I'm sure having an alternative viewpoint is always valuable.

AHA should only be used at night time because your skin will be more sensitive to the sun, also use sunscreen if you go out during the day.

Yeah it's retarded long and that's after making a concerted effort to cut down. However I combine the toner, snail gel, and eucerin into one step pretty much (moisturizing step). It takes me like 2 minutes in the morning and maybe 5 minutes max at night (not counting wait times in which I go do other shit before applying suncream in the AM and tret in the PM). In PM the double cleanse + moisturize + tret + occlusive are non-negotiable. In AM the moisturize + SPF are non-negotiable. So I can't cut it down more at the moment unless I find a product that can replace at least two out of the toner/snail gel/basic moisturizer. I'm open to suggestions though.

Please see a dermatologist. There are several options available to you. I've not dealt with pitted scarring personally but I have some knowledge. Besides tret, vitamin c, and at home chemical peels (e.g. the ordinary 30% one) I am not aware of any effective at-home treatments.

>#1 wear good suncream every day (probably mineral if you are getting professional scar treatments. Don't quote me on that though)
>Professional resurfacing procedures (laser, chemical peeling, dermabrasion)
>Microneedling (please see a professional)
>Tretinoin (not retinol)
>Vitamin C
>Silicone sheets/gel (on scars that are newer)
>Scar surgery
>Fillers (I think usually these might be temporary, 18months. I think some are permanent)

>A growing body of evidence underlines the role of insulin resistance with increased insulin/IGF‐1 signalling in the pathogenesis of acne. IGF‐1 is the key hormonal mediator regulating adreno‐gonadal androgen synthesis, amplifying cutaneous androgen activity and stimulating proliferation of sebaceous follicle. Endocrine diseases or nutritional influences leading to increased insulin and IGF‐1 serum levels are frequently associated with acne (Table 1). IGF‐1 mediates the action of pituitary GH during puberty, the induction of androgen production and stimulation of peripheral androgen metabolism. Milk consumption and hyperglycaemic diets can induce insulin and IGF‐1‐mediated PI3K/Akt‐activation inducing sebaceous lipogenesis, sebocyte and keratinocyte proliferation, which can aggravate acne.

So what do I do if I really like drinking milk? I only drink milk and water. Am I just supposed to stop?
My skin is pretty good apart from blackheads but trying the the charcoal facewash thing for that.

If your skin is pretty good and the milk isn't giving you acne you don't need to stop drinking it. I drink a lot of milk and don't get any acne from it. Everyone's skin is different.
What charcoal facewash are you using? Salyclic acid is the best treatment for blackheads. I would also recommend double cleansing with an oil/balm cleanser and then a gentle second cleanser.

I agree with what he says about bar soap (it sucks shit and shouldn’t go near your face). I don’t think the cleanser he recommends is very good. A cleanser with those ingredients I wouldn’t be comfortable leaving on my face for very long like he suggests (it’s pretty harsh, and I think it poses a danger of stripping your lipid barrier, and it has irritating ingredients which I don’t think should be left on wet skin for an extended period of time). If it works for you that’s good though and I would continue. If it isn’t working I would recommend an oil/balm first cleanser and a gentle second cleanser. (You could use that charcoal wash as a second cleanser, I would wash it off pretty quickly though). I agree with what he said about moisturising every day though and I like the moisturiser he recommends, a lot of people swear by it.

Also buying skincare on Amazon is not necessarily a great idea. Because of the way they fulfil their orders. The same stock is kept in the same bins in the warehouse (or something like that), so regardless if you are buying from a legit seller or not you can get a fake as all the stock is stored together. Cerave facial moisturising cream is extremely popular so maybe it is something that is faked. I’m not an expert. But they sell it in any pharmacy so that’s where I would be comfortable buying it from.

Also your blackheads might be sebaceous filaments. I think this guide was already posted in the thread, it’s good: https://fiftyshadesofsnail.com/2015/03/28/how-to-shrink-pores-temporarily-plus-3-pore-myths/.. And if they are blackheads this method will help a lot anyway.

Salicylic acid will help the most with blackheads I think. Adapalene would help a lot as well.

Usually, skin overproduced oil because there's not enough water in your skin, aka dehydrated skin. Moisturizers helps with that, just a matter of finding one that works for you and make sure your cleanser isn't too stripping. You can also look into hydrating toners if you don't want to use creams.

There is more than one person making recommendations in this thread. I would personally recommend to avoid fragrance but it's worse in certain products than in others. For example in a product with alcohol content, the alcohol will allow the fragrance to penetrate much deeper and be far more irritating. In a cleanser a fragrance isn't as irritating because you wash it off immediately. I wouldn't recommend any product with fragrance usually, but the biore is very popular and if it works for you skin then go ahead.

Hello fellow bros,
Anyone know why I get a much smoother shave when waiting 2+ days between shaving? It's much closer and less irritating if I wait. And is that normal? This happens with cartridge and safety razors, and every type of cream, foam or oil.

I'd like to shave more often but my skin doesn't seem to be able to handle it. If I wait the two days however, I can shave with zero irritation.

I suspect this might be the main culprit behind all my skin issues, but with a delay of 3-4 days after consumption. I don't get gas at all so I'm not lactose intolerant and it's worse with cheese.
