Anyway. Is the Flightmaster as dank as it looks, and what about what the Youtube shills say? Is the crystal actually a little bit domed, per its reflection?

it would not surprise me if the price of the flightmaster goes up in the future. i don’t see it going down if the prices on other seikos are anything to go by.

i’ve seen them in person and they look great. not as big on the wrist as you would expect.

i don’t think so, mine is 41mm and it’s already considered small.

Looks nice, Frederique constant is poor man's JLC brand, but as far I know they are legit and make nice watches even a bit above Longines level. The rotor seemos to be really nice looking.

Checked it on chrono24 and there are a couple of them used at 1700eur, so the price sounds right.

But only one thing, apparently is a really big watch,54 mm lug to lug and classy watches looks less nice when they look very big on the wrist, this watch is not made for wristlets.

What up hustlers.

Leftmost Seiko SPB079j I copped at the advice of an anon here, and absolutely love it.

Middle Tissot, graduation gift from dad

Rightmost Seiko, My granddad's watch he got for 30 years service at a factory. This one is cheap but has some meaning behind it. Has his name engraved on the back. My dad got out of that environment and did real well career wise so that watch in some ways reminds me of his sacrifices, as well as where we got to as a family. It's grounding but also inspiring to me.

I just bought this on Amazon.
I’ve been into the whole Nixon skate watch thing for a while now.
It’s got ana-digi and you can turn the digital off and I feel like I could legitimately get away with this at like an office or formal event like a dinner.

More than circumference,is about wrist shape.Check yours and measure from side to side, a general rule is lugs must not surpass your wrist width. So to being able to pull that watch, you would need a wrist wider than 54mm, probably at least 58-60mm (and it would fall into the oversized watch trend) since its lugs are curved and the watch will look a bit better than straight lugs on a small wrist. On a blog to watch dot com,, there is a peking to paris review and it says the reviewer has a 6,5inch wrist and that the watch looks big but not silly on him.

But as I said, it's mostly about wrist shape, mine is about 6,4inch and its 60mm wide, so I can wear watches up to 54mm lug to lug if their lug shape is good. And the most important thing, you wear the watch beause you like it, not because it must be liked by others, noboy is gonna shame you if your watch is a bit bigger unles you encounter a watch snob, in that case he will shame everything that covers the oversized watch trend (like wearing a 40mm+ watch is oversized territory and forbidden on a gentleman)

I that's partially it, but there's more to it than that. Seiko is one of the few brands where there is a lineup at virtually every price point, from digital shitter up to Grand Seiko. If you like the design aesthetic, then you never have to go outside the company.

The <300$ automatic mechanicals are very popular here as an entry-level for that technology, and given that they're not offensive aesthetically, it's a way of being 'in the game' without spending stupid money or taking a risk on something from China.

There's a weird deadzone for watches between 300 - 900$ where the only things that look good are vintage, so if someone is buying new, Seiko is the way to go. Once you get past 900, you get into Lacos and that area, and then you're just below mid-tier.

I think you're simplifying it too much. Consider Seagull's tourbillon, which can be had for around 500USD depending on where you get it. In terms of function, it does what basic tourbillons from JLC, Omega, and others do; the escapement rotates once a minute, and...that's about it.

The finishing is poor, the aesthetic quality is questionable, but as a piece of technology, it is like a Seagull with a moonphase, or with a chronograph. If you put one of these next to a tourbillon by JLC, one is obviously more beautiful than the other, and I say that as an objective reality. Furthermore, both are 'real' from your definitions or concerns, yet one is obviously more desirable than another.

Mechanical watches do not exist solely for the technology that they contain; they combine the tech with finishing and beautification of the components, a watch face and hands that tell time in a way that attracts or inspires the eyes, a case that protects the movement (sometimes to a water depth that is allowable for diving), and a winding crown that is comfortable for the feel.

Fakes miss the details that turn a single element from being really nice to astounding. When you add up enough of those elements that are not great, you get something that is average.

Yes, there are markups due to the branding and name. Yes, a brand new watch will lose about 14% or so of its value as soon as you walk out the door of any of these boutiques. Yes, it's consumerism, and in many cases it's for an increase of social status. But that's because mechanical watches are luxury items: they're not necessary for modern life. In for a penny, in for a pound: spending 300 on a watch is really no different from spending 3000, or 30,000. The question is, does it hurt you financially, do you get enjoyment out of the thing, and does owning it stop you from looking at watches in the same category?

>cars, watches, food, mattresses, women...it's all the same.

There are Anons here who know more about them than I do, and they were kind enough to provide me with reading material regarding the history, aesthetic choices and designs, their supremacy just before the quartz revolution compared to the Swiss mechanicals, etc. I'm sure if you ask, someone will have the links (this was about a year ago).

I'm sold on their tech (SpringDrive), and on their business motivations. Their aesthetic has never spoken to me, and the closest thing that appeals is one of those Credors with a porcelain dial. One of my work colleagues has a Springdrive (power reserve model, don't know what it's called), and it looks fucking amazing in person (due to the precision of the finishing); naturally, it looks like shit on my wrist, so it further cemented in my mind that it's not a watch that I could ever enjoy.

There's only one boutique in my city, and I haven't been to it yet. I planned to go, but Corona got in the way. There's no way to tell Anon until you put it on your wrist; only then can you know if something truly isn't for you or if it's just not for you in your head.

For me now, I'm just saving until I get the watches I truly want. I'm waiting on one now from Japan (delayed due to Coronashit); if it fits and my watchmaker gives it the go-ahead, I'll post it here (and I'm prepared for the shellacking I'm going to inevitably get). I don't care though; having a watch and talking about the real-world problems or joys of wearing it is at least better than speculating about something from afar.

If you can, just try on Seikos every chance, even if they're not a model you'd think of in a pic. You never know what will work on your wrist until it's there.

Jlc is actually one of the most engineering focused companies in the game. A jlc tourbillon actually has very novel construction when compared side by side with conventional tourbillons. They may ultimately serve to fulfill the same purpose, but the design is markedly different. It's not just about finishing when it comes to high end watches. If it was pre richemont minerva would be the most desirable movements that exist, but they aren't.

Believe me Anon, I'm making the comparison 'in favor' of the real thing, not to criticize it. My point is that the Anon before was comparing fakes and authentics as if the tech of telling time was the only factor that mattered, but there's far more to it than that.

JLC has historically provided movements for lots of upper companies too (I had no idea they provided movements for Vacheron until a few years back)...JLC movements are awesome in research and design.

Have a good eve Anons.

Most Chinese movements are based on old swiss designs now in the public domain. Based on to the point of being unaltered. Even Sea Gull and Peacock movements are this way. Im not talking down on them. They're good movements, easy to service and can keep time well. But this is part of the reason they are so cheap. They don't have to recoup the cost of research other companies do on pieces made in exclusively small numbers. Illegitimate ones like fake Chinese rolexes usually have movements based on reverse engineering a specific rolex in house movement. The are usually done to a certain extent lazy and this takes some time so they are usually behind current production ones. As they are usually based off one specific example they can also be off if small changes or variations occur over the genuine movements run. Sorry I wasn't meaning to come off as contradictory, I just enjoy talking about these things as I don't have anyone to talk to irl about this.
