A false tongue, or kiltie.
Traditional decoration on some styles of workboot. AFAIK the only practical purpose it serves is if you beat the absolute shit out of your boots to the point that even the tongue gets tattered and worn, the kiltie will wear out first and can be replaced.

Full blowout on the sidewalls of the boots. Were fantastic for the beginning of the season but after 2 months stitching around the boots came loose. After blowing out, nails from the sole started coming through the bottom into my heel. I maintain my gear fine, I just don't believe that whites are as nice as they had been in the past. The vibram sole separated from the upper part of the sole, causing endless amounts of embers between my feet and leather towards the end of the season. I guess I didn't need to come on so hard about them being shitty, you're right. But I do think they aren't as nice and Nicks or JKs.

But below the surface: blue collar jobs, should you not injure yourself or be injured, leave you healthier mentally and phyisically. And that's no joke either, just talk to business people to see what it's like lol.
But the other thing is that since everyone's been wanting themselves a white collar job, the market is pretty unbalanced. Trades are no question, a great way to have meaningful work, and work that pays too, which is pretty much the point.

look into usfs, dnr, fish and wildlife, or blm engine or handcrews for wildfire. You'll work 6 months doing fire. Which is pretty fun if that's your kind of shit. The other 6 months (if they offer it) is fuels reduction and tree work. Think about it like the conservation corps. You'll do a lot of thinning and brushing, burn-piles, field/ditch burning. Essentially things to get ready for the next fire season. If you live somewhere hot/dry it shouldn't be too hard to find a job in it. You'll make great friends and get a lot of experience.

>>15306710
I make about 30 an hour. I do work for the state though, not the feds. Easier to get pay raises. The anon above telling you that you'll make 10 an hour with the feds isn't completely wrong, but if you go up in rank, you'll make significantly more money. It also depends on what kind of crew that you're on. If you're on a type 2 hand crew, then yeah, you'll probably make between 10-20 an hour depending on the state you're in. If you're a squad leader of some sorts, then you can make more. Also, you do make hazard pay as well as a shit load of overtime. I typically walk away with around 35-40k a season, and make around 20k for the rest of the year. So it's not like I'm super well off. But I live in a nice part of the state and am very happy with my work.
>>15306758
Yes, typically you work for 6 months depending on the area you're in. My friends in california and the southwest sometimes work for an entire year due to fires. But where I live, we work 6 months of fire and 6 months of fuels work. Depending on the agency they'll have you do an assortment of things. I know some friends on a shot crew in a national park that do recreational work for the park during the offseason. BLM and fish and wildlife will have you do all sorts of cool shit during the off season as well. Some people are turned off from the seasonal work, but if you like working hard and digging holes all day then I think you should go for it.

>>15307006
Yeah the southeast is an interesting place. We've had some people come from the Florida DNR for engine boss training, but I couldn't tell you too much about fire down there. If you're worried about housing or benefits you should apply to hand crews on the west coast. Generally they have bunk houses that you live in for the fire season and if you do state or feds you get benefits. Also, you'll most likely have to do those classes again unless you have the certificates. I know that southern alps has a lot of fire crews for the USFS. Just keep looking and I'm sure you'll find something.

wildland firefighting is a lifestyle. if you want to be the kind of person who does that sort of shit, you basically shut yourself out of ever living near a population centre, having a wife or family, or having any other type of job. your skillset will be camping, hiking, running a chainsaw, and packing a fat lip of dip all the time. you are a complete degenerate with no education or skills and is trading your body for money, the smart and lucky will become managers of other retards and eventually an incident commander if you go back to school

if you want to start, just apply for gs3/4 fire technician jobs next year in the winter/early spring when they fly all of them on usajobs

>>15305860
the paradise fire was different because it was so highly publicised, PG&E was getting torn apart in the public court, and it was near a major population centre (chico).
your average 4chan dipshit 19 year old is not going to get on a cleanup crew making $30 an hour with no experience or connections
if you somehow make it onto a contract crew, you will be making your boss a lot of money while you toil in a burn scar. if that sounds like something you want to do, call up your local PG&E vegetation management contractor and work your way up, but it will take you years of minimum wage drudgery in the middle of nowhere humping tanoak for 10 hours a day while your peers get degrees and actual jobs

I would highly recommend it, especially if you want to get into the natural resources
it's similar to the military, in that you will have a lot of retards who are enlisted, and fewer people who are "officers"
the uneducated can toil long enough to get decent paying jobs somewhere, but you will fucking toil hard and long. I'm talking like 15 years of being a firefighter before you become a captain
I graduated with a degree in forestry and interviewed for a captain position right away. I saved 11 years of work to get there, and got a fuck and party my way through school. I also got to learn a fucking shitload more about the theory and science behind the work, and have a safety net to fall back on.
If I wanted to move somewhere and be more of an urbanite, I could work for a nonprofit or what have you. The guy who has been a wildland firefighter for 5 years couldn't, all he can do it keep being a firefighter and living our of his truck while camping in fucking willow creek or angel's camp or yreka or wherever, just random little spits of land with nothing going on

a lot of people enjoy going the working route, but I am glad that I went to school. you have to decide for yourself if you even want to do shit like this, because I'm still out in the field all way climbing up mountains and getting lit up by hornets and crawling through poison oak and trying not to get stuck on waterbars. but I also know how the trees will regenerate after a variable retention, and how quickly we can expect to return for further treatment, and which trees are going to do better where, and how to analyse our cruise data, and how to think of costing in the field when selecting trees to harvest, etc., because that's the shit you learn in the classroom instead of around a campfire drinking coors and crewing grizzly longcut wintergreen (cope is for cityslickers)
