Reminder that quartz is superior in every way as a time keeping tool. Your only argument for mechanical is muh soul of cogs and springs. Shut the fuck up, your watch has a movement made in the hundred thousands by some low-wage worker in some asian shithole all the same. Unless you have a bespoke or actually hand-made shit. The only reason high-end watch makers rarely use quartz is because they keep looking for answers to questions noone asked just for the sake of vanity and trying to make centuries-old tech keep up with much much simpler electronics (antimagnetism, shock resistance, complications). Expensive and complicated watches are flex jewelry at the most.

Mine wasn't, but obviously you didn't read it. The technology costs money, and the Chinese tend to prove just how much it's actually worth, at least, at a base level. Case in point: Seagull produces the cheapest tourbillon on the planet (you can get one for around 500 USD). Yes, the actual watch casings and faces are shit and ugly, but you'll still have the engineering and design of a tourbillon.

Compare that with normal luxury manufacturers and their tourbillons; they tend to start around 26k USD and up.

Same thing with the Seagull 1963 which is memed here a lot but which I own and enjoy. It's a column wheel mechanical chronograph, a slight modification and evolution of the Venus 175 cal.; today you can get one for around 250USD, but a column wheel chronograph usually starts at around 5 or 6K in luxury brands.

Luxury watches are a simple issue if you let them be that way. Any watch you pay more than 4$ for is a luxury, so throw that term out the window. The next things you pay for are in this order:
1) Technology
2) Name Brand
3) Exclusivity

It's that simple. 1 can be enjoyed by enthusiasts, but in general society 2 and 3 are the most important in terms of the valuation of someone's status based on their watch (and thus spending wealth).

If you're like me, then you don't give a shit about the social ramifications because no one else around you does. But if you live and work in a society where the type of suit you wear or the company that makes your glasses can be a talking point, then it's a different story.

>wear what you love. If you don't, you're missing out.

>>15297787
The epitome of a dinner watch. That is all.

>>15297806
There is an argument to be made regarding 'art for art's sake'. With mechanical watches, the combination comes from the engineering, R+D of the movement, precision, accuracy, and execution of all the elements. When a watchmaker achieves this, it's an act of creation.

The main concerns revolved around a few things:
1) extreme changes of temperature, including dials and hands that might absorb solar radiation and warp.
2) G-forces during liftoff as well as jolts and other sudden bangs.
3) 1 atm changes of pressure for EVA and other things. This also includes the rapid changes of humidity.
4) the maintenance of a reasonable timekeeping.

The Speedy was apparently tested along with chronographs from other companies, including Rolex. Watches were bought (unknown to the companies) at local watch stores and brought in for testing. Lots of hilarious things ensued (watches lost their crystals, hands warped stopping the functions, etc.), and no watch was left undamaged. Ultimately the Speedy was the one that survived better than the others, but it didn't survive perfect.

The Cal. 321 was issued because that was being used by Omega at the time, and as soon as Omega found out that NASA was using their watches as official gear, they put the 'Professional' moniker on the dial. Furthermore, Omega did a slight re-engineer to the Lemania movement to create the 861, which was also tested by NASA and approved.

As far as anyone knows, only the cal.321 actually went to the moon and was worn by astronauts who walked on the moon. There is conjecture about the 'personal' watches that could be flown as well, the most famous example being Jack Swiggert's Rolex (which appears in pics just after they got retrieved in the sea when Apollo 13 came back).

What you have to understand is that NASA has to approve all tech used for EVA, but any astronaut can wear anything they want inside the capsule. There's tonnes of research on this.

I actually really like the Cellini but fuck paying 15k+ USD for the privilege of owning the least rolexy Rolex when I could get a more classic dresswatch like the Patrimony for the same money.
There's no way Rolex will ever adjust their prices back to a more reasonable level even if (and that's a gigantig if) the demand ever cools down. The bubble would completely burst and the would be that.
I was at the dealer the other day because of the Datejust I want to order and it was hilarious. Cases full of Skydwellers and Day-Dates and they didn't have a single Submariner, Daytona or GMT Master in the exhibit. They simply don't need to, if somebody affluent enough buys enough watches they take one out of the vault and offer it to him.
Even the other steel models were very rare, most of the store window was populated with diamond Lady Datejusts and Day-Dates.

It's working for them though and I'm even considering upgrading straing from the DJ to the Day-Date simply because there's less hassle involved and the step up in price isn't even that big anymore at this point. I can imagine that if Rolex didn't ahve these inflated prices customers might not have jumped ship to the steel Royal Oaks that much which are now in an even worse situation.

I don't know, are you sure? Because if Rolex keeps upping the price of their watches each year by 300 Francs and 1000 Francs in a facelift year it would be hard for the used and grey market not to rise in a similar fashion.

It makes me so mad and at the same time they already broke down my resistance. God damn them all to hell, these Swiss guys are so smart.

Agreed about the DD but I think I'll stay with my decision of picrelated and for christmas a used 11670LN GMT instead. The Day-Date won't run away soon and there will surely be a more suitable occasion to celebrate with this purchase.
I was told that my combination (36 mm Datejust with sticks on blue dial) takes the longest, I'm looking at 6 to 8 weeks until they can get me one. Same watch but black dial would be two weeks. I didn't really need it that soon so I don't care and since it's a pretty big and reputable dealer I didn't have to give them any down payment or anything.

Yes, horizontal clutch. Used by nearly every chronograph manufacturer before the 1960s. Try finding a vertical clutch for 250USD.

>>15298575
The difference is that the vertical clutch 'drops' the second counter onto the running seconds, which allows for a more precise start and arguably less power diminution on the gear train. The horizontal clutch simply pushes a wheel to mesh with the running seconds; this can result in a slight 'bump' to the start of the chronograph seconds as the teeth intermesh.

The only downside of the vertical clutch is that if engaged for long periods (i.e. years) or left engaged if the watch is sitting in a safe, the possibility exists that the wheels can stick together or may need to be unmounted. But it's not something that happens often at all, just another scare tactic by people who prefer one over the other.

The vertical clutch is superior, but since both work well, the issue comes down to how smoothly you want the chronograph to engage. I think the vomitanon is just trying to be edgy.

If you buy from HKED, then you should be fine. Give in to the temptation, but consider it an historical curiosity and a temporary watch, something that will scratch the itch of 'I want a mechanical chronograph so I can play with it'. I've easily gotten my money's worth, and it's still holding +0.5/day.

>>15299050
You're right regarding the servicing costs; an independent might charge around 200$ for a chronograph, and that's very close to the initial price of the watch. I plan to use mine until it stops working, then I'll get some tools and deconstruct it as a hobby to learn more about watchmaking. That is, if my hands don't start shaking in a few years. The 1963 is a temporary watch, a beginner's chronograph. In today's world, that's all it can be.

Why? It causes people to value a product more than they normally would. What Rolex is doing is making their product desirable not by directly advertising it but by creating a demand for the product by making it appear rare.

The unfortunate thing is, you can get a basic no-date submariner off of Chrono24 for 6.7k from Japan, lowest price right now. You can get one with a box for 6.8 from America. These watches exist on the secondary market; the only problem you have is making sure that it's genuine.

But then again I take the strategy that if I wanted one of these watches, I'd buy the cheapest authentic one and have it serviced by the makers. Given how my Omega came back (i.e. looking brand fucking new), there's nothing to stop the same from happening if you send a Rolex in for servicing if it has scratches and shit.

That being said, you have to factor in the price of servicing (let's say, 800-1000). If you put that on top of the price you're paying, you're still paying less by going secondary market + servicing as opposed to brand new + premium.

The only reason to buy new is if you plan on selling later on, but in that case you have to make the watch a safe-queen.

False. The Credor line has had a really weird history. The Credors from the 90s and early 2000s are mid-range quartz pieces, not the micro-art studio pieces people usually associate the mark with. There are also GS pieces finished to micro-art studio standards (like the GS 8 day) without the Credor mark.

probably no because most people just use the alpinist as a quirky dress watch

inner rotating bezels used as a compass is not unique to the alpinist even, but its a uncommon feature that made it more interesting. Alpinist is made to be a durable field watch (hence the shock resist and 200WR)

now some of the new models just another watch with faux aged lume and a inflated price tag
