A high end luxury watch causes more problems than it solves

Do I wear it daily or conserve it to reduce wear and tear?
Do I wash it and risk damage if it's not water resistant?
Do I service it and how often? Am I ok with getting raped on the fees?
Do I get it polished while being serviced or not? Looks vs value retention dilemma
Do I sell it now to get out of it or do I keep it until all the boomers die and no one's around that cares about watches except Hong Kongers and Singaporeans?

Imagine cucking like this

I'm a brainlet so I'm gonna word this terribly, but here goes:

The quartz thing is inside a metal tube, then there is copper rolled around it. Right? If right, proceed to next question:

Is there a specific amount of copper that needs to be round those quartz tubes?

Could you cut a tiny piece of copper off and it'd still work without it?

Could the movement be shorted if something touched that copper wire?

I realize this post is reddit formatted AND tremendously faggoty but hopefully a kind anon can help me understand, I've always wanted to know these things.

The only watch chad wears is INVICTA.
The one and only brand which can satisfy the drenched begging pussies.
I bet a lot of these watchfags are virgins who are desperately hoping having a Rolex will finally get them laid.
Guess what girls don't know about neither give a shit about "muhhhh precision crafted" watch movements and all these obscure foreign name luxury brands.
If you crave attention for your watch your only option is the CHADVICTA. Walk into a room with one of these suckers and everyone will instantly know about your watch, glaring in JEALOUSY.
INVICTA simply EXUDES testosterone.
Having an office meeting with your boss who has some cuckboy rollie or omega, with all the stacies there listening? Simply roll up your sleeve I guarantee you all the stacies will be fully focused on your MAGNIFICENT TIMEPIECE it just EXUDES EXCELLENCE.
These watches even put obnoxious jogger rappers who be trying to stunt with their soft womanly "iced out rollie" ok princess, your watch is TWICE the size just like your manhood.
You weak pussy simpboys talk shit about INVICTA, because you are absolutely INTIMIDATED. Deep down you just know you can't pull off something which requires such ABSOLUTE ALPHA DOMINATION of every weak simp in the room at ALL times. NO other watch brand can compete. Soiko is the perfect example of the ESTROGEN brand for WEAK EFFEMINATE boys(not MEN), and that is why those are the most commonly found watches posted here.
I need my watch to be very water proof, my WEAK Rolex and soiko always breaks from the pussy juice so INVICTA provides me with a valuable product.

They charge up for months with 10 minutes in the sun, and are a good size, big enough to be legible and to know it's there but small enough that it doesn't get in the way. After that level you can consider those all to the highest standard. The microdeviations literally have no bearing in what you see on your wrist and in my opinion is a really stupid thing to focus on. Once that level of surface finish is met you should be caring about the movement and actual design aesthetic. Rolex and Omega can command the prices they ask for because they're the luxury brands normies know about and laude over. Think of how many people become wealthy and immediately just buy a Rolex because "lel its fuckin Rolex". Will I gladly pay less and think it's cool I'm getting that level of finish? Sure. I'm not focusing on those differences though because you literally don't even notice them. I'm focusing on the watch's movement and actual artistic design. Turns out at my current gig I actually do have some use for a watch with complications!
I need a chrono and a dive bezel!
But I only have a diver and a chrono. So before I start wearing two watches, I'm thinking about an upgrade.
So essentially, it's a pilot chrono with a turning bezel, like pic related or >>15295593 (I assume those bezels turn).
But problem is, I also need water resistance (the timing is for groundwater pumping tests, so loads of water splashing about).
What are my options? Also, I like to LARP as a poorfag, so no haute horology pieces please!
[spoiler]
Ignoring all the >muh soul >muh spinny gears >muh artisan craftmanship >muh heritage autism, some ana-digi quartz probably would be best. Is there a G-shock with a dive-bezel?

The funny thing is that the watch keeps time like a champ. It's +4 seconds fast a day every single day, and everything works perfectly. It was a pretty hard fall, too. It bounced. Maybe that's why they like it at Nasa lol, it can take a hit

I should take it to Omega for service so they put the missing hand back, but I read that they take months to give you your watch back and I keep putting it off.

Perhaps, or perhaps you don't understand why we love them. The outer appearance is just part of the reason why we chase after watches, and though depending upon your social circle it can have ramifications or not, the exterior status a watch can contribute to is not the primary reason for buying one.

The fear of scuffing the finish is a real one, to be sure, but after a while you learn habits that prevent those things from happening, and when they do inevitably happen by accident, you learn to accept it and even 'celebrate' the individuality the watch is picking up through its scuffs.

I had my Seamaster serviced a year and a half ago, and it looks nothing like what it looked like before. Repolished, refinished, new crown and helium escape valve, etc. The watch I'd looked at during formative times of my life looked new, and thus 'not mine' anymore. It was a shock, but then again, now I'm reacclimatizing to it. The only thing scuffed is the clasp (which is a scratch magnet), but the rest of it is still fresh. Who knows. Maybe they sent me a new watch and threw away my old one.

>>15295432
Unfortunately, you're incorrect. You can wear it daily or not, depending on your work and rotation. Oils today don't pool, so you don't have to worry about long-term storage, nor does it make sense to have a watch on a winder unless it's a full calendar that is difficult to set (and you want to wear it at least 1 day in 7). You don't need to wash a watch, and luxury watches are usually at least 50m so in gentle water and soap is fine. Servicing is dependent on the wear, the movement, etc. You can always get it done by a trusted independent. Polishing is your choice, but it's your watch, so unless you plan (invest) on reselling it, then polishing is fine. Finally, someone will always want a fine watch. I know, because I'm still buying them (at rather low prices).

I had a few back in the days when you had to get them from Hong Kong and the movements were beyond shit. Looked awesome, and my girlfriend at the time liked that one more than the real Omega that I had...lol In the end though, the real ones perform and feel very different to the fakes, and if you care about the technological performance and reliability of your watch, then start saving and get what you want. Saving is hard, and it requires discipline, but it's not impossible. Any watch is within reach, but the question is what are you willing to sacrifice in order to get it, and after buying it, will it enrich your life as much as the potential things you gave up. That's the question.

>>15295477
I'm going to eventually get one myself, but I'm saving for a Cal. 321 (not the new reengineered one, but one from 1965-7). They're still going around 10k or so for decent condition. Speedys are the ultimate hand-wound chronograph, both in reliability and aesthetic design. Good choice Anon.

>>15295500
Servicing is less than that, even at Rolex, especially for a simple movement with only a date complication. Chronographs cost more to service. Also, the recommended servicing time is 5 - 7 years, but the way most people wear their watches, you can go 10 years until service as long as you don't dive regularly.

None of what you said makes sense. If you mean the construction of an individual link, then higher number of parts allows for finishing precision and aesthetic styling that might not be possible with a single piece of steel. The Seamaster has a link constructed of 9 individual pieces (5 brushed, 4 polished), and it's silky smooth. Other bracelets from other manufacturers go further or not. As much as the average joe might look down on the Submariner bracelet, for instance, it's a perfect tool-watch bracelet (just enough components to be smooth and not pull hairs, but still function over form).

>>15295504
You can do this, but you need to know your watches and be able to store them for 50 years. Anything less than that and you won't make enough profit to overcome inflation, and further to that if you can't wear the watch you own, what is the point? That in my view is a waste.

>>15295605
Off-the-shelf Etas have been used by everyone, especially during the 80's reconstruction, so I think it's unfair to turn your nose up at that. In-House movements are usually modifications of already proven movements, as real in-house is built from the ground up and costs a tonne for R+D. What I'm saying is, in-house vs. off-the-shelf ETA should not be a dealbreaker for anyone; it's a talking point for sellers, and usually a justification to charge more.

>>15295616

Jesus Anon. Take it to a friendly neighborhood watchmaker to install a new hand (Omega hasn't been supplying independents, but there should be plenty of these hands spare out there). Also, there are other issues you'll want them to check just to be safe. The last thing you want is to be running the watch with dust and shit floating around the movement because you dropped it on the floor. Get it fixed ASAP.

>>15296888
The date on my Seamaster is really only useful for filling out forms and shit. It's a convenient complication, and on the Rolex it has the added benefit of a magnifier, which is horrific aesthetically but necessary as your eyes get older.

>>15297332
Stowa was one of the original manufacturers of Fliegers that were used by the German Luftwaffe. The others included Lange, IWC, and a few others I can't remember. At the moment, Stowa uses ETAs, but I think they might go into some in-house modifications if the sales pick up. Likely not, because the vast majority of watches they sell are fliegers that look like 1940's fliegers. They're awesome if you want one, but if you're like me you see them as yet another time-only watch that I don't need another of.

Tudor has a problem in the modern day. When it was first conceived, it was a company that would make a watch that wouldn't cost as much as a Rolex but still be as reliable. When everyone needed a mechanical watch, this made sense. After the quartz revolution and the reconstruction of the watch world in the 70s, mechanical watches were put in the drawer of 'luxury, prestige, heritage' rather than 'practical tool'. This purpose is anathema to the original purpose of Tudor, and thus it is now considered to be the watch for a person who can't afford a Rolex. It's a horrible connotation, but impossible to escape.

Some Anons like the design, and a few have claimed to own them. I think the designs today are definitely going in the direction of being somewhat unique or at least individual, but in my mind it'll always be a 'poor-man's Rolex'. I'd never buy one.

the 2020 300's have META, COSC, ceramic bezel, ceramic dial, finishing 10000x better than any tudor or rolex, and you can get one for $3500. My gripe's the stupid HEV, hands, no non-date option, and the wretched bracelet hasn't been upgraded in decades.

The fact that you're comparing it to rolex says a lot desu @ 1/3 the price

Re-read the post: I was talking about Tudor divers, not the Seamaster. I just wanted to post the pic of the black seamaster with the original bond bracelet, which it was equipped with for about 2 years (or less) before they started to come with the Speedmaster variant bracelet which is less complex and arguably less choice.

That being said, every diver is compared to the Rolex Sub because that's been the standard for decades. The newer Omega Master Chronometers are potentially better in terms of performance, though reliability is still untested in terms of decades for the coaxial variant.

the new alpinist is like $700. : (
it comes with upgraded movement (70hrs power reserve vs the old 50)
but has ugly cyclops and logo

the old alpinist will only keep going up in price as supplies dwindle. Yes 450ish is "expensive" but... if you like *that look* it is what it is and theres no real alternative

In this condition, definitely tough. It's a beautiful specimen though. For a long time I thought about saving up to get the last generation Sea-Dweller that was produced in the 90s, because I always thought that was the ultimate dive watch of any of them. But, my tastes changed...and I tried on a Day-Date (it looks fucking amazing on the wrist).

Watches are things, and money is everywhere if you know where to look and how to make sure people think your skills and knowledge and ability are valuable enough to trade. If you work hard and save hard, a Rolex isn't out of reach. Even a decent double-red Seadweller can be had for 40k USD. That's the average price of a car.

It all comes down to what you want to do with your money Anon, and what makes you happy.

Say you own a collection with a few pretty shit decisions (albeit, watches were obtained with a decent discount)

Breitling diver chronograph
IWC Pilot chronograph 3717
IWC Portofino (white dial and only dress watch)
IWC Pilot chronograph 3878 (imagine sending a watch off for 5 repairs before they replaced the entire movement)
Seven Friday P1 (gifted)
Fifty Fathoms Bathyscaphe

What would you add/change with a limit of $5k? The only watches that you can sell would be the 3717 and Portofino (maybe ~$3.5k and ~$3k) with everything else having some sentimental value/meaning. Thinking an Omega Speedmaster would be a decent addition. Not sure about Grand Seiko but some designs seem alright so I'd have a cursory look through again.

There aren't any shit decisions here Anon; the issue is what sings to you when you it's on your wrist and what doesn't. The 3878 was bad luck; it happens with these kinds of things.

1) Establish what you are actually 'collecting'. Do you want 'one of each' (i.e. dress watch, sports chronograph, diver, flieger, and complication?), do you want to collect mainly IWCs? Do you want to eventually go to a higher tier (i.e. JLC and VC, maybe even Patek?
2) Figure out what you wear regularly and what you don't. Also determine which watch you reach for the most emotionally. Put the others in a safe or sell them...no point having them if you don't wear them.
3) Once you've figured out 1 and 2, then you can go to watch boutiques and try every damn thing on that is within the price range and design specs you're looking for.

3 is a very important step. Older Anons have heard this story before, so I won't go through all of it. Bottom line? I went and tried on watches I'd always dreamed of owning and could now afford to seriously consider, and a few unpleasant surprises hit me.

1) The Omega Globemaster looks good in pics but horrendous on my wrist. Fucking awful.
2) The JLC Reverso is so light it feels like it's a gumball machine watch from Chuckecheezes.
3) The Speedy always looks perfect on my wrist. The Sapphire Sandwich does not.

The point is, these are all watches I think look amazing, but upon trying them on there are concerns. Sometimes, like the Speedy, they sing to you immediately when you try them on. Sometimes, you try something on and it feels and looks awful. Such is life.

Regarding the Grand Seiko; for me the aesthetic is like Zenith; I love the tech inside, but I hate the way it's presented outside. You can't go wrong with the tech and finishing though; I have a colleague who has one and it's perfect on his wrist...looks amazing. Have you looked into Breguet? Also, I'm a fan of VC, so why not look into them.

Good points that I can agree with. It was mostly just to see if anyone had any thoughts and share something interesting that might catch my eye. I will likely move to higher tiers but that's still a few more years away once I start earning a more proper salary. Not sure myself where I'm going with it but I think I'll be leaning towards collecting one per style/complication/function before reaching the point where I start collecting multiples from a brand again.

Problem is I'm situated in a city with limited boutiques and access to brands. For what is available, it's not the full catalogue in most cases. It'll still be awhile at this point before I can fly out.

I do have similar sentiments with regards to Seiko, I just can't see what I'd enjoy in some of their design choices but there are a couple on my shortlist that I'd like to have a look at. I've also been exploring Glashutte Pano collection but not available where I am. JLC is something I'll have a look at but VC is still above my price range for the styles that I might like.
