Redpill me on Fortis B42.I was toying with the idea of doing a big purchase, looking for watches, I like space, so speedy was the first option (well, the first option is the sturmanskie since its cheap and nice), but it feels like speedy price is always going up and it's less a toolwach and more jewelry and Omega is milking it.And then after reading about russia and space knew about Fortis, the watch looks nice, robust for everyday wear, the price it's reasonable, and the brand being ''unknown'' sounds appealing.

I would call it cringe, and boringly stereotypical. But it's a good watch that does the job.

Also I find that I judge time far better with analog versus digital. I am not talking about reading time, I'm talking about judging the passing of time and judging how much time I have left. The visual movement of the hands portrays this to you much better than digital numbers do.

I'm not saying you shouldn't get the ae1200 it's prob the best cheap lcd watch out there besides the gshocks and the f91w and its variants

If you are interested it's not hard to find a vintage digital watch. Back in the 80s these were well made and steel cased whereas today pretty much all lcd watches are plastic cases. You can often find them on ebay for 20 bucks listed as broken when they just need a battery change. Who cares if they're scratched up, scars of age.

Man it's such a big undertaking to search and buy a vintage watch. If you really interested then the Golden rules are: is every part original (hands dial movement) is the dial refinished, is the case original or has the scratches been polished out. The movement is an even bigger headache.

I spent about 5 months searching on ebay for a good specimen of pic related and even then the one I settled on was a fucking mexican butcher job but at least it keeps great time and the dial is original.

I would say a good 80% 90% of vintage watches on ebay are massively overpriced. You just want to utterly sink yourself into the watch you want and learn absolutely everything you can about it. Watch youtube videos guiding you further on buying vintage watches, scour every post made on every forum etc.

I don't have the watch here, but it's fairly similar like pic related, but with a nicer dial with a sunburst radial pattern on the inner circle, slightly different hour marks and the same case.

The brand is F.Martin, posted the watch on the old /g/ but nobody could say me something about the watch or brand, just it looked like a 50's watch, probably true because It was from my grandfather and he had a lot of cheap watches (several low tier citizen and orient ones) and that one looked like one of the firsts if not his first big boy watch.

Googling thebrand only gives me some mantel clocks from the art noveau era, the brad was french, and after looking similar watches with ''ancre 17 rubis'' similar watches appeared.Apparently factories sold almost done watches (ebauches) and then the watchmakers finished it by themselves, so the market was filled with affordable swiss watches.

Don't know it's quality, but the motherfucker is a handwind watch that after all that time has a correct power reserve for its supposed movement and gains 25s/day, which is pretty nice considering its lack of tuning or manteinance.

TL;DR, any brands other than Deep Blue for dive watches I should look into?

I find myself repeatedly going back to Deep Blue simply for value. I can get a watch for sub $300 that has an automatic movement, sapphire crystal, and ceramic/sapphire bezel, tritium markers (although I prefer standard lume) and I can't find anyone else who can come close to touching that for less than $700. But I need something else. I've got 3 fucking Deep Blue's out of the 5 that I own.

I like the look of Steinhart and H2o watches but I'm not dropping $1500 for a watch. I'm just not *that* into watches.

You'll want to put a solar-powered watch on a shelf instead of in a box. But yeah, even a low-end solar watch is going to charge for three months in two hours of T-shirted wrist time on a sunny day.

The general rule is that unless the movement is somehow power-thirsty (Citizen's dinner plate movements for example, with a chronograph and subdials and what-not), a post-2000 solar powered watch will accumulate at least as much power as it spends if it's in enough light to read a book by. (LV5 and above in photography terms.)

Some of them have a power saving mode where it'll stop the hands but retain accurate time for ten months in a black box, then walk back to correct time when exposed to light again.

I've got a bit of a nerd-on for ecodrive, in case it's not obvious from this comment.

the lume is really bad, the movement is kind of loose in that sometimes you get one that's within 5s a day or less, sometimes 30s a day. the lack of quickset date is the most annoying part, you should just get one with no date if possible. the bezel not having a lume pip sucks but it can still be used to time things so whatever

These watches on ali-express really are something.
I've ordered a bunch to give away, mainly because I wanted to see their quality. Most are surprising for the 3€ I paid for them on average.
I kept just two, both of which are not working anymore after a few months.

Are there any good chink watch models? I feel like there could very well be something with great value.

Here's my latest mod, it's a vintage styled field watch built around a Seagull movement.

I'd had the case for ages after my first modding attempt ended in failure, I finally got around to finishing it.

I'd planned on using the $170 SW200 Sellita movement, but I opted for a Seagull clone and saved a hundred- their movements are pretty solid, I'm sure it'll be comparable to the Swiss made one.

The crystal on the front and rear of the case are sapphire, and it's got a screw down crown as well. I'm unsure of what to do yet for a strap, I may make a leather one but I'm also leaning towards getting a canvas strap.

Overall, pretty happy with this mod- at this point I just have to trim the stem to length.

the pepsi is more loud, more "diver" although the turtle in general has an extreme diver aesthetic anyway. a cool thing about the PADI is that it has green and blue lume, while the regular one only has green, although that actually does annoy some people.
i'd also consider the Save the Ocean one which has a gradiant blue dial that's beautiful. not the great white shark save the ocean, the regular save the ocean. that's beautiful and my pick. between the two you have, I'd take the PADI because it's more fun with the pop of red and the turtle's aesthetics are laid back and fun with the retro cushion case

In relation to stealing content, you know those super long reviews that he does pretty much reading the wikipedia of the brand? He was caught reading word by word articles made by someone else completely uncredited.
Also some guy who spent a shit tone of money on camera gear to take macro pictures of fancy watches, didn't like tgv using his pics completely uncredited in his videos, that's why a year ago tgv went a month or two without posting, pretty much a copyright strike.

I get what you say but in my experience, only watch people will truly care in reality. And the thing is, if they like your personality, they will be okay with the dumbest combinations or watches. If they dislike you, they will use any argument against you, they can find. So i wouldn't bother too much. Besides, some people hate wearing bracelets and want comfortable leather for daily wear.

But in reality, mainly in this expensive "tool watches" range, they are used as jewlery, this obsession of being 100% tool is such a weird cosplay, if you need a real tool just by a g shock instead.
Honestly, I prefer the look of a dive watch on a leather/suede strap over a nato strap.

The 10 years is a gimmick and mostly never reached. Maybe if you never use the light or alarm. But 6-7 years might be possible.
Well, the digi needs less energy to turn LCD segments on or off. Analog quartzes have losses due to friction from the gearing for the hands and the seconds hand moving also wastes power. Additionally, most movements are cheap shit and just not optimized to run longer.

Would be actually interesting to see somebody mod a shitter quartz to make it run longer. Would like to see what goes into the process and what can be done by a single person.
