The undecorated thing stopped being true many years ago. Seiko has been decorating the 8L over the last few years. Minimally, but it’s there, including fancy Tokyo stripes.

Also even though they could regulate them, the 8L is accurate enough out of the factory that it’s COSC after it settles down. You would be unlucky to get a king tuna that doesn’t keep very accurate time. Like within 3 to 5 seconds per day.

Haven't really been visiting these threads for a couple of years now, and I've had no interest in adding anything to my collection of shitters and fairly decent vintage shitter Seikos. But anyway, I've been bored and started reading these threads which are as autistic as ever, and naturally I've started idly checking eBay for stuff to repair but HOLY SHIT, what has happened to the second-hand market for Seiko? Everything is like twice as expensive as even 2-3 years ago.
I'm starting to seriously consider selling my 10 or so watches that are worth selling and buying something like a BB58 instead.
What do you think?

yes, they actually do. a lot of rich people buy special rich people socks sold at upscale boutiques that cost 10-20 times the price of your socks.
they do it because once you have so much money that you never have to worry about it, you can afford to spend tons of money on frivolous shit. imagine yourself seeing some kitschy keychain at an airport and buying it for 5 dollars because it makes you laugh once and it's not a whole lot of money. that's how some people feel dropping 100k. they operate on a different baseline.
but if you live in a first world country it's not worth thinking about. ultimately they have better stuff than you, but your life is not that much worse.

I would argue that life is much worse for regular people in countries where there's a significant amount of rich people, because they take all your women, they ruin your neighborhoods, and you're never really poor so there's no solidarity with your fellow poor people, everyone's always trying to fuck you over to get into that next bracket, so the rich have a much greater effect than in poorer countries where there's a smaller percentage of rich people who live in mansions where no one ever sees them, and everyone else is more or less equal.

you are wrong because I've lived in shitty countries, where the rich just siphon the wealth and live in an entirely different world, while you scrounge at the absolute bottom with a much worse standard of living. when the country is wealthier in general, everyone is wealthier, even poor people. a poor person in america for instance can still have a car made within the last 5 years, can have a comparable TV to a rich person, and can even eat comparable food. obviously you will not be able to have everything leonardo dicaprio has, but you will be closer to living how he does than some guy in a brazilian favela.
you are saying that it's better if you don't know rich people exist but live in the gutter, than to know they exist but have a higher quality of life, because you will feel jealous. that's your problem, not society's. there is no greater solidarity amongst the poor in third world nations either, in fact people will sell you out even faster because they are more desperate. the way you speak of the rich shows me that you have little understanding of real hardship. in the shithole countries you are romanticizing right now, you would be considered one of the rich, and they would kill you and take your 500 dollar seiko shitter because that is as luxurious to them as a double flying tourbillon is to you.

How though? Is there a material difference? What exactly is the difference though? Material? Because I've seen for example $500-5k wallets that are literally put together worse and they're less durable than $20 wallets, and the $500-5000 ones are supposedly high end fancy wallets and shit. Because if it's actually better, and you are rich as fuck, why do you care? It's like a Rolex Sub vs. a Seiko Turtle. The Turtle is just as good of a diver as a Sub. It has just as much heritage. It also has an in-house movement. In some ways it's arguably better, in being more legible. But overall, the Rolex Sub is a better watch because it has better materials, will hold its value better, and is tested to a higher standard.
Is it that much better to justify being over 10 times the price? No, probably not, but it is definitely better, and you are so fucking rich that you don't have to think about the price anyway. Why would you not get the Sub if you wanted it? Hell, you could just get both.

High end socks are made out of silk, mohair, cashmere, extremely high end fine merino wool, very expensive long staple cottons, ones that make Egyptian cotton look like rough texas cotton in comparison. They are also much more carefully quality controlled and their machinery and production process is very different than a Chinese factory making tube socks.
>Because I've seen for example $500-5k wallets
There is scam garbage at every price point. Especially designer stuff is very frequently the same as a $10 wallet but they slap a logo on it and mark it up 1000x. Just like when you buy a $2 package of tube socks, one brand might fall apart instantly and be itchy, another might be durable and soft.

Well, duh, obviously it can do as much turns on that dial until the power reserve runs out…
But seriously, I have been wondering about that one too. Why do all (2-subdial) chronos only have a 30min subdial and a small seconds one? Wouldn't just getting rid of the small seconds and having a 60 minutes and an XX hour subdial make much more sense?
Why wasn't this done?
Sure, probably more complicated and was maybe not possible, way back when, but even if so, why a 30 min subdial, instead of a 60? I'd imagine that 60 is more easy, since everything on the watch is based on 1 turn = 60. Why now introduce 1 turn = 30?

some do but think about how often you use the chrono. having the small seconds is basically a barometer for if the watch is wound that you can see at a single glance.
you probably use the chrono very rarely and for less than 30 minutes at a time anyways. I've never used a chrono though so I can't attest to this. but I would think that knowing whether the watch is powered up is more useful than having an extra 30 mins, which you could probably just estimate based on how long it has been anyways

Vostok is Russian, Vostok Europe is Latvian (or Lithuanian? And they use Japanese movements). However, meranom, which appears to be Vostoks official retailer (really, though?) also sells them, so who knows.
But it's not like they're an option anyways, since they don't make watches, only dinner plates. Sad really, I like their design and cheesy fake soviet heritage.

Is it normal to only like dress watches?

I like to wear a watch, and can appreciate a good timepiece, but really just don't like the look of all other styles of watches.
I really can't see why someone would spend Rolex money on a GMT M-ii over a good looking dress watch, and that's one of the better ones. Diver/Alpine watches tend to look like the watch equivalent of the fits that get roasted on here.

Bracelet, lume, just general age.
Apparently Rolex won’t even service the 14270 anymore.
I really can’t afford a 114270 and am therefore looking for reasons not to buy it.
>>15275449
Yah. That’s why I have the 36mm black bay and prefer the 36 mm explorer over the new one. You’re probably right.. I should get a sea dweller, the classiest watch of them all.

Looking to get a watch that'll last a while and I've been eyeing up solar powered ones. Could anyone recommend a subtle or military style one? Something along the lines of a AW5005-12X or SNE329

>Bracelet
Bracelet isn’t as fancy as the new models but it works just fine. Feels like a glove on me and it’s perfectly solid.

>Lume
Lume has never been the strong suit of the Explorer. But yes, the new models have very nice lume.

>Age
Mine literally still looks like new unless you take out a magnifying glass and start looking for scratches on the clasp.

It’s accurate to about 1.5 seconds per day and it’s 17 years old.
