>> No.15220965

> It’s always in threes, it’s always those notes, and the base note is so often the man or some sort of essential notes of him. Class and career also affect the way a person smells. Working class tends to be clean and soapy and crisp. Billionaires tend to smell like expensive things, like leather and whiskey or some name-brand cologne. The fact that he appreciates whisky doesn't mean that he would like to smell like one. If you can afford some fancy classic (like GIT) I'm sure he'd like it.

You can get it for 130-ish for 100ml online. Selfridges has always been jews. >Enchanted Forest is inspired by the endless sea of Russian forests and fairytales, as well as the most sensual ancient Slavic celebration named Kupala, rooted in the times of darkness, when all on the Earth knew its soul and its name (often too powerful to be uttered in vain or at all). French perfumer Bertrand Duchaufour, the famous creator of fragrances for L'Artisan Parfumeur, Comme des Garçons and Penhaligon's, built Enchanted Forest around black currant, the smell and taste of which are so beloved in Russia and many other countries where it grows.

Yeah, I had a 10ml decant and used it up last summer. I think it's one of the more underrated and overlooked summer Private Blends, not as good as Costa Azzura but better than Neroli Portofino and Mandarino di Amalfi. Slightly above the latter two for longevity but about what you'd expect from a citrus summer Italian cologne-style fragrance. It's a really nice pure citrus scent though, very unisex and possibly leaning feminine to some people but to me it's up there with Colonia Essenza, Cool Water and Pacific Rock Moss as something I'll probably get heavy use out of when it's 22c+ most days.

>>15221236

I did the same and used Jovoy to sample the whole Vagabond Prince range, which seems to be notoriously hard to find this side of the Atlantic. I really like Duchaufour's work but with the price none of them were buy worthy but they still stood out as interesting and enjoyable to wear. Personally liked Bass Solo most, Enchanted Forest is nice but very thick and hard to wear and really reminds me of a strong, sweet fruit cider or just sniffing a jar of blackcurrant jam even. Kinda wish he'd used more pine and woody notes and then it could have been something spectacular. Like the sweetness of Enchanted Forest mixed with the dark woods of CdG Zargorsk; that would have been mind blowing.

Might actually sample both again just to layer that one now.

Intersting, any other stuff you found on Jovoy that is interesting? My criteria were quite simple to be fair. I was just going over their catalogue and then sorting available fragrances on fragrantica by popularity (to get a good sense of what's characteristic of the brand) and then picking the ones with most interesting notes pyramides plus good ratings. Not ideal but I just wanted to get to 25 samples in order to have free shipping above 50 quids without spending a week researching what to get. That's why I also picked Enchanted Forest rather than Bass Solo - it had better ratings and more comments. From your description it seems that I won't like it as much as I thought I would but still because I expected it to be nice zesty fresh green blackcurrant but still looking forward testing it.

Brought a few full bottles like Noir d'Orient by Evody (no longer sold there), Pacific Rock Moss, HdP 1828 and the original bottle of Invasion Barbare I had before I re-brought it this year. Also first discovered Chypre Palatin there a few years back that's now since a favourite of mine. FdB Amber Intense is probably my favourite Jovoy one at the moment but it's not worth spending almost £600 on so I just get a sample from there every few months.

Great summer frag, despite the initial influencer forced hype when it originally came out. Got a bottle last spring and used almost a third of it up by October. It's up there with Colonia Essenza and Cool Water as one of my most regularly worn summer frags. Like the other two, would probably buy a new one if I use it up and it's still in production then. Seem to average a bottle of CW a year and CE every year and a half in the last four years.

Jerememe just released a video about date fragrances where the only two he recommends for men are
>MFK Amyris Homme
>Prada L'Homme
I must say that I'm a bit shocked, that's nothing that I expected from him. I don't like the sweet drydown of Amyris but the opening blast is truly amazing. Also L'Homme is not that bad (albeit I think it's super metro - my gf when she smelled it in John Lewis thought that it's a women perfume). Nevertheless I clicked on the video only to see him recommending Sauvage but got these instead.

Definitely prefer the cologne to the parfum. I don't know why but I just don't like the parfum at all. It feels like a classical barbershop style fragrance done wrong; too heavy, too dense and too close to skin rather than rich and spicy but light enough to gently fill the air like Invasion Barbare or Rive Gauche/Beau de Jour and even Reckless Parfum which feels like what Danger Parfum should have been. The cologne on the other hand is lighter but also spicier and a bit sharper and works perfectly. It's as good as IB or BdJ but a different take on a rich and spicy classical barbershop scent.

Sort of. It’s a family business, my great grandpa bought a bunch of properties back in the day before the city was really developed. The properties used to be vacant lots in undeveloped areas. He built a movie theatre and candy shop on one lot, and that’s how it started. Over the years, as the city grew, many of our properties wound up being in very desirable areas, so now we have office buildings, night clubs, bars, etc. in the heart of one of the financial capitals of North America. The company is split currently three ways: my Uncle has one share, my Aunt has another, and my Mother had a share, but gave her share to me, since she already had more than enough to retire on from her own business. So sort of a preemptive inheritance, I guess. Been like this for over 20 years now.

1725 opens really nicely but then I find it falls apart in the dry down and doesn't hold up or last anywhere near as long as IB does. But I guess it's trade-offs, 1725 opens better but IB is better overall and by a clear margin. There was just something about the dry down in 1725 I really didn't like, was expecting it to be really good though.

>> No.15221763

>>15221740
They're similar when it comes to a bit powdery lavender-spices accord that comes out after the initial short bergamot-grapefruit opening. The difference is that spices in IB consist of a big punch of cardamom, whereas in 1725 it's a sweeter mix of spices with dominant licorice. Some of the sweetness of 1725 comes from quite distinct vanilla that is way more tamed in IB. Both are great but IB smells immediately more expensive to my nose. You can't forget the lavender+cardamom accord it has. When it comes to performance then IB wins by a margin both longevity- and projection-wise but 1725 costs 3x less, so for its price you can just carry a travel spray with you everywhere and reapply it every 3hours.

>Paco is indeed very sweet but it has a sort of "gone" soapiness that is rarely felt anymore and is reminiscent somewhat of Kouros. It's the first to use dihydromyrcenol and really introduced that Tide fresh smell to fine fragrance.
>Azzaro is a bit spicier and warmer at the expense of soapiness. It's also substantially more discrete but this can be a good thing.
>Drakkar is the most obnoxious and exaggerated of the bunch, huge amounts of pine, woods, dihydrmyrcenol soapiness, tangerine and juniper and super smooth when it dries down.
>RG has my favorite scent of the bunch and would honestly be a contender for my pick if I could only have one bottle, tied with Fahrenheit. The problem is that it's so hard to find now that it's discontinued. Hopefully YSL gets some sense and decides to start producing it again

Yeah, that's one of the types of amber I really like. I liked Ambre Sultan but found Amber Absolute just goes that much further keeping the rich warmth but going darker especially with the vintage bottle I have that's got a noticeably aged vanilla note. FdB seems to take it further, but hten the price is a deal breaker.

Didn't really like the colder, dryer amber style in Ambra Aurea or Ambre 114 though. Jeroboam Ambra was nearly there but it's too fruity, reminds me of an old amber and apricot hand soap I remember from the early 00s. Amber Absolutely though manages to get it spot on, fruity amber but still nice and woody with a light sandalwood incense accord.

Excerpt from "From Pyrgos" Habit Rouge review:

"I smell none of myself in this kind of 1960s fireside, leather-bound library smell. My mo is freshly-cut grass and a morning breeze through a field of wildflowers in Sarrazac. When you think about it, the differences here are vast. When I thought about it, I realized that every scent can be abstracted in one's imagination, enough so that whatever image you end up with will either draw you, or send you away. The abstraction of Habit Rouge is a wall of old coverless books with a crackling fireplace and a dram of whiskey waiting on the hearth. You have to be an intellectual for that kind of thing. "

Quite an interesting blog. Thanks for bringing it up. That's an interesting excerpt from one of his posts.

>Always have a large fruit handy, like a smooth melon or even just a large apple. Spritz it with your new find, and let its skin simulate yours. Sit several feet away from it. Walk past it quickly.
>Is what you're smelling on the fruit the same as what was on your hand in the store?
>With very cheap fragrances, there's a higher chance that the headspace off the fruit will emit something bland, clean, and nondescript. Close up, with your nose mere millimeters from where you sprayed, you may get a very complex blend of lucid accords and individual notes.
>But from a natural social distance of four to six feet, you may get a very blobby, washed-out "cologney baloney" chemical smell, as faceless as a Swedish guy at the Winter Olympics. All of those perky green-woods and musk notes may become Bounce dryer sheets. A few ounces of extra air between the scent and your nose may reveal where the fragrance company's budget fell short.
>Cheapies like Caron Yatagan and Krizia Uomo don't suffer this fate because their profit margin is modest. In fairness though, Caron charges premium prices for their scents at retail, and only grey market prices are reasonable. Ditto for Krizia.
>This fact makes typical internet sales for them excellent deals, and the kind of "cheapie" one can buy without second guessing their judgment.
>Stuff by Jovan, Playboy, Nautica, and Avon are not as likely to fare well in the headspace test. This isn't to say that all scents by these brands are "cologney baloney" in nature. But some are. If you want a super cheap "cologney" effect, and don't mind smelling like ivory-white laundry, you may as well just wear 4711. For that effect, the fault is exclusively found in any and all pretense.

I just got my decant and sprayed it 12 times to feel it properly. First of all the initial blast has this metallic quality that reminded me of Penhaligon's Sartorial. It's gone soon after and it doesn't remind me of Sartorial after the very opening. Which is a pity because despite how much I wanted to like Azzaro it smells dated to my nose. There are many interesting qualities to it including the snice soft leather and the anise-lavender accord that is definitely remarkable and gonna stay in my memory for long time as a point of reference just like Kouros did. But from the overall vibe you can tell that APH is from 80s. Nothing wrong with that to be clear with you and I'm glad that I discovered it being in mid 25 because I might revisit it in 10 years and make it my signature scent then (it's definitely signature worthy and it immediately brings a character like Gordon Gekko to your mind when you smell it) but now I don't feel like I vibe well with it and I'll rather enjoy my more modern fougeres through my 20s.

>> No.15223664

APH is a 70's fougere. During the 80's everything became super exaggerated like Drakkar Noir, Kouros, and eventually Cool Water.

>> No.15223675

>>15223643
Also it made me reflect on the whole 'smelling dated' concept. I'm quite confused why I perceive Azzaro that way because my father hasn't been really using anything else than 4711 cologne and Old Spice in his life. For sure not 80s powerhouses or fougeres from what I can remember. I also don't have any olfactory memories of smelling other older men colognes when I was a kid (and even if I had, things like Azzaro were not available where I grew up back in the days). Moreover I'm rather open minded, deep into niche and wear stuff that others find dated like Kouros (or NYI that is my top 3 fragrance and sometimes gets called dated too). Regardless of that it was one of the first thoughts that came to my mind. I identified that carnation as in Aramis Aramis makes fragrances dated to my nose but it's nowhere to be found on Azzaro Pour Homme notes breakdown. Interesting how smells on one hand are entirely subjective but on the other you share some aesthetic group consciousness with others that can transcend your upbringing etc. It could be autosuggestion but as I said I'm quite into experimenting and niche myself. Idk

Patrician would be classical fougeres and classical chypres which don't exist in the current market. Best you can find is stuff labelled as "nu-geres" a la Fougere Royale 2010 resurrection and "neo-chypres" such as Chypre Palatin and Diaghilev, which claim to be classical but are more "classical inspired" in reality.

Uber Macho stuff are 80's takes on the above, the "powerhouse" genre.

I'm sure the houses still want to make them, but it's actually impossible to make a "true" fougere without lots of oakmoss. It's not restricted anymore, but now completely banned from any use at all. Just look at the recent Yatagan hysteria.

This one is more up my alley. Patchouli Intense. It's got some earthy bitterness, some aromatic geranium, and a bit shaving cream going on too. >pretty good rec for a simple freshie
Yes, it doesn't aspire to be anything more but at the same time the blend is wonderful and great quality. I got a back up bottle for the upcoming summer. For £13 that I paid for 100ml on eBay I can literally bath in it.
