Birthday yesterday, came to the epiphany that I needed to grow up. Can you guys point me in the right direction? Looking to incorporate slacks and whatnot.

I think what you are aiming for is menswear or business casual?
Get a few staples. Grey slacks, a woolen sweater, shirts in light blue, or with stripes, maybe textured. Buy more expensive stuff only once you know what you like.
First and foremost, don‘t fall for the slim fit meme. A tailored or tapered fit is great but slim fit has gone from „let‘s not look like we‘re wearing trashbags“ to literal leggings for men. Don‘t buy suits or suit jackets before you know how they should fit. Be sure that they cover your ass. Avoid things like polyester. If you can‘t afford quality items go to thrift stores/ebay etc.... Ok Suits can be bought for 30 bucks in a barely used condition.

Things that you should spend good money on: shoes, outerwear (Barbour is a good example for something expensive worth its price).
Don‘t go overboard. Don‘t wear a tie to casual events.
If you want a watch, don‘t buy one from a fashion company (Armani, Diesel...) It‘s a scam. Seiko and Citizen are good starting points. Some Chinese watches are also underrated (Rodina). Don‘t buy a knockoff though.

19. Need to grow out of being a boy with black skinny jeans, need to accept more responsibility in my life. Bunch of stuff, but my fashion is a part of it.

I wrote the wall of text above. My man, you‘re 19. Relax. You may follow all of the advice but don‘t think you can‘t wear casual outfits because you‘re 19. I‘m 26 and a lawyer. I wear suits every weekday. I wore a vintage oversized bomber and white adidas today. Don‘t be afraid of doing what you like. To really mature is to not give a fuck. If you want to walk around in beige chinos, sperrys and an ocbd shirt like a frat guy: do it. If you like more casual clothes: wear them. If you like both, do both.

Yeah, I don't plan on wearing suits everyday. Already went through that phase, lol. I went through a breakup and I just don't want to look like a kid anymore. I'm tired of the skinny black jeans with some oversized shirt. My father just got me a job learning to manage his office, so I suppose it's a part of the process. We'll see. Thank you for your words of advice.

Double pocket button down shirts always look good. Wear a decent belt and some jeans if you feel like it. Dont mix colors too much

If it helps you get more into the mindset psychologically of being an adult, then by all means dress more mature and "adult like". But it's nothing more than a placebo.

True maturity is valuing things like quality and functionality

Without the life of one, yes, it absolutely is a placebo. That's why I specified before that this isn't just about fashion. This is about wearing big boy clothes and accepting big boy responsibilities. Getting clothes and getting /fit/ is only a part of it.

Hey man from reading your thread I honestly think you you start out with some pants that are "regular", or tapered, or whatever they call the fit now that's like form fitting but not tight. (This is how slim-fit was before 2012) You should get some black jeans in this fit, because they're a pretty basic staple, and by not being skinny will feel less kid like. Get some plain, well fitting T-Shirts in black, white, grey, and maybe an earthtone if you like. Again you'll find that just by being plain and fitting correctly, it will feel more mature, but still pretty natural. If you need dress clothes for the job that's one thing, but if you try to dress like that all the time you won't feel right and it'll translate into how you carry yourself. Also get some casual chinos in black, grey, brown, and drab, or other colors be if you want. But you seem like you like dark pants. They can pair well with a t-shirt and give off a "I'm a white collar worker, but still fun and casual" vibe. Like you work in a creative sector rather than accounting. Wear some crewneck wool sweaters instead of sweatshirts and hoodies. If you like flannels, get some high quality ones in the right size (IE a Pendleton board shirt instead of a skatebrand one from the mall) just ease into it. Improve your own style, don't swap indentities. That'd be weird man.

I got a couple of simple stuff I can use. I see what you mean with trying too hard to be something that I'm not. That's something I should take heavily into consideration. Thanks for helping out.

Np. I'm older but semi relate. I've only ever liked to wear tight black jeans and earth tone flannel shirts my whole life, and just switching from "slim" to "regular" fit pants and getting higher quality shirts, and wearing plain tees instead of graphic tees really made me feel a world of difference.

It's a trap.
