Hey bros, I wanna treat myself to a half dressy/daily watch after getting a big promotion. Budget is around €1500.

I'm taking my time looking all over, Sinn, Hamilton, Stowa, Nomos, Longines and Frederique Constant, but so far my top pick is pic related (Oris). I read that they are overpriced for the movement (Sellita SW200), how big of a deal is this? I was also looking at used Omegas, but I don't wanna dive into those waters yet.

What are your thoughts /wt/?

Don't buy entry level luxury mall brands such as Longines, FC, or Oris. They're a scam meant to get you to spend money even if you can't afford a real watch.

Sinn makes sense (although their watches have bullshit thickness in a lot of cases) because of the German technology meme, similar goes for Stowa, Hamilton is a bullshit brand now but there's the American heritage meme, other than that there's fuck all in the sub-Speedy range. I would just buy a $500 watch instead, and either save money for a real watch, or forget about watches and happily wear the $500 shitter until I die.

I feel like Oris has a Swiss made tax attached to it, but they’re nice. SW200 is still a reliable movement and you probably won’t get better movement specs until you’re in the $3000+ range.

With that said, autists make a huge deal about movements or in house movements and most of those opinions are just parroting what they read on a forum one time. It’s really not that important if it’s relatively accurate.

You should buy the design that speaks to you the most.

I'm not really a huge fan of Homos but i have to give them credit for actually making properly sized watches. They have a surprising number of 35 and 36mm pieces. I also like that they have a nodate option for most models. Too bad about the whole comically long lugs thing. I'd say the minimatik is the best out of their current offerings.

i think is looks kind of interesting. people value symmetry up to a point, but nobody wants a completely symmetrical watch do they? it would just be a circle with identical markers and no text. I believe that symmetry is just one component of the abstract term 'balance' (possible the biggest component, but i am not a designer or artist so i dont know). Kind of like how you want a high level of symmetry in an attractive face but completely symmetric photoshops of people just look weird. In this case I like how the roman numerals are mirrored about the longitudinal axis of the watch and the added weight and visual interest detracts from the small seconds register, which i slightly too central on the face owing to the small caliber.

Water resistance is tricky and deceptive. Water resistant to 3ATM means 30 meters. Only 1 ATM is sea level and all the ATM measurements are tested in still water, when you're not doing anything. 100M water resistance is considered fine for light swimming but unless the watch has a screw-down crown it could still get water in it, and then humidity and vapor and stuff like that can get inside your watch when normal water might not.
If you're going purely by the text, 3ATM sounds good if you're not going to take your watch straight up diving because water should be kept out even during a swim, right? But in actuality it could mean that a rainstorm or a particularly humid summer can damage your watch. Or you could fall off a boat and nothing could happen at all.

This isn't even close. The Seiko looks like a SARY055 which is far more tastefully proportioned albeit with slightly large lugs and could have stood to be 39-40mm instead of the 41.5 that it is. The chemically blued hands are much better than the standard finishing on the Tissot and the day/date is executed much more elegantly. The finishing is also superior.

I'm sorry Sinn is an absolute garbage and aren't worth half the asking price. Don't take my word for it, go Google a quick AB test on Sinn vs. X Swiss Brand for 5 min and you'll see how disproportionately Sinn watches have issues either out of the box or early in their lives. The value proposition is even worse now because they've been cucked by Swatch Group over ETA movements and are now putting in throw away Sellita movements without being honest and upfront about it. It's a clone only in architecture, you have the entire value chain that affects the end quality and Sellita is no where near ETA, not for another decade. But hey if you still want to buy a Sinn because validation from Reddit and anonymous Burmese underwater basket weaving forum feels good, go for it.

You're talking out your ass friend. Sellita movements are plenty reliable and Sellita literally manufactured the ETA movements for ETA for decades before establishing their own separate line of clone movements. If you have lower end ETA prior to 2003 there's an almost 75% chance it was made by Sellita. I don't know why you think that there's some major shortfall to them when major Swiss luxury brands (like Oris and Tag Heuer) use them interchangeably with ETA movements depending on platform and availability.

Shit like Seiko and entry level garbage like LONG JEAN and ORIS are just advanced coping mechanisms to avoid the truth: you're a loser and everything that went wrong in your life is your own fault. you could have gotten everything you wanted, including a Rolex, if you tried a little harder. you're not even catastrophically bad in a way that might give you some fame, no, you're just mundane, boring, average, standard. there's nothing that makes you special and nothing that makes you worth being loved. whether you're an "alpha minus" going through $500-$1500 watches by the dozens or a shitter hoarder seething at people who buy mechanical watches, you're the same: a fuckup. not due to some great external factor like kikes, niggers or drumpf, nor due to some internal plight like having acne or depression or tfw to intelegent to socialize. there's a dozen steps you could take right this instant to lead you to the life you claim to want, but the truth is the life you really want is the one you already have, wallowing in mediocrity and making sarcastic quips at anyone who shines a light on your inconsistencies. millions of high quality timepieces are out there, and all it would take for you to get one is the right amount of dominance, the right amount of presence and the right amount of stability. all of you have it in you. but here you are, saying "fuck that shit I'll just get a seiko lmao", as if living life was an effort and as if being a slob was any better. cringe t b h

What even does that do?
Of course it's useless for about any user, as is the whole 200m waterproof thing, but that seems useless for the people that actually take the thing diving.
As far as I understand it, it's to let out the He that's in the breathing mixture for really deep diving. But how does the He get to your watch? Your mouthpiece is in your mouth, so there's a meter of water between your watch and any free He.
The only way I can think of to get the watch exposed to He is if you're in a dive bell. And that's like less than 1% of all divers this applies to.
Please redpill me about He excape valves

Basically, usually you decompress, but if you don't, there's a mechanism that prevents helium mixed with other gases that are trapped inside the watch to pop the watch from the inside using a release valve.

Helium escape valves are a meme that don't actually do anything. But they are included on "serious" dive watches because consumers fell for the meme and it's easier to just include them than to educate consumers that they are unnecessary. If you wear a suit you should probably wear a dress watch, modern standards for dress watches have changed, having a date feature was once a no go if you are wearing a suit. Something that is less than 40mm diameter, has a black or white dial and baton indicies on a leather strap, you can get a mall tier one if you arent an enthusiast, or you can do a bit of research and learn about the types of watches and the difference between movements and join in on the watch fun. What is your actual budget and what is the likely hood you wont wear it after a week, if you spent more you can recoup losses by better resale vakue, if you spend less than $200 there is a good chance that the watch is close to worthless after it has heen used and eBay takes their comission

He escape valves are for saturation divers. When diving in deep water you can't just send the diver down as their body needs time to adapt to the huge pressure, so they put the divers into a chamber on the deck of the boat and pressurise it slowly to the depth they'll be working at. Once pressurised, they enter a detachable part called the bell, which is then lowered into the water. There's a door in the bottom which they open and since the air pressure inside the bell is the same as the water pressure outside the water cannot flow in. They do the job, get back into the bell, and get lifted to the surface where they reattach to the chamber. Saturation divers can spend a week or more in the chamber, going down in the bell to do more work and then back up, eating, sleeping etc, pressurised the entire time. Once the work is finished they will decompress the chamber, and here's where the He escape valve comes in. At pressures this high, many gasses like nitrogen and even oxygen itself become toxic so the divers are breathing mostly helium (>300m they even need to switch out the helium for hydrogen). After spending a week under pressure all that helium will work it's way into your watch and equalise the pressure. Once you start to decompress the chamber the pressure differential between inside your watch and out will cause the crystal to pop out, which is why you need a way for the gas inside to escape. A long winded explanation but I though some people here might be interested in how sat diving works.
Pic is what happens when you open the door while under pressure

Not thanks for the pic. But it does illustrate the point.
So I was kinda right with my dive bell and 0.001% of those few that take it diving assumptions. But I didn't know those details about the pressure chamber at surface level. But the whole thing totally makes sense. I'd assume those are "technical divers" or whatever you call them, working with oil rigs underwater and whatnot, but certainly not your average boomer diving around the Bahamas or something.

Thanks for the info.
The white dial looks great, now the lume matches the mcdonalds logo and everything.
I'll add an ebay alert, probably wont find it, but this is the ultimate double sign dial.

Well the only watches left on are ugly ones then, people like watches for aesthetic. Popular models are popular because they look good.
