What makes a mechanical tool watch more durable than a dress watch if they have the same movement? I'm talking about shock resistance not water tightness? Is it something in the case? Or is a tool watch basically just a waterproof steel dress watch?

case construction, if it has a proper depth rating, what the crystal is made of (sapphire, hardlex or whatever) tho I'd say largely negligible if it's stainless with a closed caseback
I think some watches have shock absorbent movement holders as well
a fair bit is wank

>> No.15210761

That watch is very classic and simple, the wave pattern on the strap is actually kind of weird because it bulks up the look of the watch and the heavy curves take away from the watch itself which has more of a subtle curve and clean look to it. The strap I linked is a vintage-style tropic strap based on the rubber straps that came with the original Seiko divers and I much prefer them. They have more holes and texturing under the strap so they're a little better ventilated. They have a great texturing that enhances the look of the watch without being too noticeable and taking away from it, they are slimming because it's just a simple strap without a big 3D scrunchie thing near the lugs, and I prefer the silicon keepers because the metal keeper that comes on premium Seiko rubber straps are scratch magnets.
It's less than 20 dollars, I guarantee you will not regret it.

Here it is on my Seiko Monster.
I also have smaller wrists. Those stock Seiko diver straps just add too much bulk. Visually, it's like the watch is much bigger. A regular straight strap is better. The texturing adds some interest while the black color means it's not loud enough to overpower the watch so you can soak in its tasteful details.

I think you're right about that but most decent silicon straps will be equally comfortable, so long as the quality of the silicon, the thickness, and the design are right. Hima's take on this type of strap is slim but not too slim so you get something very comfortable.
You could also look into getting a nice leather strap too. Purists will cry that you can't put leather straps on dive watches but a lot of them look damn good with a leather strap and it would let you wear the watch more formally.

Have had this baby for a couple days now and I haven’t had a shred of the buyers remorse I had expected. It wears very well. The polishing which I expected would be tacky, is quite tasteful due to the brushing on the bezel and the matte strap finish. The STN display is readable. This should satiate me for a long time until I can afford something truly mature and grail-like.

seiko 5 snk809 is a good sub $100 start. hamilton field khaki is a nice choice in the $500 range. you'll probably want to pair these with a nato or zulu strap. brands to avoid are the fashion shitters like invicta, bulova, michael kors, daniel wellington etc. just be careful not to go overboard with collecting. better to stick with one watch for each occasion, that is, get a beater watch (digital casio), an everyday watch, a sport watch (dive watch) and a decent dress watch. if you're like me (casualfag) you can skip the dress watch altogether.

What is the general consensus fashion wise on wearing the watch on the inside of the left wrist? I do it because I work with my hand often and it allows me to tell time even while holding a tool or material. Also I like that I can very discreetly look at the time without the tell tale gesture of holding up the wrist. Indicating you find the current company boring.

Well I personally worked in technology specifically smart phones. Who in the actual fuck wears a watch when you have a phone. Until I needed one for a new job s to tell the time since the smart phone was banned from being out. In that time I realized how fucking much easier it was to look at a watch then fish for a phone for the time.

After that I noticed that if I wanted to tell the time before I had to make the incredibly obvious and rude motion of getting a phone out while sitting. Or the trade mark wrist flick. Inside the wrist let's me tell the time at any time without any indication I am using it.

One of these is not like the other. And anyone who pays full price for Panerai is either a fool or spends disposable income. Never heard it being a grail. You can get damn-near perfect copies for within 1000 bucks, granted, not in the endless variants they shit out constantly, but the basic models. There is no reason for Panerais asking price other than "they can", just like the rest of SWISS MADE memes.

You got this shit off some article, when you know damn well that if you have your hands on the table, it takes but a glance to tell the time on a watch worn normally, nobody is looking directly in your eyes constantly. The other reasoning is more sound, but if you hold stuff in your hand, I think you are even more likely to ding it worn inside.

>> No.15211002

>>15210991
Hands at rest more often then not end up with the wrist facing inwards. The act of twisting your outer wrist towards your face is an act anyone with a functioning pair of eye balls can tell you are doing on purpose. Also it is preciously why I wear it on the inside while I work. I can tell the time without stopping what I am doing or losing an arm during a function.

If you think I am lying go a day with wrist in and see how much more discreetly easy it is to see the time with no abnormal movements. Or while carrying something or working with your hands above your shoulders.

How insecure do you have to be to feel bad about checking your watch, when people pull out their phones randomly, even mid-conversation?

Regarding your work, I think is highly subjective, I put glass panes on stands and carry shit all day, so watch-in would get inevitably fucked up, or worse, the metal would scratch up the product.

In the end, if it works for you, who am I to judge, we all have our preferences regarding watches, I like mine to be very light, for example, I hate "wrist presence".

Fair enough. So with a modern dress watch its basically water resistance and a screw down crown? No additional shock protection? If you had a "dress" watch made made of stainless with a screw down crown and 100 m water resist it would basically be as tough as a dive watch for daily wear? Obviously not talking about actually diving where the additional pressure resistance is important

cant go wrong with seiko 5s as a 1st watch, they are basic mechanicals and they get your toes wet

keep in mind they are automatics with no winding though. So you would need to wear the watch almost every day (you can go like a day without) to keep it powered, or shake it a bit everyday/ buy a watch winder. Its not a big issue, but that depends on the person.

>99 brit dollars/ 120 usd

Normally watches do two rounds a day, this only one, so that would be more confusing since it differs from how most watches work, no?

Not too sure about why it has AM/PM, apparently a pilot was complaining about his Tissot GMT being not up to the job in ~1950 so Glycine designed this watch as fool-proof as possible. At least that is what I read about it. But nowadays it's just for styling I guess.
