>The compass bezel is used for finding NSEW just by using the position of the sun abd the hour hand, theres a tutorial for it.
I thought so, but why bother?
That method isn't that accurate that I would need a bezel that I can use to point exactly at 247° or something. If I know where N is,then I also know where NSEW (and NNW, NW, NWN, W and so on ) is, since that is just logical and you can't get more accurate than that.
I mean, how do you do that? Point at the sun, and then you move your watch to adjust it, but in such a way that you absolutely not turn it even by half a degree, and then you adjust it, and then you move it again (without turning it, of course!) so that you can get a bearing on whatever you need to go to?
I don't really feel it…
But yeah, of course it's a fashion piece, so it's not like this really matters, but unlike say, the tachymeter and telemeter on my Strela, I doubt that this bezel had a real use during its heritage.

>> No.15190603

Springbar bracelets are a fucking meme, and it's honestly harder to adjust them than it is to adjust one held together with pins. Not to mention all the losses in terms of potential durability.

Depends on the type. There are two types, the garbage ones you get with shit like leather straps where there's an open slot cut in the end to support a non-removable quick release, and the great ones you get on some metal bands where there's a closed slot cut in the back and the quick release bar is removable with a screwdriver, which allows for a closer fit with the watch body and no ugly groove from certain angles.. The former creates obvious weakness and looks ugly, the latter is just as strong and just more convenient, with the main issue being that it has to be built into the design, and it becomes slightly fiddlier to change straps because you have to put the bars back in.

Did you guys know a WOMAN invented the wrist watch? Well, kind of. Breguet actually made it but it was at the request of the Maria Carolina, Queen of Naples, in 1810. Speaking of, where do Tag Heuer and Longines stand on the tipping scale? Both have some thicc heritage in name to fall back to, but have been since watered down quite a bit. Which handled it worse? Tag still keeps their prices skyhigh for what they are(nt).

Tag is almost two watch brands. The lower end stuff is no better than Longines (I don't care for their styles personally but there's no accounting for taste). Their high-end experimental stuff (tourbillon, mikrogirder, etc) is an entirely different thing, drawing on their LVMH membership with Zenith et al, and has some very nice stuff at very competitive prices.

Is the Sinn 104 a fucking shitter?

It's my dad's birthday soon and he's expressed an interest in it. He has another decent watch but he's getting old and can't read it so well anymore. The 104 looks pretty decent but $1500 for an ETA shitter is going to fucking hurt.

I've been watch shopping with him before, and while he likes mid-tier stuff he's the kind of person where if I buy him a Rolex, Breitling, Tudor, Omega etc. he'd simply never wear it out of fear of scratching or losing something so "expensive".

Is there a best model of the 104, or something similar that's better for similar money.

Why dont field watches get the same love as dive watches?

surely people spend more time on land. Most people with dive watches dont even dive anyway.

>> No.15191886

Personally I don't hate field watches, but in my mind they are the generic standard watch. Dive watches have the allure of excitement, the possibility of going beyond the limits, the durability and water resistance are also exciting even if you never need them. Personally I would never buy a watch that doesn't feature a screwback and a screw down crown, just because I never want to have to worry about water damage.

For Jungle and arctic, I used my G-shock (because I didn't have another watch; but anyways, it has many of the same qualities as a dive watch), but for everything else on your list, my diver just works.

some of the fields watches look kinda cute, but from a functionality standpoint I don't get their appeal. I would go for pic related. Some weird diver x fieldwatch x WTF combo.

Dive watches are tougher because they typically have more water resistance, and the timing bezel really is a simple and useful complication a lot of field watches skip out on. Field watches also have an even more practical aesthetic which makes them less versatile. Some divers can easily transition between casual and dressy for all but the most black tie things. Many field watches play up the military aesthetic so they're not as good in the boardroom.
tl;dr dive watches and field watches both signify adventure and purpose but divers are more versatile in every way.

Depends on what kind of watch you are looking for but I'm a fan of some of these vintage style Chinese watch reissues from sea-gull like pic related. Got my square today, the screen is pretty small coming from an AE1200. It was also straight up unreadable as a negative display, maybe the newer B5600s are better because I hear they don't have the multiple layers of glass as an issue, but I was planning on inverting it anyway so it didn't mean much. As a positive display, I can clearly read it in a darkened room with just my monitor as a backing light source, which is about as poor as I could imagine conditions getting.

I picked up one of those titanium kits a while back from aliexpress, and the whole thing goes together perfectly and feels great on the wrist. The only problem is that I'm a wristlet, so the first links on either side do stick out a few mm, but it doesn't bother me as much as I thought it might. With enough links removed to fit around my wrist, the whole package is just 90g.

found it. hate is a strong word, they're just awkward the way they're worn in a non-sporting environment, IMO. rant:

> I dislike the unfortunately extremely common practice of wearing a watch with a diving bezel when not diving or at least sailing etc. I know everyone does it but it just seems really tryhard to me like "I'm the kind of rugged individual who might find himself thrust into a naval adventure at any given moment, gotta be prepared. I also have several multi tools I never use in my pocket and an ankle-bracelet made of Paracord: you never know." except they don't even have that stuff, they're a dentist or a lawyer, but yet they see no projection inherent in wearing a diver. I just don't get it. that said, I've always enjoyed the easy-to-read, uncluttered-with-numerals dial and hands of a diver. I guess I'm being contradictory but it's a separate issue to me.

[reply]
> Most people just wear divers because they look cool and are tough. The timing bezel is also the most practical and easy to use complication after a date window

[me again]
>yeah, I think the utility of the bezel is nice, and there are a few divers I've seen with really thin, understated bezels and I appreciate those because it's a concession to making an every-day, stylish-but-tough watch that is just a diver in name only.
>but a dive watch is a purpose-built, utilitarian style where everything is oversized and the bezel has giant teeth around it because you have to be able to see and grip it under water, your life depends on knowing at-a-glance how much oxygen is left in your tank and looks be damned. and most of the ones people buy because of your criteria (and yes, those are good criteria) still retain that super niche styling despite being for the casual market. that's my issue.
