My new baby-g bgd-560 is on the way, the true gentleman's square. The refined elegance, the subtle curves, based on the historical gw-520, a design dating back almost as far as the original g-shock. A watch design that's feels at home in the boardroom, yet feels purpose made for weekends on the yacht. I can't wait to own a true piece of horological history.

not the guy you meant to reply to, but i dont like watches that are too chunky and "machismo"? like those invicta watches which try too hard to be manly and aggressive and add all sorts of bevels and hard edges

dont like boring overdone design tropes either. So many divers try to look like the sub and it all blends together in hellish haze of sub clones and sub homages with all the same round indices and same old boring safe blue green black colours for the dial. STOP IT.

those big yellow divers from vostok europe are visually stunning, even though asking $1k usd for a quartz dinner plate is going a tad far. Wish more companies would try to be like that instead of going the same old safe route and try to look like a rolex sub

I'm not a very active guy on this board, so please, be friendly.

Summing up, I am just a poor brazilian guy that wanted a Seiko SNK800's series and can't afford one. I know it only coasts about $90/$100, but converting, it's about R$400/R$500 in my country.
Fast forward, this week I just encountered this (pic related), and feel like i found the perfect first watch for me. I plan to change the case to a chrome case in a similar 1330 module Casio's, if a found one. What do you guys think? Any options at $20 range?

When we talk about avaliability in Brazil, you could consider that nothing good can be bought inside the country. Every imported things avaliable here are expensive as hell due to taxes. Ebay is not an option due to the freight (almost the price of the watches), limiting alternatives to Amazon/Aliexpress.
Although, this Lorus is really nice and it's what I look for, a good alternative to Seiko's.

I've also found the Infantry 8541780338 watch and this MDC that I have never heard about, and don't really know what to expect about them.

I feel for you brazilbro, and thats a creative solution--

I think you can think about looking into chinese specials on aliexpress. AE often has big sales throughout the year, and you could get a cadisen/guanqin/loreo/starking at $40-$65 when the price drops. These often have seiko/miyota/inhouse movements inside that even handwind and hack (better than whats in the snk800s) and boast very good on paper specs, some even with sapphire crystal etc. Of course with them you are rolling the dice on QC and defects, but the odds are in your favor especially in popular models. I think its strongly worth considering.

ya in the value-for-money department the chinks cannot be beat at all. My only major personal gripe with them is that all of their watches are >40mm. Honestly if they just step up their QC game and make smaller watches with more original designs (like the quanqin GJ16034) they will put a fire to seiko 5's ass. >Sicura
>Ernest Schneider was the CEO of Sicura Watches until 1979, when he bought Breitling and became the CEO of the famed manufacturer. But the opportunity to lead Breitling was earned through the great success of Sicura, a brand known for following the trends, but doing so with quality at a price point that was accessible. The demand for dive watches was high from the late '50s through early '60s, and Sicura produced a range of watches targeted at the growing market. These watches were mainly "skin divers," which were a class of dive watches best suited for the light submersion that was typically associated with skin diving, which today is know as snorkeling. These watches featured a rotating bezel and a highly legible dial, but focused less on water resistance and more on affordability and accessibility.
Sounds good to me. And the design itself is great, if it works, why the hell wouldn't you, it's practically free.

You are getting a watch with an in house movement, in this case based on 50+ year old heritage designs and probably made mostly in house of in house parts for ~$200. They proudly advertise that they are made in China and are mostly produced for the domestic market so you are getting a product built to some kind of standard. Not all chinese watches are shit.
Hell, most of the swiss companies get at least part of their stuff from China.

These are actually pretty cool, same as the 1963. The 1963 was the first chinese made watch; they bought the movement from a defunct company (Which also used the exact same movement for early Breitlings, among others) then came the dongfeng, the first designed and made in china movement/watch,

Theres also Celadon or whatever there called which pitch as a 'proudly chinese' high end brand which makes some cool (but probably more middle tier desu) watches. Still pretty cool and it's not as common as your regular swiss fare.

The stock strap is pretty mediocre to be honest. That blue strap is a custom alligator strap from aaron bespoke which is very nice.

I ordered it with a blue strap initially but celadon told me they didn't have any so they'd send it on the brown strap right away then send a blue strap later. Then after 3-ish years of excuses, delays, then asking if I didn't mind it being the rubber/leather strap they made for the yue fei instead they finally sent a blue strap to me. That's not the strap in the pic obviously.

Yeah I've been looking pictures of the watch on google and I really like it so far, looks like its the 40mm model but for a diver watch the size can be expected, I understand the seiko skx0013 is a bit smaller, but that one's a bit out of my price league atm.

Why are heat blued watch hands considered such a premium feature? I've seen people heat blue parts before and it takes a second or two, it also seems like it could be automated pretty easily, yet heat blued parts are on much more expensive watches than ones with painted or chemically blued parts.

I'm not sure theres a fix for it, I remember going to a summer swimming school when I was in highschool, and I heard the teacher talking with his assistant, and he went, "there are some people that, no matter how much they try, they can't learn how to swim, at best, you can teach them not to panic immediately if they fall on a body of water, but when the stamina in their arms and legs runs out they won't be able to float normally".
I think I'm one of these cases, you see ever kids just floating in a pool with no major movements? Just lightly moving their legs and arms to mantain balance while they talk? Thats the one thing some of us can't achieve, I can swim for about 20secs in a stright line, but once I stop swimming I can't do the normal float and that tends to call for the panic moment.

I can't do that floating shit either, whenever I try to it uses way more energy than swimming, but I'd call bullshit on the other part.
Swimming marathons or doing a good and fast breaststroke? Sure, that's probably something not everyone can do (without insane amounts of training, at least), but some basic recreational or not-going-to-drown swimming? I can't fathom how one could not learn that within reasonable time and with reasonable training.
In fact, last summer I even learned to swim with a breasttroke, after not being able to do so for like 30 years. Still far away from good, and I think it's a retarded way to swim, but I can do it now!

Hold up, there's some guy here who wasted a few thousand bucks on something less accurate than a 10 dollar casio that needs to live in a fucking rotating prison overnight so it doesn't lose a few hours who has something to say about that!

In 50 years, maybe his watch will still be running! Yours will have needed a battery change, and maybe even a polariser replacement, for a total cost of 30 dollars. And all he needs is a full service every 5 years that costs more than your watch to keep his watch potentially functioning in 50 years, assuming no major damage like falling off his wrist onto concrete!

idk man. the watch industry is in a much different place now then it was during the glory years when all the classics were being minted. that said, collectors are a funny bunch and its hard to say. How recent do you mean? Some shoe-ins would be the lange 1 and datograph, seiko snowflake (even if you don't like it its impact has been undeniable for a newer watch), and maybe a nomos (probably a tangente with one of their more exotic movements). My dark horse pick is a version 2 seiko orange monster because it was cheap, ugly, unique, and pretty well made for the price. It seems like the type of watch that people will look more fondly at with time. It also had relatively low production numbers for a cheap seiko because everyone thought it was ugly iirc lol

Hard to tell because of trends, but generally there have to be enough people buying the name to care. Take for example that not many people gush over richemont group vintages. If any of the well liked microbrands ever go big, they will become classics. Unless it's CW.

Safe bets:
Strangely many seikos probably will. As soon as seiko makes a new movement that saves them even more money, everyone will wring their hands and complain that the old ones were good and better even if they were the ones complaining about 6R15s from the last time they pulled that stunt.
Any of the swatch group probably will have some staying power simply because of the name.

The dive watch (35 dollars) works under water (will post pics in a minute) and I didn't bought the ernest borel because in pictures it looked nice but irl it had an ugly yellow-looking patina in the dial that just wasn't my taste, instead I bought this other chronograph watch, it was quite a bargaining because he was asking for 93 dollars and I really didn't feel like paying that much for ut, so I offered the shitters that I bought on ebay when I was just starting into watches (a HMT that was dirty cheap like 5 dollars, a russian raketa and a swiss "royal" brand shitter) plus 35 dollars and it was a deal.
70 dollars both, pretty good deal for a chronograph and a diver both mechanical if you ask me.

Microbrand Shill here. Anyone else have too many that you're excited for to pick one or am I just too much of a consoomer and I need to take a break? Something about the scarcity and the massive specs per dollar makes them so much more appealing to me than similar priced pieces from major brands. For example the new Hamtun Kraken K3 that just came out today on Kickstarter is very tempting to me even though I really can't justify dropping $700 on a GMT because I don't really travel enough to make having that second time zone worth it to me. Nodus is also like a month away from the Contrail 2 and new Avalon and I'm much more attached to Nodus than Hamtun because Nodus does their own assembly and regulation in house to get much better longevity and accuracy out of fairly standard movements.

I'm kind of off the microbrand kick because half of the ones I'm interested in I never find out about until they're already out and then they're sold out everywhere and only available secondhand at like 200% of the price. That and I'd rather have like 5 or so solid watches than the 20 microbrand watches I want. There's just not enough wrist time for them all.

People here rag on all sorts of things for no real reason. The powermatic is slightly less serviceable than the base ETA 2824 but uses a better quality mainspring metal on many of the variants. There's slight differences in the lubricants that they use as well to match the materials differences but as far as I'm aware the only real reason to stay away from the powermatic is that it's new enough that nobody can really know the 5 year failure rate.

It's very similar to the SPT1-11 and the PT5000. They are both well built movements from companies that were used to manufacture ETA components prior to establishment of their own independent venture but they are both new enough that nobody can really know the failure rates beyond acceleration testing methods. There's nothing wrong with either of them and they're both better value for money on paper than either an SW-200 or ETA-2824 but nobody knowing the long term failure rates are what keeps smarter people away. There's always going to be morons who assume that everything that isn't either ETA/Sellita/High Horology are garbage just because of brand attachment (despite literally every high Horology brand including Rolex sourcing many components from companies like Swiss Precision Technology and HKT).

Take a heavy breather and a cold shower or five. Let the experience seep in a bit, look around, see what triggers your aesthetic autism and what you like, the more you see, the better of an understanding for your personal tastes you can develop (and thus have a harder time finding what actually ticks for you, but hey, searching is most of the fun, saving up and looking for the grail is the rest). You will most likely come up with a few very specific requirements, none of which will make logical sense, but a single pusher chrono with a thin bezel and 34mm diameter is just something you cannot apply logic to when looking to spend money on shit that will make you happy.

If your idea of a sub-homage is that it has a bezel and some of the indices are round then I guess you could call it a sub-homage. You'd also be completely retarded, but you could use that as your standard. If this is an homage to anything (it's not) it's much closer to a Yachtmaster than a submariner. Either way the Zelos Mako 3 is pretty far from an homage watch. The dials have a very unique Whirlpool texture and the overall design is nothing like a submariner.

Also, Zelos does offer other things and has done field watches (and is coming out with a manual wind Swiss made dress watch in the next couple months) but yes the divers are the most common market for microbrands (hint: It's because the most commonly worn mechanical watch is a diver so obviously brands are going to go for what men already buy).

The main appeal for the Hamtun for me is the hardened titanium and that I don't have any full lumed black bezel divers. I also don't have any GMT's and a Swiss made GMT under $700 is a lot better buy than pretty much anything you'll find from the major brands. Also, you're smoking rocks if you think the Kraken is a sub-homage. It has a very different look. The bezel isn't scalloped like a sub, the indices are chunky and rounded rather than thin and straight, the date is at 4 instead of 3, the hands are completely different and the bezel styling is different with smaller more spaced numbers.

I get it that you don't like divers, but you need to get your eyes checked if you think that the Hamtun K3 is a sub-homage.

But otherwise it should fit.

Watch some reviews, i think their quality is really bad.

Get this casio model. Even in plastic it's super comfortable and looks great. I have the mq-24-7bll and it's great, even for the cheap price.
Also try: Timex expedition scout, timex camper, and casios mrw 200 series.

The casio you want will have a very flat caseback. The metal casio case, (maybe you can find a broken casio and source the case from that) will have a higher sitting caseback. But on the pic you can see how easy the movement is and you can add spacers so it sits tight. Folded piece of paper will do the job fine.

Those watches will probably fetch you a couple hundred bucks in a year or two, or maybe even now. Service won't be cheap, but its worth it. Do research into who is a good watchmaker near you. Go on forums and ask about your watches after you do at least a little googling yourself. Be polite there and introduce yourself, it's full of boomers who want to feel superior about their knowledge. It has been said in some quarters that there is a Swiss patent from 1972 for the same idea, although I've been unable to find such a patent in the European patent database. However, a Jean-Claude Berney (et al.) registered a patent for the same idea: a generator whose rotation is driven by a mechanical gear train, and which is controlled by a quartz timing package.

The odd thing about the patent is that a priority date of 1972 is assigned but it's my understanding that this is a claimed date of origination for the idea; the actual patent was filed in late 1973 and not granted until 1976. And in an additional twist, Berney himself wrote in this untitled paper from the late 1990s that the idea was "first described" by him in 1978.

Berney worked for ETA/ESA. The patent in question (CH1691872A) is owned by ETA. It was filed on November 21, 1972. Seiko's spring drive patents (many years later) cite it.

I don't know what this garbage is about it being filed in 1973. Perhaps, as is quite common, Hodinkee has no idea what they're saying.

You were right anon, after a while the glass started to get all foggy and it got me a bit scared, but hours laters and it still works, I also opened up the caseback to check if there was water in it but no water, just fog on the glass. I saw your post too late sadly but at least I wont be putting it in water soon until I get it checked. I also plan on replacing the leather strap.
The strap on the chrono wasn't the best so I replaced it with a new one that I had lying arround, I'm not sure it suits the watch but its gonna be a while until a new strap for it arrives.
I forgot to mention that when we were bargaining he also gave me a red dial cornavin sort of like "c'mon is a good deal, I'll even give you this free watch" thing. A little research tells me cornavin started Swiss but then moved to Russia. Still, I'm not sure its really my taste so I think I'll just sell it.
I can't upload pictures right now because its night and my phone sucks at night photos, surely tomorrow I can deliver good pics.

Casio is a no-brainer that everyone serious about watches should have a look at.

The ALS is goat and the first to get out of the 3 expensive ones you posted. Though instead of the new 414.028 you should also consider the original 403.035 Datograph.
They go for the same price currently and the date window is a lot more beautiful in person than it seems on pictures, you also get the old style balance wheel with balance screws that I much prefer over the new setup.
Only "downturn" on the original dato is really the 36 hour power reserve compared to the 60 hours on the model you posted but you'd likely wind either watch every day anyway so it shouldn't matter too much.
I'd get it if you want the 1815 for purity reasons though.

The Calatrava travel time is an extremely cool semi casual pick next to the dressier LF and ALS.

Not sure how I feel about the LF, though that might just be due to personal preference, I'd probably go for a chronomètre contemporain as a dress choice instead.

All around good choices breh.

brands like ALS and GS are far better value for your money than most swiss brands, especially on secondary markets.
Guess it comes down to personal taste though and people also want to pay for "history" and brand identity.

There is.
There is value in material, labor and branding.
Sure some of these brands make fantastic use of artificially restricting supply and racking in ridiculous profit margins but 90% of them are just scraping by.

Homage watches are fine and there's plenty of well built affordable homage watches that are worth it. Replicas are a different story, not because of some moral opposition or anything but just because you can almost always get a better homage watch for whatever money you'd put into a fake. A steinhart is a much better way to spend $500 than a well built rep and will work for a lot longer with a real warranty and the ability to bring it to a watchmaker without the risk that they'll destroy it for being a counterfeit good.
