You might be able to get one of the CW watches or a quartz seamaster used for that much, if you're really diligent and lucky. There are solar seiko watches out there, but they look pretty similar to the automatics. Then there are the "not seiko tunas" which are technically larger but have a smaller lug to lug than others.

My favorites are probably Nodus, NTH, Zelos and Hamtun but there's a ton of really well spec'd and constructed watches out there. Helm is fantastic if you can get one, Raven is great also. The weekender is loud. You'll hear it in a quiet classroom at your desk. People may comment that sit near you.

The expedition scout is quieter. In your room, you'll hear it if you rest your chin to your arm or you don't have a fan going. I can't sleep in the same room as my scout (I keep it in a watchcap in my closet).

The expedition field military (no chrono) is the same as the expedition scout.
The expedition field chrono is very quiet when not using the chronograph.
The weekender chrono is likewise very quiet.
So typically, chrono = quiet. Seemingly everything else is middle-high volume."

really depends on what you want, im assuming you want an analogue watch and not digital

if you like the look of it and arent pursuing value--at that price (<$50) its not that bad i guess, it works

desu there are better field watches but they are also more expensive (marathon, bertucci, hamilton, luminox etc)

at $45 for the timex if you top up another $30 you can get the seiko SNK 800s, a popular 1st mechanical watch.

also at $45-$55 if you dont mind playing the "chinese specials" game you can get actually kinda decent quality chink-made mechanicals from AE at around that price. This is a QC gamble though and more for people who arent 100% unexperienced with watches

do you want quartz or mechanical. The former is far more casual and doesnt require the same sort of upkeep. A quartz watch is what most people think of when they think of watches, and will always be far more accurate than almost all mechanicals. Quartz watches are always good to go, you can chuck it in a drawer and only wear it once a week or whatever. A mechanical is more like a pet that you bring along and have to attend to it, either powering it by wearing it or winding. But many find its tiny gears and springs more "romantic" and worth paying the price for.

The timex ex. scout as entry level quartz watches go lands somewhere in the middle of the pack. It is brass with a basic quartz movement, from a well known brand with a classic design. It'll likely serve you well until the battery runs out. Personally if i want a field watch I'll prefer to find one that has a steel body at least, or even titanium.

Soap and other abrasives aren't good for your watch anyway. Assuming you have a metal bracelet, because the rest will get eaten away by moisture over time, you're still going to be stripping off the valuable coating of skin oil that keeps your watch smooth. You can rust out cheap pins, too.

The only solution is to buy a watch you don't care about like a 10 dollar casio, because you will always baby something you spent too much money on.

Why do people want watches to be heavier and more bulky for no appreciable benefit? A screwback has one advantage, it'll be less prone to stripping after a few dozen removals.

But how often do you actually remove your caseback? Is it even reasonable to assume that anyone who isn't a complete hamhanded moron will ever manage to strip screws going into resin? And if you do somehow manage to fuck it up after 50+ years of use, it's not hard to epoxy the hole and re-drill.

Maybe on a 2 year battery life watch, you'd want a screwback. But on a 10 year? Or a solar model? It's just bulk. Personally, I wish casio would offer premium models with titanium casebacks, and threaded inserts to hold the screws. It's an extra few dollars in terms of production cost, but it'd create something that's just objectively superior by every possible metric, instead of having one minor flaw that no normal person is likely to encounter unless they buy vintage watches from the 00s in 50 years.

Some models look interesting, some even halfway well made, but there is always something lacking in the design. My interest in steel cased screw back digital watches isn't rooted in any inherent flaws of the newer stamped plate attached with screws methods. Obviously Casio has no problem making 200m water resistant watches with the new methods. I just like the screw casebacks. It harkens back to a tine when a digital quartz watch was made to a different standard than they are today. I'm sure the market of people that watches like I'm describing but wouldn't just get a screwback g-shock is tiny but I still would be happy to spend $200 or $300 on a modern 100m or 200m WR marlin with it's slim classic sized case. In the end I just bought a g-shock since I can't be assed to spend $500 on a NOS marlin filled with old dried out gaskets and sitting on a terrible folded bracelet.

Yeah, that's essentially what I was trying to say, but maybe I worded it wrong. They are not a descendand of the real Junkers (an old, German airplane manufacturer) or Zeppelin (an old, German airship manufacturer that now is an engineering company that also does ONE airship), but just a random brand that bought rights to the names.
Haven't seen Messerschmitt though.
Doesn't necessarily make them bad or something, but it's a bit weird, but oh well, 80% of the watch market just lifes of marketing and stolen valor, so you can't really fault them. And it's an OK midpriced quartz watch, so if you like the design and know what it is and is not, I'd say it's fine.

Hideous, and hopelessly out of date.

I imagine anyone who bought a steel square is seething these days about how any idiot with a screwdriver can make one for under a hundred bucks. And you can get a titanium square for under 200.

I'd honestly rather buy a 200 dollar STN panel square, or a 400 dollar 5610 with a MIP screen. Sadly, the first is part of their "premium" range, and the latter is never getting made without Bluetooth. These 500 dollar turds appeal only to idiots.

My phone can, which is what my fucking smartwatch is connected to anyway to do all the heavy lifting.

It's a device that's completely unsuited to the wrist. In a few decades when we have fucking screens implanted under the skin and they run off ATP so you just have to eat another chocolate bar a day to keep them running? Then maybe a smartwatch is a good idea.
