But it's a tourbillon. For under $1000. And according to the people who've bought one, it keeps fine time, and/or can be regulated or adjusted into a good range. It's fucking tempting because I will never be able to buy one for 85,000$ starting...

Also wondering about this. I mean, if it's not a sub clone, no one IRL will even notice, and it's not like you can simply buy the original and wear it as a daily driver, so ethically speaking, I'd say it's OK, but it still feels kinda weird. And then there's the issue of quality. The steeldive you posted (also >>15153330) always have fantastic reviews on aliexpress, but well, aliexpress reviews…

Poorfag here, hi. I wear a cheap subclone unironically because it's less retro-counterculture than my Vostok. Both have timing bezels, which is genuinely useful for timing e.g. when to change an action camera's battery. Extra extra water sealing is also nice because it explicitly lets me not give a fuck about bicycling through a summer shower and getting my wristwatch wet.

They're actually not rebranded AliExpress watches. They do come from a HK supplier but they aren't any of the main AliExpress brands. His islander honestly isn't bad. The lume is pretty good and the construction on my 38mm Pepsi was better than I was expecting. It feels more solid than an SKX013 (though it's also more expensive than an 013 was before being discontinued so that's not super surprising). Definitely not a bargain at what he sells them for but better than most of the Parnis/SanMartin/Pagani design/Heimdallr in terms of build and finishing.

50m of water resistance is not suitable for any sort of swimming and really shouldn't be getting wet outside of occasional splashes/dips. Look at any photographs from their factory. Literally the only thing you will see is movement production. Compared to Vostok, which has photos and videos of cases, dials, hands, and crowns throughout every step of the process.

I can't speak for the Polar specifically, because it's a limited run they may have produced it locally or domestically, but they absolutely do not have the equipment to produce entire watches at scale, only the automatic movements. They even stopped producing the manual wind movement because it was too much to produce both.

Their CEO has alluded to such, that the current facility is tiny compared to the past. That equipment fell into disuse and was scrapped or sold for pennies. This is not much different than most brands that just slap ETA's in a Chinese case, but I support their efforts to be unique and independent once again, even if they haven't reached that point yet.

this (illogical, to be fair) association is from several -thousands- of years of human history where gold (heavy) and silver (heavy) are used as currency and valued.

So aluminium and titanium feels 'cheap' to our lizard brains even though they are many ways better than iron and steel. Plastic (resin) is another superior material but thats dirt cheap to make. The weight and presence of a steel watch just feels good.

No, it isn't. That shit doesn't even make sense, you wouldn't be naturally inclined towards heavy things because of that.

You like heavy things because you're a brainlet. Lighter materials are generally associated with poorer strength, because heavy materials are far cheaper, and so you won't generally find shit like appliances and furniture made out of titanium. If you can read a spec sheet, this stuff isn't an issue.

Titanium is half the weight of steel while being so tough it destroyed all the tools watchmakers had previously used to machine steel for decades. It's objectively superior and it being nearly weightless for its looks should inspire amazement at how far we have come to even have this miracle metal, not disdain because it's not heavy enough so it feels like a toy.
No wonder this industry is so mired in the past and slow to evolve.

They have a very low magnetic resistance which does not seem like a big deal, but many watches these days, even cheap autos, have a baseline magnetic resistance. This does not. Your shit can get magnetized going near the mini-fridge at work and then it's going to gain a minute a day or something. the recessed crown is actually both too small and too recessed, so it's annoying to use. lack of hacking and hand winding really fucking sucks too, that shit is so baseline now. there is also a LOT of space in the case so you hear the rotor just shaking around like it's broken even when it's not, holy shit that's the worst thing about this watch, the rotor is so loud just jangling inside of there.
the strap is also really heinously bad so you will end up ripping it off in frustration and getting another one within a day which actually adds to the price of the watch so you can't even justify it as being very cheap anymore. it's not a good watch in this current era which is sad because aesthetically it's a 10/10

Because I dive. My seamaster is my secondary, my Suunto is my primary. That's the point. Furthermore, the dive extension on the bracelet is actually correctly sized for a wetsuit.

That being said I don't begrudge anyone from wearing a diver...they're cool watches that can take a beating.

It’s the resin strap. I figured it’d be worth the fiver just to see if it’s tolerable. Might get a mesh down the line.

the rubber one? I've only ever had one so take this with a grain of salt but it's actually passable. not very supple but better than the really cheap stuff so there is some measure of quality there, and they're decently comfortable.

Dumb question but why does yachting need its own weird complication? Whats so specific about yachting and time? Couldn't a normal watch do what you need?
