OP is demonstrating how to correctly use bracelets made out of a natural material to shield the harmful electronic fields that a quartz watch produces. If you absolutely HAVE to wear such a thing instead of a more natural mechanical wristwatch, that’s you you minimize its harmful impacts on your chakra.

Currently saving up for my first "grown up" watch, i'm leaning towards an omega seamaster 300m with the white dial.

It'll be my daily watch, what do you guys think? an Alternative would be a sub mariner around the same price but it'll be on its last legs lol

I do like this, i'll add it to my list. it's classier and its in a similar price bracket on the grey market.

Think I'm falling down the homage rabbit hole, lads. Been looking at chinese brands' takes on e.g. black bay and flieger (with entry-level Miyota movements, which turns me off), as well as weird 43mm submariner homages with supposed NH35 movements for sub-$100.

Are any of these decent to at least Invicta level, as in, worth wearing unironically? Or should I just stick with my Vostok, because the chinese homages will only get better in a few years' time.

>> No.15139132

>>15139080
It really depends on what you're looking at. I've heard good things about Parnis, Pagani-Deseign and Loreo in the under $100 price point but you're basically getting the same thing from any of these brands with only slightly different quality standards. If you absolutely have to do that, go for it but I think you're a lot better off saving up an additional hundred for a Seiko/Orient or spending $300 and getting a properly built homage from a brand like Phoibos or Deep Blue or something.

Yeah, I'm getting the impression that if my Invicta runs well enough to not have to dick with every week, then it's a fluke in the cheap homage category and that quitting while I'm ahead seems a good move. Thanks for the other brand refs, looking at catalogues certainly beats spending on frivolity during uncertain times.

Yeah divers aren't generally my thing, I'm more interested in chronographs and dress watches. The seamaster specifically though has just never spoken to me. Something about the design looks too cartoony.
I get what you're saying about it being too sporty as well. Too many people get caught up in the diver-as-a-daily mantra, but assuming you work 5 days a week you'll be wearing your watch in the office far more often than on the beach. The OP has a "literally anywhere" aesthetic and is the perfect daily imo but you could also save some cash and pick up a nomos club or a longjeans or something

Definitely. I was about to go dump some money on the new Gin Clear Diver from Second Hour but now that I've been furloughed indefinitely I don't think spending that money is really worth it even if the specs are really solid for the money. It's one of those things where it's so easy to get all worked up over FOMO for something that really doesn't matter in the long run. Window shopping is probably the best way to go atm unless you're really seriously in love with whatever piece you see.

Same boat, confirmed in february already because of supply chain uncertainty (thru China) and demand uncertainty (because of others' supply uncertainty, thru China). Remote or not doesn't make much of a difference. Spose it'll be a while until I'll have a hundred bucks in my toy budget again; and the chinese homage watch (sapphire glass, seagull movement, snowflake hands, etc.) is going to wait in stock until then.

Barring eurozone inflation of course. Which could happen, except that every other big player seems to be doing equivalent pandemic-resuscitation stuff already, so it might even out as well.

Window-shopping has made me like the other alternatives less. So that's a way to window-spend fewer window-eurobucks.

Literally buy a $20 lume kit off amazon, mix in a tiny amount of brown watercolor paint to match color, and paint the back of the hands with a small paintbrush. Capillary action makes the lume fill in the gap perfectly. Easy.

It's always fascinating to see the mentality of the kinds of retards who buy objectively dogshit automatic turds and try and justify it as an "investment". The value of a watch is about the same as the value of diamonds, it's an inherently low value product, obsolete in many respects, but thanks to marketing there are a lot of idiots out there who think that there's something wrong with quartz.

I have the same level of respect for a man who wears an automatic as I do for a man who wears a bracelet. By which I mean, I have no respect for a man who wears an automatic.

If you absolutely must waste a few thousand dollars on jewellery, at least buy something as functional as a 10 dollar Casio.

1. Their history and how it's a shame they don't use tuning fork movements anymore, albeit for understandable reasons.

3. The Bulova Curv where the actual movement is curved and the whole thing wraps around your wrist.

What do you want from a $200 dress watch? The bracelets from similarly priced Seiko 5 dress watches are not exactly anything worth writing home about. Obviously you just have some weird hatred against lower priced watches but I'm sure it's not a bad watch if you spend $30 on a good leather strap for it.

As soon as stinky chinky gets over the pandemic and develops (or acquires from elsewhere the IP for) proper lume, a reputation of durability for Seagull movements, and branding that doesn't sound like a slantie's third-level piss-take on euro naming stereotypes. Then they'll be making better clones than the real thing -- but only if wait lists, a multiple kilodollar price tag, and other such bullshit are considered.

As for when S.C. starts competing with refined european and japanese watch designs: fucking never. They'll have their next cultural purge before that, eliminating continuity. Even Taiwan can't into that, for some reason, and they've mostly avoided the mainland bullshit.

Apple is not a watch company. They make nasty consumer electronics that are outdated in a couple of years, then they'll have you buy a new one.
Nothing but furthering the amalgamation of man and technology into a soulless appendix of the emerging Borg. The apple given by the snake!

A watch is a work or art, a tiny mechanical wonder connecting us to the starry heavens above. Quietly telling us our position in relation to the sun, the great life giver.
This nowadays seemingly insignificant achievement have helped us to accurately calculate advanced formulas that have led to the innovations that, engulfed with the Faustian spirit, enabled us to fly like Ikaros himself and reach for the stars!
And you want to equate that to a dumbed down mini computer mostly used to send poop emojis and bastardized spelling. A watch indeed.

The lust can be controlled by anyone, but watches are more than their expense. Engineering, reliability, and aesthetics are the main points. Heritage not so much unless you're re-selling.

I'd put the threshold at a bit higher, since 3.95 will only get you shit that you'd have to replace in short order, so it's probably $10 or whatever that iconic Casio shitter costs.
And yeah, if you're that rich that 200 or 20k is all peanuts to you, it probably won't matter, but dude, for most folks there's a middle ground! Like 200 will really only affect the poorest folks, whereas 20k, that's something even middle class should not just throw away.
Can I buy me a watch for 20k? Sure. Will it negatively affect my life right now? No. I'll just have 20k less on the bank that I don't really need. However, this 20k less now will also mean about 50k less in 20 years, assuming an average return of 5% and nothing happining where I might need that 20k RIGHT NOW, so, I'd rather not.

20K is definitely 50K less if you don't save it in the future, but will you live to see that future? Furthermore, will it matter? It's the same thing people ask themselves when they get married, or if they buy that car, or get that mortgage, or whatever. It's all the same...it's what you can enjoy in this lifetime before it's too late. I'm tno saying be reckless iwth your money, but I am saying that justifying luxury spending is uselesss because th emaning is moot.

Day-Date - try it on. The modern one looks fucking amazing in Gold.

Patek, Breguet, and Journe require a good long look into their ouvre. I've found a few that are amazing, but it's rare, as the general aesthetic isn't one I like.

>Furthermore, will it matter?
well, 20k can get me a lot of stuff that'll bring me more enjoyment (or utility) than a watch, so I'd opt for that. Plus, those 50k will help my kid to get a better start at life, so there's that.
>it's what you can enjoy in this lifetime before it's too late.
But I'm already enjoying my life! The only thing missing currently is being able to go out (both as in out and meet friends, and out for /out/ purposes) and a watch won't replace that. In fact, I bought me a new shitter that literally arrived 3 days before lockdown started and I kept it wound in the first 2 days of lockdown and then I just put it into a drawer, because, for what purpose?

Fair enough..
Good luck Euroanon...I used to live there, glad I'm not there anymore. If you have a kid already, good luck with that too...it's fucking important to set them up for success. Train them well.

Sorry about the new watch though being in a drawer...I wear mine in rotation, even in the lockdown, because I enjoy them all. But I'm old.

Good eve, dream well, and try on the damn day-date (you'll be surprised).

>for teh love of the art,
What art? Most people here own mass produced garbage. Hand assembled? My shitty phone was hand assembled by some chink, does that make it art?
>the technology,
I'm sure that over the years, the humble washboard went through many stunning adaptations. From rocks, to glass, to metal. And some of those facets are still preserved today in the construction of washing machines.

But nobody in a first world country looks at a washboard and thinks "man, I need one of those!".
>the ingeniousness of mankind
Pure grandstanding. Quartz, and electrical engineering in general, are far more ingenious than clunky mechanical motion.

Watches aren't art. They're jewellery. I know this board is for "men" who wear skinny jeans, but you might as well buy yourself a diamond ring and a necklace, faggot.

But there can be some art in jewelery. Pic related probably could be considered such. Not saying it's good, but it probably fits the bill.
Oh, and I'd totally like a glass washing board, now that you say it.

Kinda agree, but if we're going the "classical"

way, instead of looking at the message, then (mechanical) watches with (some) hand assembly are definitely art, since there's a shitload of skill and beauty involved.

Thank you. Maybe a little bit and that's ok. The Molequin straps have a 'water resistant' lining to counter that as much as it can. On very hot days I'll wear something else on steel, nylon or rubber anyways.

I don't think hand assembly is art, it's basic skill. You don't jizz yourself every time you re-assemble a engine block, do you?

Is it fiddly work? Absolutely. But what was impressive a hundred years ago, isn't that amazing now. If you're buying a one-off hand manufactured custom movement, like https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xp_jjDCov0A , then fair enough, there's skill involved in the design and production. But for your average rolex, it's just the same basic bitch design with some very mild improvements over the decades. The only skill you're paying for is the fucking engraving, you ponce.

watches are art. if you cannot appreciate the technology, innovation, history, and craftsmanship of a mechanical watch, then youre an idiot plain and simple. the art of a mechanical watch is in its design and in the watchmaker's expression of technological skill in mechanical engineering

Have you ever looked at a watch movement? That's way more than a basic skill. And unlike an engine that has an actual purpose, a watch doesn't reall yhave one, so I'd consider it art.

I know zoomers just use their phones these days, but watches are for telling the time. Automatic movements are terrible for telling the time. It'd be like owning a fucking grandfather clock instead of a 2 dollar wall clock.

That's what I'm saying, not sure why you felt the need to add some more detail to my point.

They aren't magic, but this shit is complicated! I can work with most mechanical stuff, but watch movements, that's just another level and much more difficult than your basic ass car engine.

Get something that's a bit more robust like a Boldr Venture/Expedition or if you've got more money an Archimede Outdoor or something if you actually are planning on going Innawoods with a mechanical watch instead of a quartz/solar. While Hamilton makes decent watches and their field watch design is classic, the low water resistance rating and lack of a screw down crown are not the best for real /out/ shenanigans.

There's still a shit ton of them online for under $400 and you can get that strapcode bracelet fairly easily. The new 2020 alpinists are also not unreasonable (though more expensive and better finishing/movement than the SARB017) and a lot of retailers will let you choose whether you want it on a strap or bracelet.
