15117721 No.15117721 [Reply] [Original]

I recently got my B.Ed and will (hopefully) have a job teaching next year, otherwise I'll be subbing which is also fine. All of my contemporaries wear polos and khakis and generally look like dogshit. What are some fits that I can rock in a secondary school and not come across as try-hard?

Pic related is the look I'm trying to avoid, and the build I'm working with.

used to do what you’re doing in my 20s
now I still ride a bike but long distance in country side (from your pic I guess you live in France) and hand drawing architecture and landscape with only one ink pen

How formal are you willing to go? I slap a blazer over an ocbd most days and I'm considered the "sharp" guy at school. But honestly? If you do rock the polo khaki combo make sure you're wearing good quality stuff. A sunspel polo will look immaculate next to an old Navy or Uniqlo one. Also what's classified as secondary? I've been in kinder for like 10 years now so idk anything else

wear what you'd wear on a regular Saturday, maybe a casual button down instead of a t shirt, generally the more you look like a dad, the better. In the winter do fleeces and solid color sweaters. If you want people to take you seriously, save the stylized and "/fa/" stuff for home. Just focus on being supportive, kind, patient and flexible with the students. Good luck!

the best and most popular teachers at my high school were the ones dressed like plumbers or white people at a bbq, the ones who dressed like fags got bullied, not cause of their clothes, but cause they happened to be douche bags and the way they dressed was just more ammo to harass them with.

I'm qualified to teach grades 7-12 social studies and english. Ideally I want to teach high school, but if I got a full-time offer for junior high I'd probably take it. I'm willing to go to the higher end of formal without being try-hard - right now I'm poor though so a fitted grey suit is really all I have that would fit that.
>>15117768
Thanks for the encouragement, my dude! I tend to feel better and more confident when I dress up, which is why I'm trying to go a bit more formal - there are obvious first year jitters that I can mitigate by feeling I look the part, ya know? Also my greatest fear is losing the room so I believe a more formal look than the basic teacher look would lend itself better to establishing myself as an authority figure.

>Also my greatest fear is losing the room so I believe a more formal look than the basic teacher look would lend itself better to establishing myself as an authority figure.

I'm a middle/highschool (our education system works differently here) teacher for a couple of years now. And my experience is that if you "dress up" and are not completely yourself in your outfit, the kids will immediately see it as a sign of weakness. They might not pick on it (depends on the kids though), but they will feel your insecurity. I've seen the most badly dressed teacher connect perfectly with the kids, or subdue the most rioting class.

The only things in terms of dress that I would consider are the following: Be generally clean. Neat hair. No bad breath, or offensive body odor. Dress clean and neatly as well. Avoid looking like your students. Plain shirts/pants sneakers or shoes, no overtly visible brands. What style you pick should be one you feel comfortable in. That's all that matters. True confidence is key here.

And if you honestly look like pic related, I think it would demand more respect than a suit. These are horny kids, remember.

Bit tight for teaching. Remember you'll have to reach up to write on the whiteboard. You don't want your shit to ride up, most schools will want you to tuck your shirt in anyway. For some reason there is a crazy double standard where men have to suit up to teach and women can wear leggings and t shirts. Try not to be one of the tryhard fashion teachers and just wear nice understated clothes.

I'm sure this is area dependent, but I sub, and teachers generally dress casually (e.g. a school branded shirt and casual pants). I've worn everything from a sport coat and tie to a flannel and jeans, and unless the administrators mention dress, it probably won't matter what you wear.

>>15117842
I appreciate the advice, my dude. My wardrobe right now is pretty bro-tier so what I'm most comfortable in (t-shirts, henleys, denim) is a bit too casual as is. I'll find something a little dressed up that I'm confident in, I'm sure. Also I am the dude in the OP so I want to cover my physique a bit to de-sexualize myself.

If there is one thing I've learned from getting a job is that you should let go of your dreams of being that /fa/ guy from the movies who combines business casual with making women wet on the spot.
I just wear mainly loose fit polos and such now. You just don't want to dress too offensive, it's not something you want to be known for. And the polo in the OP is definitely something which coworkers et such will talk about

/TIP/ fag here. First of all depends on where you’re teaching, if you’re teaching kids in the ghetto they’re going to respond differently then white suburban kids. I wouldn’t recommend wearing a polo, it gives too much of the body away and I think it drags away at your authority. I would say straight fit (or the equivalent for your body type pants) a tie maybe once a week or two, an occasional blazer over an open collar shirt, take advantage of sweaters. In a business casual environment I feel like this a good happy medium for dress code. I am into classic menswear (and went to a parochial highschool with polos in warm weather and ties in the winter, where all the males teachers had to wear ties) but in terms of clothes= respect I thought the teacher who best executed it was the football assistant coach plus AP physics teacher who wore black or khaki pants, blue or white button down colors and taste fil cosnservative ties, he was a big guy and his clothes didn’t always fit perfectly and he was a bigger guy but his clothes commanded respect to me.

I teach in Texas, so I wear polos and ocbd button, in short sleeve as well when it's not winter.
Fit is King since you can't wear crazy shit. I wear my clothes fitted since I'm not fat.
I would say my kids don't care too much about what I wear. They like my orange polo jacket and my Jaguar pace cologne, but at the end of the day it has minimal impact on my teaching. Setting procedures and not accepting anything less than your expectations is where it's at. Good luck. My first year was brutal but my second year right now is 100s of times better because of what I learned.

It was a guy (grindr) and he started by sending nudes and getting dirty chatty. Honestly I wasn't paying that much attention and just send a pic of my own. Suddenly he asked if I was his teacher last year (Luckily I wasn't working at that school anymore). I found out who it was and said I really didn't feel comfortable at with all this. He told me he just wanted someone to be his "mentor" in gay life. Which I understand, but me being his ex teacher and he sending nudes was just too much. On top of that he's 13. I deleted my profile though. He later send me a message through linkedin to get in touch again. Told him the same, and he said he understood. He even asked if he could contact me again when he turned 16 lol.

Really felt like I dodged a bullet there. If this had come out, and I still had been working at that school, there would have been no winners. I probably would have had to quit.

I’m well liked by the kids, you’re not trying to be friends with all colleagues anyway and I don’t see anyone giving a damn here either. Maybe this works different overseas but here it’s 99% how you treat the students and maybe 1% how you look. I definitely agree that being clean and well groomed is much more important. One substitute guy didn’t shower once and was forever known as Mr. Smelly. I’m not joking.
We do have a try hard that wears business casual but since he’s an arrogant maniac nobody likes him. I don’t think this would be different if he wore anything else

You've gotta keep in mind that first year is gonna suck no matter what you wear. Hopefully your collegues will be willing to help you with that.

Other than that I can only jump on everything guys said:
1. Shower and do your laundry, brush and take care of your teeth. Your smell means a lot, it connects to people's memories.
2. Pay attention to your haircut. It doesn't have to be especially fashionable but it has to be neatly groomed. Back when I was started teacher I used to have that "cool undercut" but it took too much work to maintain. Now I just buzz my own hair regularly, same level of confidence while saving lots of time and money.
3. As time goes and you get better at what are you doing you start to notice your students copy your style. Right now, at the start of the road your appearence mostly matter to your collegues. Later it will be students dressing up the same way you do, get similar watches, glasses (and ditch the glasses for contacts if you do so) and so on. That would be the time to actually pay a close attention to your wardrode because you're becoming the living archetypical image of "male" for your students.

I do remember a lot of my classmates who took math classes were actually not taking as many pure mathemarics classes like I did, since their program required other teaching courses instead.

I don’t necessarily want to teach math either. I’m just wondering how much demand there is for teachers and if they’re perhaps flexible with hiring.
