In the beginning there was a huge initial panic spike because people didn't know if this was an incredibly rare watch or not and they didn't want to miss out. But now after the initial wave of panic buys, most people have one because it was a common and popular watch for years, Seiko probably made a shitload of them, and most people who wanted one have them by now. Same goes for the SKX, you saw them shooting up to retard prices but now they're coming back down to a reasonable 250-ish even for the rare JDM models because that watch has existed for so long and there's so much NOS.

Grand Seiko has the highest level of finishing and quality control in watches today without getting into the super high end luxury stuff. Their watches are quality stuff and have amazing value for the price. The issue is mainly that once you are dropping >5K on a watch you run into a lot of insufferable dumbfucks who will shit on you for buying a Seiko because they think all Seikos are Seiko 5s and they're still butthurt about the quartz crisis, or they harp on about "muh Rolex muh Rolex it holds value" like that actually matters when you're spending 5-10 grand on a watch
The only REAL problem with Grand Seikos is that they're kind of big and their design language is a somewhat strange mix of sporty and dressy, but that could just be because Seiko has different design language from Swiss companies in general.

>> No.15107661

>>15107640
Well if you don't care about it being mechanical you can get a vintage Seiko quartz under $150 or so, the seiko 5 automatic if you want mechanical, also pay attention to the size, maybe 40mm it's too big for your taste.

i'm willing to spend more if its not too gaudy im only in my mid 20's I dont need a rollie like my dad and dont want to ask for one either

>> No.15107953

>>15107946
Why the fuck do you need a precious metal watch when you're 25? There's no point. The average person will think it's fake or not care, and people who know what those watches are will either think they're fake or that you're some rich little piece of shit who didn't earn it. You won't get a solid gold watch for 1000 dollars anyway. Give up.
Getting that out of the way, if you want a watch I suggest you go look for one yourself, take the time, and find one that speaks to you, otherwise you're just wasting your time and money. If your watch doesn't make you smile every time you look at your wrist there is no point.

If you don't want a watch then don't get one.
If your family is making a big deal about you wearing a watch for some reason, there are a bunch of different blue dial watches. Strap is irrelevant since you can buy whatever strap you want aftermarket. You should also consider what style of watch you want. If you want a diver there's like a zillion options. If you want something dressier I've always been partial to Seiko's Presage line which has a bunch of neat blue dial watches, like the blue Cocktail Time at 400 dollars, to the Shippo Enamel dial at 1400.

For me, it's the Gruen Ocean Chief.

I found this one basically NOS from the mid 60's. Of American origin, Gruen was one of the top watchmaking companies of the mid 20th century. In fact, Rolex was not sold in North America until the late 1930s due to a partnership with Gruen and the movement manufacturer Aegler. Gruen also had a Swiss subdivision that produced quality watches into the 70s.

The Ocean Chief has a spotless in-house automatic movement, unique glossy gilt art deco dial, snakehead hands, all in a beveled, waterproof 38mm case.

Mine keeps perfect time, and paired with the comfy NOS Bestfit Tropic strap never leaves my wrist.

Do you know what gold costs? Especially currently? Add two zeros to that price and then you can start.

But seriously, golden watches are really hard to pull off. Either go full on no-fucks-given mode with something totally outlandish (pic related) or get an old dress watch, back from when normal men wore golden watches unironically.

Indeed I do. Funny though, since I'm living in the mountains, far away from the sea, but I still like diving watches the most. Besides all that rough style and attitude, they're genuinely the most useful everyday watches. Generally robust enough for any land based activity you can think of and the dive bezel has a lot of real world use for me. Rarely use my chronograph for timing, but my divers bezel gets used all the time, since in everydays situations, 2min give or take don't matter and the bezel is much easier to read at a glance.

If this Powermatic movement you guys are talking about is the same one I'm thinking of, that's the movement that basically collapsed my faith in the whole watchmaking industry. People do nothing but shit on the Swatch Sistem51 for being soulless planned obsolescence but then that retarded Powermatic movement came out in a Tissot for 1000 dollars and everyone was sucking 50 Swiss dicks saying it was the most brilliant and incredible and revolutionary thing in horological history. Fucking retarded. Sistem51 is soulless mass produced trash, Seiko 5s are soulless mass produced trash, but the Powermatic isn't. An industry of lemmings

No, this is a common myth.

The sistem 51 movement (c10.111) can't be regulated. Its rate is set at the factory using lasers to adjust the inertia of the balance. This movement is also found now in the very lowest end mechanical tissots.

The powermatic (c07.111) is different. The powermatic (across all Swatch brands, including Tissot, Hamilton, and others) has adjustable weights on the balance arms that can be used for regulation. It is a free-sprung balance, so regulating it is more complicated that just moving a set of regulator pins, but a competent watch maker could certainly do it.

People here hate everything so don't get super uptight when you post stuff and get bad responses. If you post micros or independents you get shit for wasting your money on shitters and literally who watches.

If you post Rolex/AP/Patek/Omega you get shit for buying Reddit-tier normie watches. If you post VC you get shit from delusional trannies who think their logo is a "Nazi symbol". If you post GS you get shit from people who think that spending 5 grand on a Seiko is something only weebs and retards would do. If you post lower end Swatch group or sub-2k independents like Stowa/Sinn/CW you get shit about "Muh China Made". Pretty much the only things I ever see posted that don't get more negative than positive responses are sub-$200 Casio's and Citizens. I don't know a lot about Seiko's higher end, but I've never seen anyone with a Marine Master who didn't absolutely love it. Bruce Williams on YT considers his Marine Master to be better than any of his Swiss divers except for his hulk which he spent almost 8 times as much on.

Maybe Seiko's high end is garbage, no clue. I've never bothered to look into it. I would be fairly surprised if that was the case though considering how large of a following Seiko and Citizen tend to have on forums dedicated to their higher end pieces.

The OCD never stops. Even with something like titanium, who knows what's in it, and you absorb these materials through the skin. Silicone bands, that's definitely not pure silicone.
