So I've been working on a project to take an amplified piezo microphone from a weishi 1000 timegrapher and hook it up to a basic digital oscilloscope to measure watch movements more accurately. Most oscilloscopes, including this one, have more accurate and stable timebases than cheap timegraphers, so they're suitable for measuring more precise watches, including high-accuracy quartz pieces (the spec for the weishi 1000 is 2spd). Here you can see the oscilloscope triggering on a tick of a basic swiss lever escapement. You can visibly see the unlock, impulse, and drop/lock components of the sound.

15086711

>>15086705
Proper cable shielding and placement is really important to avoid noise that obscures the weaker parts of the signal. For instance, in this diagram, the amplified microphone is being driven off of a DC signal generator that was letting some 132KHz noise leak through, presumably from some switching power supply on the same circuit. The signal cable from the microphone to the scope also formed a large loop antenna, introducing RF-range noise, as well as crossing over a mains cable, introducing 60Hz noise. Both of these resulted in a significantly worse signal.

>> No.15086717

>>15086705
Neat. How are you hooking up the mic to the scope?

15086728

>>15086711
Here's an example with an accutron 214. The signal is considerably less well defined due to higher-order harmonics in the watch signal. You can see the pulses come at the proper 360Hz, but there are two peaks per pulse. My assumption is the tines are somehow out of phase with each other, possibly due to debris on the tines (since the regulators on the tines appear to be balanced).

>>15086717
Very simple. The microphone has some kind of mini-DIN connector with three contacts. Two are for DC power (around 9V from a 9V battery seems to do, since I was getting so much noise from the DC signal generator). The third is the signal, which at zero sound is halfway between the VCC and GND. I use AC coupling on the scope to throw in some capacitance to bring the mean of the signal to 0V instead of 4.5V, to allow more precise measurement. The actual connection is a basic 1x BNC scope probe.

File: 1.92 MB, 4032x3024, osc-720-01.jpg [View same] [iqdb] [saucenao] [google]
15086739

>>15086728
Here's a measurement of an Omega 720Hz tuning fork. The signal is even noisier than the accutron, so instead of trying to trigger on it, I trigger on the 1KHz test output, triggering once every 125 rising edges (resulting in triggering 8 times per second, which divides into 720Hz evenly). I then take an average of 64 observations to draw the waveform. The 720Hz period is very obvious, as are some higher-order harmonics. The average signal drifts to the left by about 500 microseconds per 35 seconds, implying an average rate of 2.5spd, though I need to actually measure to see whether this is the actual watch drift rate or a drift in the 1KHz test port.

Oh so you just straight up touched the probe to the signal pin and ran some wires to a battery for power? Straight forward enough. I do happen to have a rigol and a weishi 1900 sitting around so I might just do this at some point.

It's very straightforward. The pins on the female connector on the weishi microphone are even numbered. With the dimple on top, pin one (rightmost) is +9V, pin 2 (lower pin) is signal, and pin 3 (left pin) is GND. Yes, I provided power just with some alligator clips attached to a 9V battery.

>> No.15086787

>>15086760
Now I'm just wondering if I could design an adapter box & 3D print it with male pins for the mic connector, a battery compartment and a BNC cable output so you could just plug it right into the scope. I assume those standard DC adapters like what comes with the weishi are too noisy as well?

>> No.15086803

>>15086787
The DC adapter in the weishi is a switched mode power supply and puts out a decent amount of noise. I'd suggest just having a compartment ofr a 9V battery with a 9V controller. I also got a lot of noise just on the circuit in general, depending on what else was plugged into the outlet.

They have totally different moods. The Datejust is dressier because it has a simplier color scheme and a more flashy bracelet. The Black Bay has a warmer dial because of the gold and red but a more tool watch aesthetic overall with the faux-riveted bracelet and large hands. If that's the older Black Bay I think the watch has some funny proportions, it feels larger than it seems like it should be and the bracelet is kind of chintzy compared to how far along mainline Rolex bracelets have come. You should try it on in person. No experience with the new Black Bays though I hear they're perfect.

Demonstration of beat error. The scope triggers 10 times per second (so the right-hand signal is the tick, then the tock, then the tick again, etc., and the left signal is vice versa). you don't have to dive. most people with chronographs will never need to time anything down to the split second. it's just weird to see a chrono dive watch because it's combining two different aesthetics. chronographs are supposed to look busy and precise and almost elegant with their complexity. dive watches are supposed to be simple, rugged, bulletproof. mixing the two is just strange.

Found a scan of a service bulletin for a rare transitional Timex model 62 movement. The model 62 was essentially a retrofitting of the model 4x series with a quartz timing package. The balance is impulsed by an electromagnet, and the timing of the electromagnet is controlled by an integrated circuit attached to a quartz crystal. This design was not very common, it was used only by a few manufacturers (Citizen and Luch come to mind).

The timex uses a very unusual quartz frequency of 49,152 Hz (as opposed to the much more common 32,768 Hz). The reason is obvious when you look at the frequency of the balance wheel (21,600bph, or 6 ticks per second). A series of 13 flip-flop circuits divides the frequency by 2^13, or 8192, which divides a 49,152Hz signal down to 6 pulses per second.

there are definitely people that are not responsible with their money, but debt and rent are kind of unavoidable for people in the US that dont come from a wealthy background

first you have to have college debt since you generally need college if you want a decent job (and unless your parents are wealthy you'll need to pay yourself), then in most of the US public transportation sucks so you need a car (which unless you have cash you'll need to finance). On top of all that, people wont even have the cash for down payment to buy a place so rent it is.

so in the end you own nothing of value and have a shitton of debt and rent that sucks up a good chunk of your income.

Omega was the first to develope a deep sea diver where you could operate the pushers at depth; the first iteration of the seamaster chronograph from the 1996 era, the precurser to the planet ocean chronographs and the one you see in >>15087865. You're also mistaken about the screw down pushers; they're screw down so you don't accidentally knock or damage them if they're not in use. I can agre ewith you, but the problem is that Anons aren't told about the wobbly crown and loose tolerances up front at all; it's a surprise on delivery, and then they get accustomed to it because it's 'their' watch and they grow fond of it. You see the same thing with anything from cars to pianos. People find a humane charm in a technological device because imperfection is such a mirror of humanity that they accept the flaw because it's like accepting a person or someone else (by extentsion accepting themselves).

I would never acept it because I've never bought a flawed watch, so if I did buy one I'd be pissed off. A mechanical watch is a piece of engineering; why waste money on something that should be reasonably fine out of the box? Semes like such a waste.

Have you?

>>15090231
Yes, it's inevitable. The assumption is that mechanical perfection removes humanity from things, and while you can argue that from an artistic standpoint (i.e. human created artforms like music, dance, painting, etc.) it is utterly useless when it's dealing with a mechanism that does something practical.

While I respect grand seikos, I hate their aesthetic design line, and like Zenith they will never appeal to me no matter how beautiful their finishing is. But watch snobs still don't understand that their opinions are actually valueless for the majority of the population and utterly wasteful to other watch snobs who think they're the only ones who are right. That's why I don't listen to them about aesthetic opinions...their lives exist in an ever closing circle of people who are likeminded in the strategy but combatative necessarily raison d'etre. They have no joy, and when they think they've found it someone else tears them down on just as easily quicksand as the target.

Like the first generations of the Snowflake had Seiko 3 TIMES on the dial which triggered my autism and the proportions were too big and sporty. I do want to own one because their signature heavily faceted hands are like nothing else in the industry, the Spring Drive is beautiful and functional, etc. but I'm holding out for the perfect one and none of them are clicking like that for me.

I tried on a GS, quite a nunber, and they all were dead inside...so I moved on. Let's be fair Anon; Lange have their faults like any other company. The swiss mystique has been lost for a while since the Chinese have been able to compete, and if one does historical research then it becomes how obvious the propaganda machine from the valleys is.

Every company has problems and advantages, some more than others on either side. Lange is by far the best of the German manufact. But the swiss are not indestructible...their reputation is though at the moment. Like buying diamonds for a woman for an engagement; even though it's robbery, no woman will be happy without it because of the societal indoctrination and the social pressure from those around her who are stupid.

I could agree with you on that, but what makes Lange win in my book is the infrastructure and numbers they produce over with an exceptional quality across the board. Even if you get a basic Saxonia or Lange 1, it's still excellent, no matter what. Obviously we could go further than that (F.P. Journe, etc.) but for mass production Lange is the top of the German line.

The Langes are an exception to the rule though; most integrated bracelets can simply be removed at the springbar point and you just put in leather bands of your choosing.

Go for Hersch if you're on the open market; word around the block is that they supply Omega, Panerai, and others, though us normies aren't supposed to know this.

>> No.15092246 [DELETED]

Orient is kind of cool. They are owned by Seiko but use their own in house movements and manufacturing. If you are into horology and the manufacturing aspect they do more of their own work than anything that all but a few if the very top swiss companies and for way less money. With how expensive Seiko is getting they are generally a much better value.

Orient uses their own in house movements and manufacturing. Seiko is rapidly becoming a much worse value for the money while orient is offering some very decent watches for good prices.

>> No.15092252

>>15092084
Because you get more value. Their movements are just as good, if not better because they tend to be better regulated from the factory. The quality of watches is the same as Seiko for less money. For instance the Kamasu is a cheap diver for 300 that has a sapphire crystal while Seiko is still charging 300 for fucking h a r d l e x
