Timex manufactures their watches in the Philippines. Shame tho, because SOME of their designs are nice, but the quality is shiiiiit.
Pic rel, amazing proportions, nice print, good choice of font and color combo, Indiglo, but ultimately the reviews state that the watch lasts but a few months.

I had a bit of trouble with my black PVD zulu strap; it's very stiff and its stitching scratched my wrist up, and it's not long enough to fold into the double loops a second time (so as to take all motion stress off the spring pins) without pressing on whatever is next to the bone on my forearm.

Their "seatbelt" nato strap ("deluxe") is quite good though, been wearing one on my Invicta for a few weeks now and while it's not as light as a regular nato strap, it has a different sort of comfort, like a seabelt ought to.

Rolex watches first have to pass ISO 3159 chronometer tests (as do Omega master chronometers), which are *stricter* than 12spd positional variance (though to be fair that's in 5 positions, not 6). Some prefer a watch that is more subtle- that in which the function of the watch is far more important the outward appearance. You have to choose based on the social situation you find yourself wearing one in.

This is where brands like Swatch come in; gaudy and unreserved. Sometimes I prefer bright watches like G-shock and Swatch for that very reason. Women notice it first.

That watch is neat! It looks like what astronauts wear, yet somehow even cooler.
I suppose subtlety is lost on someone like me, with my aesthetic tastes. I understand the utility of subtle watches in the past, but to me, they seem somewhat redundant in the modern era. Almost everyone has a phone in their pocket (and those of us who don't can ask someone who has a phone in their pocket easily enough) so watches are just... slightly more useful bracelets. You might as well go all out and make them as ridiculous and gaudy as you can.

Of course they are redundant.

The quality of the MN straps is...questionable. The straps themselves do the job well enough, but are too thin and thus feel cheap. The metal bits need a bit of handiwork to get the desired comfort level (bending on a tabletop to get a flatter angle so as to not bite into your forearm).
Otherwise they are a splendind and comfortable, just make sure you dont use them on a heavy watch head as they dont hold form well, meaning a heavy watch will pull the whole thing down and you will get uncomfortable wear with the band cutting into your wrist..
Also, you will get jewed tremendously, even when buying from yurop, as the fags change the price into burgerdollars and then back to yuros, leaving you paying for the exchange rate, even though they are shipping within the old continent.

Have a old, around 20 years I believe, timex that has some sentimental value. Wanted to add it back into rotation so I changed the battery after it being dead a long time. This thing can not hold time, since the last time I set it it’s now 2 days off or so. The problem has to do with the hands not moving or getting stuck sometimes even though you hear it ticking. Any idea what the issue could be, I know it’s a timex so it’s probably not serviceable at all, but anything I could try to mitigate the problem?

To be honest, I've talked to Omega technicians at Omega boutiques about it, and they were unable to explain what it meant. I also contacted both Omega corporate and METAS itself, who refused to explain the exact criteria. Omega corporate told me it was proprietary information. METAS told me to contact Omega (which is particularly weird since the whole point of the METAS standard is that it is administered by an independent organization, not by Omega).

There are three standards involved. ISO3159 ("COSC") indicates that the largest deviation between mean rate over 24 hours at full wind across 5 positions over 10 days at 23C and mean rate over 24 hours at full wind in any one of five positions over 2 days at 23C cannot exceed 10spd. Rolex's after sales service for a 3130 series says the max instantaneous rate difference across five positions at full and half wind cannot exceed 12spd (considerably tighter than ISO3159 since it is max vs min, not deviation from mean). Omega's criteria is unclear. My reading at this point is that it is similar to the iso3159 criteria but an instantaneous rate at full wind and across 6 positions. As far as I can tell there is no public information about what exactly it is, though.

>Deviation of chronometric precision in six positions
>In this test, the watch is placed in six different positions and its rate is recorded in each one. Out of these six results, the deviation between the two most extreme results (known as the delta) is shown.
Which is to say that the 0 - 12 second criteria is exactly the same as Rolex's 1st criterion maxiumum of 12 seconds a day for 31xx movements.

>> No.15066488

Though I should note that METAS tests across 6 positions rather than 5, but in practical terms that means almost nothing since both Omega and Rolex are using free sprung balances here and neither should have any issue passing this test in six positions. It's almost hard to conceive of a circumstance where an Omega co-axial or modern Rolex movement could simultaneosly meet the +0 to +5 SPD or +/- 2 SPD mean daily variation standard and yet have a spread between slowest and fastest positions of more than 12 SPD.

This is true, good point.
>Why? If the balance is poised correctly but not timed correctly, it's completely possible end up with a very precise but inaccurate watch.
In order for a free sprung balance movement to simultaneously have a mean daily variation between +0 and +5 or -2 and +2 SPD and also have a spread of more than 12 seconds between fastest and slowest positions would require high accuracy and low precision, as it would require large positional variations in rate that cancel each other out to reach a low mean daily variation.

Since free sprung balances have their rates adjusted by moving eccentric weights, adjusting poise and regulating the rate are done simultaneously by adjusting the positions of those weights, I think it would be pretty hard for a watchamer to use the eccentric weights to dial in the rate but also leave the balance so out of poise that you'd have more than 12 seconds of rate spread between the fastest and slowest position. How could the watchmaker not notice the poise issue?

>> No.15066550

I mean the opposite - it would be very possible for a watch to have a mean rate of, say, +30, but high precision across positions. I don't know why someone would *choose* to do this, to be clear - just that it's by no means impossible.

For completeness, it's certainly not the case that all free sprung balances use eccentric weights. Patek obviously does, as does the the new powermatic line from Swatch. Rolex's microstella system is essentially the same as the timing screws of early free sprung balances, as is, for example, Blancpain's, and seiko's newly announced free sprung balance.

Yes, of course that's possible, but doesn't fit into the situation I was talking about. I was saying that it would be pretty unlikely for a free sprung balance to simultaneously be *able* to meet the mean daily variation standard while also simultaneously failing to meet the standard for deviation between fastest and slowest postiions. I mean unless someone was deliberately trying to engineer that circumstance.

Well, balance screws serve the same purpose of allowing the alteration of the poise and rate of a free sprung balance wheel by shifting mass closer to or further from the axis of rotation. I would have thought it would therefore be reasonable to try and describe them under the same overarching term as the weights used by Patek, Damasko, and Swatch's Powermatic.

Yes, it's fine to have a watch to tell the time, but nowadays I rarely see anyone wear a quartz/mechanical watch. People wear smart watches instead and unless you have time to do the slide rule in your watch, it's more convenient for people to just use their Apple watch to calculate it for you.

It's really hard to figure out which one to get.
https://strela-watch.de/company/strela-history/
You would assume that the official website of the brand has some
>here is the watch you gotta buy
thingy, but no, they have a lot of (very interesting!) soviet space history, but it's really hard to figure out which watch it was. At the end they show a black one with luminous marker like picrel, but it's interestingly labelled in latin and from the seconda brand.

Only the black one is known, and even then it's an export model which is odd. Nobody knows which other ones were used.

The champagne models are pretty generic looking as far as vintage chronographs go, so I recommend either the black or white. The latest 40mm reissues with the ST19 movement are pretty spot on and are what I would recommend, while I have a white original.

High and low is the literal placement of the logo. Sekonda is an importer of watches in the UK, which used to source watches mainly from the USSR, but now China. Poljot is the brand commonly associated with the factory itself, while Strela is a brand only used on these watches and became their defacto name.

There are also a few variants not included in that image.

Hm, I think I'll go with the BBW (big, black watch…), 40mm for a chrono isn't too big I think.
However, from a keeping value perspective, should I get a a leftover with the Poljot 3133 calibre in 38mm (though only available in white, and I like black more) for ~€150 more, or should just get me the new one with the seagull movement? After all, it's a sub 400 watch, so it ain't really gonna become an expensive collectors piece anyways…
Decisions, decisions.

I do wear a mechanical while welding. I've never had a problem with a watch while using a lathe or a mill, or using any wood working machines but I also don't fear wearing long sleeves as long as it's a button down shirt with tight cuffs and the right length.

It absolutely is, graphic cherry of gore on top and all. And I'm also certain that I'm personally much more frightened of lathes and mills than the average working machinist, and that it's likely a non-issue for CNC operators. As for how much safer a wristwatch would be compared to always going to your pocket for a cell phone, seems like anyone's guess; I value my watch for exactly the reason that checking time off it leads to fewer broken cellphone displays in the long term (and also the cool factor of clockwork).

It's extremely nice.

It's a good looking watch, and the chinese movement is actually historically more fitting than the russian movement they had in it.
Plus, 400 is about the lowest price you can go for a mech chrono.
Just in the process of ordering, but now I found another issue. The latin one has a textured dial which looks amazing, whereas the cyrillic one doesn't. Fuck, what do I do now.

I have it, it's really great, you definitely won't regret it. Only downside is the 19mm lug, but that's bitching about literally nothing

If your going to one and done, I'd get the explorer 114270. Dont't get the op39, you want a sports model.

Superocean and black bay are nice but I'd take the speedy over them and I think they are better in a collection.

Drivers are heavy for every day, a nice simple no date sports rolex would be perfect.
