Is there something deep going on with big-brand perfumes and the chemicals they put in?

I used to always experiment with many perfumes that I liked, and would find around the house (my grandfather has many eau de toilette, etc, many from local artisans and made with fruits and herbs and stuff from around where we live), and I just went about my life.

One day I sprayed on samples from bleu de Chanel before going to a club. I didin't particularly like the smell but got a lot of attention from girls, even though I hadn't dressed particularly better than I usually do, and am a bit less in shape than I used to be because I haven't lifted since I finished military service 2 years ago.

It's ambegris not amber fragrance. Completely different thing. Ambegris in Colonia is salty in a refreshing marine way, leathery and animalic (not skanky at all though). Amber you're thinking of is warm, resiny smell. If you're looking for a contender then my fav ambers are Amouage Opus VI, Ambre Sultan/Ambre Lumiere.

However, when people say that this is just another generic fragrance that they've smelled before, I just don't get it. I have over 200 fragrances in my collection ranging from 10.00 to over 400.00 and I can say if Amouage or Tom Ford (private blend) had this juice in it, people would be raving about it. Is it the best fragrance ever, No. Is it the best mint based summer freshie for the money, absolutely. It's a well-crafted, long-lasting aromatic that would run neck and neck with the best of them. Seriously, for 20-30 bucks, you can't go wrong.

I got a relatively free weekend so I'm finally going sniff some new stuff and get some samples in London on Saturday. I'll visit Jovoy Mayfair to test some Profumum Romas and Bois 1920, Harrods to finally put my nose on these ridiculously expensive (£5700 per 50ml of some extraits) Henry Jacques and most likely Bloom to test some lowerkey niche. Does anyone want me to smell something for them from their catalogue? I can also pop in to Selfridges Les Senteurs at Belgravia, Nicolai, Arabian Oud or CdG at Dover Street if needed. Last time two anons wanted me to smell Iron Duke by Beaufort, Roja Sweetie Aoud and I still remember that. Any other requests lads?

Funnily enough I know couple of them as my current gf bought Herrera's Mystery Tobacco for her brother for Christmas when she was in Dubai. She got plenty of samples from this exclusive line but I don't really know names. Judging from what I remember scentwise they were likely Amber Desire, Burning Rose, Gold Incense, Oud Couture looking at the notes breakdown on fragrantica. All of them are very well blended and smooth but not groundbreaking. Typical unisex spicy/oudy/oriental 2010-2020s niche-ish inspiration taken from middle east that Serge Lutens used to do better a few decades before. Think Tom Ford Private Blends or Armani Prive. Good stuff for gifts as they're safe but still quite interesting. Gold Incense was my favourite of all of them, Mystery Tobacco second (probably because this patchoully-sweet DNA that I really like in many Jovoys). Most of them have very good performance - about 8h+ but I'm not really sure if all of that justifies the price. For £200+/100ml pricetag you can get way more interesting stuff. I'll give them a sniff in Harrods again though.

it's a great scent, but performance is shit, sadly. Like most of Jean Claude Ellenas.
I would also recommend Monsieur, a sensual rhum-patchouli, I'm making it my date scent. And I haven't tried The Night yet, but it goes for $1600 a bottle, so if you ever see it in a shop, try it out and let us know how it is.

Yeah, I have quite a lot of random cheap shit that's there just cause I like wearing it around the house sometimes and it has next to zero resale value like the Zara ones and a few other cheapies. Only like 30% I'd say actually gets regular use like DHI, Colonia Essenza, Naxos and GIT that are all on second bottles now. Other bits have just been accumulating for ages, it started with The One EDT and Cool Water back in 2013 and I'm on the fourth bottle of the latter now.

SOTD: Amber Sultan.
It is pretty good. It is a smoother and sweeter version of LDDM to my nose, which makes it more useable at the cost of complexity. It does have a tiny fecal note in there due to its amberiness, but since it is quite sweet people will not notice it.
It is also much less powdery than LDDM and thus safer to use in the warmer months if you care about that sort of thing. 4/5.

Sell them as a bundle on a facebook group. You'll get some money that way but foremostly clean up some space. Maybe it's just me but I can't have more than 10 bottles personally. Also, I forgot to mention that its performance is pretty good. 2 and a half hours of projection. Not quite fills the room, but people notice it. Looks like longevity will be good, but I am only 4 hours in.

>Amber Sultan
Good stuff. Are you sampling or got yourself a bottle? If the former then let me shill again Mollinard Ambre Lumiere. It's 90% similar to Ambre Sultan for a fraction of the price. It's really snice but I think I got bored with this amber+herbal bitter accord that one can find here or at Amouage Opus VI. I prefer LDDM to it by a mile now. Thinking of getting a bottle for the next winter once I go through my 5ml decant. If you find LDDM too sweet then you might want to try Au Coeur du Desert. It's like an older, grown up brother of LDDM. I don't find anything powdery in LDDM nor fecal in Ambre Sultan though (I think you might mean here the curry-like spiceness of it).

>> No.15024672

>>15024638

Yeah, I do that a lot already with single bottles, probably a third of what's there changes over the course of any given year and a quarter is permanent and gets replaced when used up. Didn't think of doing ones that aren't worth selling along as bulk though. I don't mind having so many while have the storage room for it at the moment, but if that changes in the future I'd probably cull everything down to the 20 I wear most and vintage/discontinued ones I keep purely for investment/future resale value.

I got a sample, but I can see this being bottle-worthy. I may check out ambre lumiere, as Serge Lutens does not have pity of our finances.
I can definitely see why you would prefer LDDM over AS. As an artistic creation, I think that I agree with you, it is much more exciting. I do find it very powdery, specially in the opening, don’t know how you don’t notice it. Even Ambre Sultan has some powderiness, but much more subdued.
> If you find LDDM too sweet then you might want to try Au Coeur du Desert
That is interesting. The sweetness of Ambre Sultan is justly what I think that allows it to be more wearable than LDDM. I may try Au cour later, but as everyone has described it to me thus far, I think I will prefer L’air.
The fecal note of both is in fact related to the spiceness, but not exactly it. I can get it at 2 moments in AS: right when you begin to sniff it, likely associated with the benzoin; and at the very end of the body of the fragrance, just past the spiceness. If I recall LDDM correctly, its fecal note was also at the end, but I cannot recall it at the beginning.

there's a story to be told. of good and evil. a cosmic schism, a wild funnel where the point of singularity, the final escape is only the beginning. the story is true and it's become a cold tale told in warm places. a story of the eater and the eaten. people speak of ysl. yes, they speak of the house and it's cherished, it's glistenings. of it's revered, always it's revered with that air of sophistication, of softness and care. something complacent and beautiful and has made a custom of turning it's back on it's wicked dealings, it's past it hopes to forget in the silence of death. this has become futile, because in the years since the tremor has only become more violent, and in these years they've learned to disregard the hunger. they've starved it but is doesn't die. it only becomes hungrier... and in it's place they've become a symbol of regality, of sterile streamlined luxury in a white room. le vestiaire des parfums they call it. simplicity and elegance. a swooning dance in sweeping silk on a bed of vapors... a dream even. all in vain because it's been fed only the best, and it's never known a want. it's slept ceaslessly, carelessly above the earth where at it's center spins in pangs of hunger and fury, of agony something brutish. they say it may come later. but later is now, the hour is now. it's been a matter of then but not now and then is now and now has been here forever... and they say to always remember that saying said only in the dark: "Tuxedo is the mother, Kouros is the wolf."

Quite based ngl. I cut my collection to 7 bottles out of which I hope to finish one designer bottle I don't really like very soon and be at 6. Regardless, I feel like cutting my collection further down to like 4 scents. These likely would be
>Spring
Eau Sauvage Parfum
>Summer
Xerjoff Mefisto Gentiluomo
>Autumn
Nicolai New York Intense
>Winter
MDCI Chypre Palatin
And possibly some small decants of special stuff for special occasions. Having a signature scent is such an alluring concept. It's hard to achieve though if you live in a place where you have more or less 4 distinct seasons, but having one per each season seems like a good compromise. The only person that I know of who comes close to having a signature scent rather resorted to a signature accord not fixing one fragrance. He opted for wearing iris heavy powdery fragrances: Misia, Putain des Palaces, some exclusive Grossmith London for special occasions and I gave him for one of his bdays Lipstick Rose by Frederic Malle. It works very well for him and he can change his fragrance according to weather/occasion/time of the day still wearing the same 'core accord' that people know him from (he's gay though lol). Sometimes I wonder if people actually notice that you're changing scents almost every day and if they perceive this as a strange thing to do.

That's another reason beyond ideal storage conditions that I keep them stored in a cold, dark cupboard rather than lying around. It's more like a distraction than a turn-off though. I had this one-night stand with a co-worker about year and a half ago and she spent the best part of half an hour fucking around and sniffing literally everything I had at the time. Worst part of it is she presumably brought and then started wearing Noir de Noir shortly after saying it was her favourite in my collection. Now I notice her wearing it whenever she's in on the evenings or night shifts so I couldn't really wear it at work again, sold it not long after.

It's a useful consideration about getting involved with eastern euro thots that are really into make-up/cosmetics/perfume. They won't just use your frags, they'll copy them and start wearing them too.

Typically the scents were off, synthetic smelling or lacking in performance. I've went through 50+ copies and maybe like 2 were actually worth buying.

This 2bqhfam. I’ve dabbled a lot in clones as well and at first I’d often be satisfied because I really wanted them to be as good as the real thing, but as I lived with them, I’d always inevitably be forced to come to the conclusion that they were pale imitations. Quite simply, large houses have access to superior materials. Clone houses aren’t using high-end industry-grade aromachemicals, they’re using whatever they can buy on eBay or amateur perfumery sites. Just isn’t the same thing.

Now, whether they’ll smell close enough for your individual taste is another matter entirely. Me personally, I’m just autistic about looking or smelling cheap.
