What's the deal with seiko chronographs? Are they better than 7750s?

Well, the 8RXX has a vertical clutch and column wheel layout, which is technically superior to the horizontal clutch and cam actuation of the 7750.

On the other hand, the 7750 is an integrated chronograph while the 8RXX is a modular chronograph built on top of the 6RXX.

From a functional and wearing perspective I'd say the 8R is better because it will have smoother chronograph activation, no stutter on the starting and stopping of the chronograph, excellent crisp resets, and the chronograph module will have much better shock resistance.

But it isn't as pretty to look at, nor is it as easy to service.

Spare yourself the trouble and buy a good tool with switchable tips, not the shitter tool you posted. The longer (pen sized) type is what you want.

But yeah, if you can't be arsed you can make do with other tools. Not really toothpicks and tweezers though, a detail (for electronics) flat screwdriver is usable for popping out spring bars from the side. For drilled lugs or bracelet adjustment any small needle or pin will do

>> No.15008869

>>15008867
The problem with those isn't the 2892 part. The 2892 is an excellent movement. The problem is that the chronograph modules they put on top of the 2892 are disposable trash compared to the chronograph module on an 8R. Sure the 8R won't be as accurate in terms of the running time, but to my mind the chronograph functionality has to be central to judging a chronograph movement.

>Ok, in what sense is your seiko 8r or 6a better than the speedy reduced movement?
1) The 8Rxx chronograph movement is fully serviceable, covered in Seiko's technical guide for the movement, and each part in the module is available for order. The Dubois Depraz chronograph module on the Speedy Reduced is designed to be thrown away and replaced at service.

2) The 8RXX features both a vertical clutch for driving the chronograph function and a column wheel actuaction arrangement. Both are technically superior to the horizontal clutch and cam actuation used on the DD 2020 chronograph module.

That said, the 2892 is a much better timekeeper than the 6R, so the Speedy Reduced has the advantage for keeping the running time.

>But the 8R movements are modular and will also probably get tossed out.
No. Seiko's technical guide for the movement includes servicing the chronograph module and they sell all the individual parts for the chronograph module. The 8R chronograph module is designed to be serviced, the DD modules are not. There would be no sense whatsoever in putting a column wheel actuation mechanism in a chronograph module you intended to be disposable.

>But those are missing things you say the 8R has like the vertical clutch.
Yes. And column wheel actuation. Both are superior to the horizontal clutch and cam actuation on the DD modules.

Why would you pick "the button pushing is a little different" over accuracy? It's not like either movement is that pretty.

>> No.15009625

>>15009606
Because I feel like the quality and functionality of the chronograph mechanism should have primacy over the running time in a chronograph. You are free to have different priorities.

It's not just a matter of the button to activate the chronograph being a little smoother. The lack of judder on engagement means the chronograph timing is more accurate. The vertical clutch also makes it much more resistant to having the chronograph timekeeping affected by shocks or G forces on the movement. The column wheel and tripple pointed hammer give an instant and incredibly crisp reset on all the chronograph timing hands. These are functional improvements in the stop-watch features.

Due to functional considerations I still consdier the Omega Cal. 1045/Lemania 5100 the best mechanical tool watch chronograph movement ever made, at any price, and a 2892 will definitely keep the running time more accurately than it will too.

Column wheel actuation is *one* technical aspect of a chronograph. It cannot be looked at in isolation from considering the type of clutch, the quality of construction, reliability, shock resistance, quality control, serviceability, etc. separately the extent of decorative finishing must also be considered where applicable.

Now you are talking about aesthetics rather than technical merit or quality. Aesthetics are a matter of personal taste. There are plenty of Speedmaster models I like, in fact I happen to own one, but many Speedmaster models have aesthetics I like so there would be no reason for me to choose one with a DD chronograph module over other movements I find much more appealing like the Lemania 5100 or the Omega 861/1861/1863.

>Sauce on vertical clutches and column wheels being better?
For vertical vs. horizontal clutches you should read this thread by a pretty well known watchmaker: https://omegaforums.net/threads/chronographs-vertical-and-horizontal-coupling.5539/

For column wheel vs cam actuation you can look at this: https://www.watchfinder.co.uk/articles/column-wheel

Keep in mind that while vertical clutches are strictly technically superior to horizontal coupline, there are times and places where cam actuaation in a chronograph can be a better choice than column wheel actuation. In Seiko's case, they have a long history of developing column wheel chronographs that are very robust and don't have the delicacy that some more high end column wheel actuated chronographs do.

You realize you have no fucking clue what you're talking about right? I know you have some internalized hatred of your country and your people, but America isn't some magical land of milk and honey. Socioeconomic mobility for people in the lower quarter of American wage earners is basically third world tier and for the second lowest quarter of Americans only 9% find themselves moving upward out of their income bracket within their lifetime. There are ways around this like not following the laws and working under the table, but if you're working in legal lower class work there is very little opportunity to be able to flourish to the point where even your Tissot isn't an insanely wasteful purchase.

Also, it says Average Wage a month. Not from one job or one person. A few passive income streams or another person and I would say that's probably about average. Otherwise why would anyone buy new cars? The numbers of people buying new cars, supports the idea the average person makes that much.

Casio MTS-100D is a better choice. At roughly the same price you're getting Miyota 2S60 movement and a sapphire crystal. The only disadvantage is WR50 instead of 100 and no screw-down back, but you don't need to care about the latter too much, considering that the movement has 10 years of battery life. If I buy a vintage King Seiko quartz will it keep decent time assuming the module is in decent condition? These things look great but I won't bother if they will loose 20 min a day or something.

I had a vintage Type II and it kept pretty much perfect time, the King Quartz has a more advanced movement so should be easily as good.
