For lack of a better term I called it "greaser T-shirt" bc I saw it often worn by people of this subculture. I think basically it's just a t-shirt (or is it?) with much shorter sleeves than we use to wear.

It's just a t-shirt, so can you even do sth wrong by buying it where ever in what ever type of material?

You are correct that the sleeves were more trim but you can get away with modern sizes. All you've got to do is tuck the shirt in and you're good. Check out Uniqlo's "U" line. I bought two of their white tees and they're pretty comfy.
