I just bought my first pair of chelsea boots and I'm not sure if I made a mistake.

I normally wear a 10, I sized down to 9.5 for these. I'm not sure if it was enough anymore since I'm reading the ankle part should be very snug, and it isn't really. I can fit most of my fingers in on the side before it expands. Despite that the overall shoe fits fine, no slipping around internally. In fact I feel that if I sized down to make the ankle snug it would make the rest of the boot cramped.

I got them at nordstrom rack so I'm not even sure if I'd be able to find a 9 if I went back.

I work in a thrift shop and got to handle some real Dr Martens today. As in pre-outsourcing made in England ones.
The leather was definitely thicker than the Made in Englands today.
They still had the classic cracking of the leather where the leather creases above the toe and under the laces.
A thing that surprised me was the soles. They didn't have that transparent rubber it was more of a solid matte brown colour and the treads didn't look very worn at all compared with how the leather was used.

Why are so many sites shit at color correcting their photos? I bought a pair of these boots from Barkers in their end of season sale after I saw a fried wearing them, but I couldn't spot them in the store for a good 10 minutes because the photo has turned the saturation up to 1000 making them look red when they're a sort of warm brown. Still a good deal though, £200 reduced from £485

A friend showed me the wonders of secondhand shoes on a local marketplace and I picked up 4 pairs in 10 days for about $1,050 in total.

Viberg Service Boots in color 8 cxl
Alden Indys in a reverse tobacco chamois
Alden 954s in color 8 shell
Carmina chukkas in saddle (natural) shell

Of the bunch, I'm happiest with the Vibergs. Super roomy and comfortable, to the point that I'm doubting whether I actually have the right shoe size for all my other pairs as they're all slightly tight to some degree of weirdness, almost to levels of discomfort.
The shells I doubt will expand any further from wear, but the chamois I'm having a shoemaker stretch out a bit to see if it'll work out because I love the look of it.

Pretty sure the Vibergs will be the daily wear because of how cozy they feel.
The Carminas fit okay, not too tight, but the shell they use is pretty stiff, I definitely feel it when it knocks against my skin.

The single monks have much more pliable shell but the damned last (Aberdeen) tapers so aggressively that the narrow toe box squeezes my little toe inwards.

Just super basic cotton Uniqlo jeans for now; I'll be grabbing a pair or two of locally made selvedge with some fancy denim fabric they bring in from artisanal mills in Japan in a couple days.

I've heard that RM Williams boots are like a one time purchase as they last for decades. I'm from Mexico and i've been thinking on importing a pair to replace my shitty chelseas that literally got destroyed after 6 months of light use. Thanks; got all these from local guys who shipped them in from the US.
Apart from the Vibergs (which maybe had 4 wears tops), the other shoes were used sparingly for 2 or 3 years then because they weren't the right size.
They all ended up unloading at really good prices on Carousell, basically a buy-and-sell site, probably to fund their next new pair.

How do I recognize good boots/shoes?
I got these on a sale for 60 bucks (like %50 off), of course I'm not expecting it to be handmade or some super amazing quality but it seems like it was just glued on hastily and not so well either.
I think the seam that is supposed to hold the leather and the sole is just rubber from the sole
