That's not what I meant though, it should still have a piece of the strap going under the case, so that it covers the lug holes. So like a normal strap but just with a double strap part that also goes behind/under the case.

The new ones have the powermatic escapement in them and should not be properly considered 2892 variants. I would consider the Swatch Group's description of those movements as "2892 based" as bordering on deceptive, frankly. Once you take out the 2892's escapement the movement loses much of what makes the 2892 special. The movement now has much of the same strengths and weaknesses as all other powermatic 80 variants.

The difference in appearance between the balance wheels was the easy way to identify the switch. The Powermatic 80 style escapements have their own pallet forks, escape wheels and all the rest, and the whole escapement would have been replaced in the switch.

That said, I'm not sure whether the synthetic escapements from the base Powermatic 80s are being used on these butchered 2892-A2 variants that Mido, Longines and the rest are using now.

Maybe I asked it wrong. As far as I can tell, watch movements belong in these categories:
Mass produced (ETA, Seiko movements, Miyota, chink shit). Which one of these is considered the best?
In house manufacture

But I can't find anything that suggests that an in house movement from anyone is better other than the finish and exclusivity. They might just be more expensive because they don't get to make their movements at scale.

Am I wrong? Are there in house movements that are superior, if we pretended we lived in a world where the quartz watch didn't exist? Basically, pretend it's a piece of machinery and think about things like accuracy, durability, isochronism, time being right even if the watch is tilted, time between servicing, features (maybe? It might screw up the answers)

It's always just a set of tradeoffs. Seiko and Miyota movements tend to be very reliable and cheap to service but also less accurate. ETAs are very reliable and more accurate but require more service. Rolex makes movements that are incredibly accurate and reliable in a tool setting but require expensive proprietary parts, tools and knowledge to service. There's really no "best" as much as it is a question of goals and priorities.

If you don't care about accuracy but you want it to run for 15 years without service, you're probably a lot better off with a Seiko than a Rolex, meanwhile if you want it to be accurate but and are okay with it's relatively high maintenance costs then a Rolex is a much better choice for you.

Some ig accounts that will give you tons of information. It's a lot to soak up, take your time. Don't take anything these guys say as the whole truth, some of them are dealers, but they have lots of knowledge. Rolex's archives are not open to the public and they do nothing to assist collectors and/or buyers in confirming or debunking myths, production numbers, anomalies in references and so on. Rolex collecting is a minefield.

Focus more on the design of the watch and the size than whether it's labelled as mens or womens. 35mm was a mens watch size for decades before the modern trend of large watches. 36mm Rolex models still look great, even on people with 7.5"+ wrists.

I'd recommend you consider looking for a 52xx King Seiko rather than the 56xx King Seiko you have pictured. The 56xx King Seiko models are all highly prone to developing a problem with the date quickset mechanism, and in any case weren't typically adjusted with as much care and attention as the 52xx and 45xx King Seiko models.

All 56xx movements have a plastic part in the date quick set mechanism that tends to shrink and crack due to age. In general movements designed and made by the Suwa Seikosha division of Seiko (typhoon logo on the dial) tend to have more long term reliability issues than those designed by Daini Seikosha (lighting bolt on the dial).

>> No.15002855

Basically, the rounded over case edges show that the case was finished quickly and cheaply by hitting it with a buffing wheel. That effect of rounding over all the edges like that is often called 'lozenging'. Also the hands are flat, stamped out of a sheet likely, and the edges haven't been cleaned up so they look rough if you see them under strong light. These are finishing shortcuts that are acceptable on a $500 watch but not on a $2000 watch.

Other watchmakers offer much better external finishing at that pricepoint, as well as movements that aren't disposable trash that will be thrown out at service because it literally isn't worth a watchmakers time to service them. Hey, you may decide you love the design enough to accept the trade offs, but better for you to have your eyes open about the strengths and weaknesses of the watch before you make a decision. If you take a look at an Oris diver, that should be a good comparison for external finishing. Oris does a pretty decent job on external finishing on their watches for the price (though I really don't like the design of their diver personally).

The 52xx King Seikos do not have the same issues as the 56xx models. The 52xx is one of the most reliable movements Seiko ever designed. It's so good that Seiko resurrected it in the 1990s as the 4Sxx and Credor still uses it today.

The 45xx King Seikos are great, but significantly more expensive to buy, are more prone to long term wear issues due to the high beat rate, and expensive to source donor parts for because there were no cheap variants of the 45xx movement.

I was about to pull the trigger but had some reservations and asked the dealer to keep it on hold. I am unable to find the dealer on the tudor website although they are on the Rolex website as authorized dealers. This would constitute my first luxury watch purchase. I don't want to make an over $3,000 mistake. My biggest concern is whether or not this is an authorized dealer even though the salesman assured me. I have concerns for maintenance and warranty down the line when I'm back stateside. I have been on a wait list for over 8 months with an authorized dealer in the United States.
