Are hollow end links that big of a deal? I got the a Kamasu a few weeks ago but didn’t know about the hollow links that the mako USA doesn’t have.

>> No.14979452

>>14979439
No. They just make the underside of the watch look cheap. Shitty hollow end links can also rattle, which can be annoying, but typically if the end links are rattling, other parts of the bracelet would also rattle as well.

Hollow end links are more of a signifying hallmark of corner-cutting shitterness, rather than a root cause. Symptom vs disease and all that.

What are the best sites to discover new and unusual watches?

All the major forums and watch blogs are suffering from a severe case of groupthink and parrotting. They keep recommending the same exact shit over and over. Everyone has the same damn watch now. Even worse usually some microbrand faggot will befriend the mods and it's over. Some shitty watch with comic sans in the dial will be shilled endlessly.

Quartz watch: driven by electric stepper motor + regulated by crystal oscillator.
Mechanical watch: driven by the mainspring + regulated by escapament mechanism.

Spring Drive: driven by the mainspring + regulated by crystal oscillator.
Spring Drive is truly a unique thing.

If the actual time keeping element relies in any way on the steady oscillations issued by a quartz crystal then the watch is effectively a quartz watch as the end product, being accurate time, is not due to purely mechanical means (gears, and balance wheel pallet fork and hairspring).
The spring drive has the added complication of an integrated circuit, further pushing it out of the mechanical watch camp and into quartz territory
.

To clarify the spring drive debate, there are 3 major areas where a watch can be either electronic or mechanical:
>power source
>regulation
>power delivery

A mecaquartz chrono for example is powered by a battery and is regulated by a quartz crystal, but the hands are moved by a gear train instead of being directly driven by a stepper motor so we see fit to make a distinction. A spring drive is more mechanical than not but either way it doesn't actually matter and it's all just pedantry. I like cool engineering, and spring drive is that

>Because "mechanical" could refer to lots of different things
Oh, so a type of watch doesn't have to be categorized and named based exclusively on the type of regulating organ it has? And "mechanical" watches aren't called "mechanical" because of their mechanical regulating organs?

If this is the case, why would there be a need for anyone to try and impose 'quartz' terminology on the spring drive then, since 'spring drive' already describes how the movement is powered just as 'electronic' does for battery powered balance wheel watches?

See, the usual argument that gets made when spring drive bait gets posted is that the "mechanical" in mechanical watch refers to the regulating organ and not the power train, and that all watches should be classified on the basis of their regulating organs alone, and under that line of argument electronic balance wheel watches are "mechanical". Yours is a novel direction for this argument.

You are incorrect.

The hands in a traditional quartz watch are also driven by a gear train - they are not each individually and directly driven by a stepper motor, because (a) a stepper motor's smallest rotation is way bigger than what you'd need to drive an hour hand, and (b) it's much more practical to have one stepper motor, rather than three.

The only thing that makes a "mechaquartz" is that the Chrono hands reset with hammers and heart cams.

They're hitting all the right marks IMO at the moment with their latest test releases and prospective new releases; everything sold out instantly.
They're limited to what they can produce because they can't afford to purchase new infrastructure in order to produce it, so it's all variations on a theme,

I honestly don't give a fuck if you want to call spring drive "quartz watches" or not, the thing that makes literally all watches that use a quartz crystal for timekeeping shit tier is the fact that they need batteries you need to change every two years (or other capacitors that die in a matter of ~3 years). All watches besides the spring drive ones that is. So really you have a good chance of owning a watch that just flat out never dies and runs for all eternity and keeps good time doing so. Spring drive has every positive of a purely mechanical watch and then happens to be accurate and failproof as any quartz watch. It's the thing nobody likes to hear because it sounds provocative and fanboyish but from any and all practical standpoints you can think of spring drive effectively makes purely mechanical watches obsolete. Naturally practicality is far from the only reason to get a watch, but if that's what you dig, if that's the excuse you need to splurge on a watch - If you were stranded on an island, that's the one and only choice of watch to take with you.

Post 2003, any electronic components that utilize non-lead solder is destined to kak it within the next 20 years or less.
You can thank EU regulations for forcing entire industries into this dumbassery.

Heres the score with lume.
I'd you want actually good lume, only get superluminova.
There's a US company out there called I think Noctiluma, but after reading some comparisons I thought it best to stick with something I knew was a sure thing.
There's only 3 grades of superluminova that anyone gives a shit about (unless you're a faggot and into that faux lume fad right now).
C1,C3 AND BGW9.
If you want day look to be a sort of creamy greeny yellow and at night a bright green glow, it's C3. If you want daytime stark white green glow it's C1, blueglow its BGW9.
Here's the catch: C1 is absofuckinglutley useless. Literally lowest on the entire superluminova chart, behind even all the meme colors like orange, yellow, red and light blue etc. Only real option for functional white lume is BGW9. Problem is C1 is cheap and Bgw9 isn't, neither is C3.

Brightest initial brightest and one with the longest glow duration is C3; it's pretty much the default for legit diving watches. But it's not that stark white it looks like you'll need. Bgw9 lasts longer than C1 but not like C3.

So if your white watch hands glow greeny then you need C1, if blue then BGW9. Or you could just redo the whole thing from scratch if you're game.
There's issues with grain size too that I cbf typing right now. Look it up, but lume brightness and duration is ultimately a function of grain size. Problem is that the grain has to be quite fine for a watch dial.

C1 if the glow is green but white when not dark.
The chart shows relative brightness only, but as for the duration of glow as it slowly decays to no glow over time the king is C3, and the then a big jump to everything else on the list.

As in, something not protected by the dial and exposed to the elements?
I've never looked into that as my watch doesn't need it, but I believe such an operation requires some special finishing touches. You don't want lume to get wet. I think that's what watch repair guy is fixing: water damage crusty lume on that TAG. I think for external shit after the lume job is done and well dry, you have to apply some kind of protective topcoat (?), I think some kind of epoxy that doesn't block UV light.
You'll have to look that shit up. I'm not planning to mess with external shit as I know I'll have enough issues with dial and hands as it is.

I think that's the case. I mean, there's nothing really in the lume mix to protect it. My kit has the powder, thinner and a binding agent. That's itxand enough to do hands and indices protected by a crystal. Nothing that would stop that shit being washed off or loosened with water or a hard knock or scratch. Behind the crystal it's fine. On a bezel you're going to be handling?
Like I said, you'll have to look that up.
Also, apparently the backing surface should be painted white for best effect. Acts like a mirror I suspect. What paint? Dunno lol have got there yet.

Looks cool, how do you like it? Is the bezel too loose?
