Just got this back from service. They didnt say specifically why it isn't running but parts are obsolete so they couldn't do anything with it. How feasible is it to get another Accutron movement put in? Would it cost more than the watch is worth? I'm guessing it'd be difficult to find the same movement in working order in the first place.

Solar-powered watches are bordering on being a scam. When you're buying a solar watch, no one tells you it has a battery that you will need to replace. "Renewable energy, it will last forever!" But in reality it's not much different from modern consumer electronics that also use rechargeable batteries that will lose their capacity and die.

CR20xx Lithium batteries is where the real power efficiency is at.

Can anyone help me id this movement ? The watch is a Catamaran my grandma found in her purse and gave me and I want to replace the movement because it doesn't work it is about 36mm the movement says no jewels unadjusted.

2 - No clue to be honest. I would carry it around if I wasn't so paranoid of losing it. Another one of granddads things. It was on the shelf behind me so I threw it in the pic.

>> No.14984212

>>14984165
Keep in mind that hands that fit one brand of moment, and within that brand say, a specific type, won't necessarily fit another's. So you're better off finding exactly that type of movement to replace it, whatever it is.
It's unlikely to be anything too exotic. If you're committed sign up for one of the standard watch forums and ask the boomers in their repair or quartz watch sections.
If you take it to a repair guy there's a fair chance you'll be charged more than the watch is worth. But you're paying him to pick the correct movement, replace it and the hands and dial without fucking anything up badly. Not fucking up the hands is harder than you think. Much harder.
Honesty you're better off just biting the bullet and getting a quote from a repair guy. Especially if the watch has sentimental value and you don't want to destroy it.

take your watch off and put it in your pocket
unironically get a pocket watch
or a nurses's watch as that looks like the sort of industry you're in
(it's like a tiny watch on a chain or a clip that's upside down and hangs from a top shirt pocket or lapel and you flip it up to see the time when needed).

pic related is a quartz powered japan railway issue pocket watch. accurate, modern and replaceable if you get infected blood on it or whatever

Anyway, I looked up how to open the back and it was the screw that goes into the ratchet wheel. It came loose somehow and the ratchet wheel came out of its place. Luckily the screw didn't fall out so I just screwed it back in and voila, it works.

>soapy water is the bane of all water resistance seals, over time

The elastomerics used today are either silicone or fluorosilicone, these are fairly resistant to attack from common household chemicals. In fact, they are better at resisting attack than your skin. If it doesn’t hurt you, it won’t hurt the gaskets. Yes, it is quite surprising that the steel case is at more risk than the rubber gaskets, but for the environment a wrist watch lives it, that's the truth.

UV will affect rubber. But, in order for UV to affect the rubber, the rubber must be exposed to UV light. How many watches do you know of with exposed gaskets? Well, the crystal gasket is exposed, isn’t it? Yes, it is, but mostly from underneath the crystal. The glass in the crystal will absorb much of the UV light, reducing the damage, and the type of gasket material commonly used is nylon, which has good resistance to UV degradation. Further, UV degradation takes time, years of time, one day at the beach will not ruin the gaskets of your crystal.

Ozone will affect rubber. That’s why rubbers have a service life. The service life is anywhere from 10 to 20 years, depending on the grade of rubber and level of ozone.

It's recommended to wind hand-wound watches in the evening, and set them in the morning. Automatic watches should be wound once a month if they don't regularly wind themselves up to max, or more often if they're just sitting on a shelf.

In principle vigorous winding can bend the crown stem, rendering a waterproof watch less so because of seals going a bit wonky. This is not a significant concern for most people, particularly 4channers with dainty lady hands.

A cloned F-91W is a third world shitter, for places where $8 is half a month's salary and you need a watch so your boss doesn't keep you in the sweatshop for 3 hours extra. Komandirskies cost like 40€ (handwound), certainly that's luxury in the sense that you could have a workable quartz shitter for that much and possibly several bottles of vodka as well. Plus there's little that's as satisfying as unfucking a fucked bit of kit on your own.

Relatedly, my Amfibia (pictured, despite Komandirski on the dial it's an Ambifia) is doing like +2.5s/d according to Watchcheck over three weeks I've had it. Seems to wind itself right up every day as well. I thought I was buying a fun cheap first-world shitter, but it turned out that shit's actually cash. Gonna need me an Adidas strap if this keeps up.

I wouldn't worry about it, just buy it for your own reasons if you want one. As popular as it is, there's bound to be some people you don't want to be associated with who also own one.
Have you tried one on, by the way? When I did, I had to take a moment to reconsider it, as the bezel is really thin IRL compared to the impression I got from pictures on the world wide. The watch itself also carried a bit smaller than I thought it would, but that is probably a good thing for most people.

It's "accurate" in the same way the clock in your phone or PC is accurate. Which means that it relies on an external source of data to stay accurate.
I know it's all a matter of preference, but I like my watch to be a self-contained device that isn't connected to anything other than my wrist.

Very nice, not sleazy, don't care for Roman numerals on dials but that's my personal taste.

To me at least, /sleaze/ is about balancing flashy, thrifty and sporty. A Rolex is too upscale, but the Timex I posted is flashy enough normies may give it a second glace or compliment it but not so much anyone would mistake it for a legit luxury watch. An almost-fitting entry-tier suit with no tie and a "been living in this suit for 48 hrs but I don't care that much" vibe, with a Timex Q is p sleazy to me.

A navy blue NATO compliments the red seconds hand and black dial IMO, I wear that combo on my black dial Ray 2. IMO the polished surfaces on the rings of most NATOs go nicely with the polished edges on the sides of the case. I think the navy blue is the more important part though.

NATO, IMO Zulu's rings look best on watches that are bulkier, more utilitarian-looking or have less "refined" lines, though I'm not sure that's the right word. Maybe I'm just a bit biased because my first analog watch I bought myself was a Bertucci A-2S and that had a Zulu on it.
