the e46 is the last true great looking bmw. it seems like they all became a bit too self indulgent in the later models. the e46 isn't pig fat, it isn't ANGERY, the lines are simple and it looks like an effortless intention of beauty.

my fave will always be the e34 because it's just old enough that it reminds of you a something but it's not too old. it retains a certain tastefulness and it has just a touch of mean that makes it looks like it hauls but it still looks controlled.

Even though I upgraded to my dream car, I still miss the e46. Shame that its 30 year old predecessor is more reliable.

I raise you the Saab 9-3 (2002)

I remember those days. First car. Thought it looked retarded. Then I got to drive one and it felt like no other automatic whip, and not in a good way. You could just slam on the gas and it would hiss for a second before engaging and speeding up. Used to drive around with GF on snowy days and car would just slide around. a lot of sliding around. More of a horse than a car - it did its own thing when you weren't nice to it but when you were, it was always loyal. It never really chimped out until it did. And then when it did, it was done. Like a horse.

Those were the days. Gas was cheaper, no one was on fuckin chinese "tik tok" and "iStore" all day. The Iraq War was just heating up, like a boss. Maybe we would have won that war if we rolled into Ramadi in Saabs blasting Souja Boy and Ludacris. Thor's hammer itself forged the Saab's chassis in the dead of winter so it could loose violent plauges of lead in the sordid heat of lesser armies. That was Bush's biggest bungle.

Yeah man. Saabs were bitchin. Used to go to Taco Bell in that bitch and get my ass a chalupa for days. Used to drive it to the gym. I was raised in a neurotic normie anglo but the Saab gave me a Nordic Vitality that did not soon dissipate, and which lent great force and a certain THYMOS to my sheltered suburban peregrinations. No one ever glances with desire towards a Saab until they drive one.

I like to look out over the PNW expressways as I fly home and think of where she is now. I like to think the lad who bought her towed her to the peaks of Mt. Rainer and pushed her down as a sacrifice to THOR - the only one who cares to breathe life back into the hearts of such an antiquated and overlooked beast. So that another could take the reins and ride again through the ice on a steed who teaches such respect for what ice does.

And sometimes, when I hear the inimitable whinnying of a Saab on these expressways I know this vision must be true.
